Skåne is a beautiful county with a varied landscape. Coast in three directions. Undulating fields of canola seed. Deep forests. Steep cliffs. Expansive plains. Coastal meadows rich in -life. Skåne is also home to animal and plant species that are found nowhere else in . The county harbours the greatest variety of species, but also the largest number of endangered species of any in Sweden. This is why it is important to protect Skåne’s . Skåne is the most densely-populated county after Stockholm, and the population is increasing. The result is significant pressure to commercially exploit certain parts of the county. This is another reason why it is critical that we safeguard Skåne’s unique natural resources. Aside from protecting biodiversity, it is also important to preserve the beautiful natural environment for future generations. The natural environment contributes to our quality of life, and it is thanks to nature reserves that beautiful natural environments can be preserved for future generations. Skåne is home to a large number of nature reserves – over 250 in fact. Steep cliffs and captivating scenery can be found along coast at Bjärekusten in the north-west. Flommen in the south-west is one of the country’s most important resting places for migratory . Dunderbäcken in the north-east offers lush broad-leaved woodlands as a for many different species. Many uncommon butterflies, beetles and other insects thrive in Vitemölla in the south-east thanks to the patches of exposed sand and area-specific plants. These are just four examples of the protected natural areas in Skåne that we think are particularly worth a visit. They all offer something unique. The idea is for this book to be a meaningful guide to the nature of Skåne.

Why Do We Have Nature Reserves? Today, the need to protect valuable natural areas and species for the future is greater than it has ever been in the history of mankind. The current intensive use of the soil and the forest means that animals and plants find it harder and harder to thrive in Skåne’s countryside. Increased population growth leads to a fight between different interests over the available land and, in the long-term, there is a risk that large portions of Skåne’s natural areas will disappear. A large number of species are threa- tened with extinction in Sweden since their habitats have disappeared. Society has several ways of preserving environ- ments that are worthy of protection for the future, the most common of which is the

The nature reserve Axeltorps Skogar is on the north-west slope of Hallandsåsen (a high horst ridge that interrupts the flat landscape), only two kilometres from Båstad. A footpath starting in Båstad takes you through a landscape that carries memories of the agriculture that has taken place here since the Bronze Age. Water rushes down the steep slope towards the Sinarp valley through undisturbed woodlands and steep ravines.

At its deepest point, the bog is over 25 metres deep, and at the bottom lies the glacial lake that was created when the inland ice sheet receded. Carrs and bogs are wetlands that have become overgrown. Decomposition happens very slowly in the waterlogged ground, primarily due to a lack of oxygen. A thick layer of dead plant material that has not been broken down slowly builds up into a thick layer of peat. In the end the bog becomes so high that it lies over the surroun- ding land. The bog then becomes increasingly lacking in nutrients and the special plants that thrive on the wet, meagre soil start to become dominant; Sphagnum Moss, Cross-Leaved Heath, Hare’s-Tail Cottongrass and Sundew. The bog is surrounded by a carr which drains the water from the bog’s domed surface.

This is a rare butterfly that is only found in two places in March Gentian Skåne and that has a very special life cycle. It lays its eggs on only one variety of host plant, the Marsh Gentian. When the eggs hatch the larvae tumble to the ground and wait to be taken care of by ants. The larvae then live for a year inside the ants’ nest, being fed by the worker ants until it is time for the larvae to pupate and develop their wings as a beautiful blue-shimmering butterfly. Plant, butterfly and ants must thus live together in the same place in order for the Alcon Blue to survive.

Water has continued to shape the valley by creating the serpentine, meandering river that runs through the ravine. Those who made use of that which the ground and the woodlands offered were Jacks of all trades. The forest is filled with the remains of the old farming landscape, with tar pits, charcoal burning sites and small allotments interspersed among the trees. Grävlingabackarna Grävlingabackarna is an example of the meagre land in Kullaskogen. It used to be a sparse forest of Scots pine and broad-leaved trees, but Norway spruce began encroaching from the north and beech from the south as early as the 17th century. At the beginning of the 2000s, the spruce forest was afflicted by the European spruce bark beetle, resulting in the death of most of the spruce. Now the forest is a smorgas- bord for woodpeckers and other organisms. The idea in Grävlingabackarna is to allow the forest to develop freely. The identity of the tree that is going to win – beech or spruce – will only be known in one hundred years. However, this is not a nature reserve that is suitable for visitors, there are many dead trees that can fall down on them. It is better to visit Sporrakulla or Dalshult. .

The Battle of Borst In the 17th century, Borstbäcken was the site of a bloody battle. At a fording point over the stream, Swedish soldiers on horseback took on the Danish Army. The Swedes had been travelling round, plundering the manors around Övedskloster and Hjularöd to get food for the Swedish Army. The Danish Army had conscripted boys and men from Skåne to defend it against the Swedes, and the two sides met by the cold water of Borstbäcken. Many of the 500 men and boys from Skåne and 300 Swedish horsemen were killed and wounded on that March day in 1644. When the battle was over, the Swedes had won.

Drakamöllan and the adjoining reserve Kumlan is a fabulous landscape with expansive grass heaths, unique sandy grassland habitats and groves of lush beech woodlands. An archaic system of cultivation, involving long periods of fallowness, has created a unique natural environment with a very special flora in this place. Sweet-scented St. Bernard’s Lily bloom on the hillsides, and in late summer the heath is radiant with purple heather flowers.

Archaic Agriculture Created Life in the Hills The gently rolling sandy hills were created when the inland ice sheet melted away. People learned early on how to utilise the easily- worked soil for cultivation. And when the trees were cut down in order to keep the alum works in alive, the area became even more open. But the soil is not sufficiently rich in nutrients to permit gowning each year. Instead, shifting cultivation was introduced, which involved allowing the area to lie fallow after a couple of years of rye and buckwheat cultiva- tion. Sometimes these fallow periods would last up to 10–20 years, during which the area was used as pasture. The result was an environment rich in species, where plants, fungi and animals that thrive in the mosaic of open exposed areas of sand and flowering vegetation have been given the space to live. Nectar-filled blossoms attract butterflies, among them the rare large blue. A section of the heath is burned each year to prevent the heather growing too high and taking over the open grass heaths.

Sand and Warmth Give Life The sandy ground has its own specific species; St. Bernard’s lily, sand lizards and mining bees are those that thrive in Drakamöllan and

Birds of the Rapids Both Grey Wagtail and White-throated Dipper breed by the river, and your chances of seeing them is best by the mills and in those parts of the river where there are rapids. The water in the river is clean and has a rich fauna with several rare Caddisflies.

Varied Grazing Landscape The great variety in the hills, with pasture, stone walls, bushes and groves of trees, provides a habitat for many animals and plants. This has been a stronghold of the Hazel Dormouse and even today you can find the nest that this little Kingfisher mouse has built in the densest brush.
