This is a rarely collected species from rainforest in mountain regions of north eastern New South Wales, bringing to nine the number of species of Doodia in Australia . Introduction The genus Doodia (Blechnaceae) is estimated to contain more than 30 species distributed through Australasia, Papuasia, Malesia, Sri Lanka and the Pacific region extending north east to Hawaii and as far east as Easter Island (Parris 1972, 1998). Hybrids have been reported among some of the species especially in the D. caudata complex (Andrews 1990). Eight species have been defined by Parris (1998) in the Flora of Australia treatment. Our leader was Ian Hutton who gave us his generous and unstinting help, and the benefit of his enormous knowledge of the flora and fauna of Lord Howe Island. Anyone interested in Lord Howe Island must have a copy of Ian‘s book, ”Lord Howe Island” in which he discusses the natural history flora and fauna of the Island. He also describes most trees, shrubs and Climbers with a key. There is also a fern list. The new edition to appear shortly will describe all discovered ferns as well as other expanded Chapters. His ”Birds of Lord Howe Island Past’and Present" is also a must. Both books are obtainable from him c/o P.O. Box 6367. Coffs Harbour Plaza. New, 2450. Ne sighted and identified specimens of all except two of the 180 native trees, shrubs and climbers, including 57 endemic species. Some of us were especially interested in the ferns. Of the 56 species we found 51 of which 26 were endemic.

(2008). This is nearly one third of the total c. 1100 species of indigenous Pteridophytes present in India. Endemics in the list are noted and carefully revised distributions are given for each species along with their estimated IUCN category. A slightly modified update of the classification by Fraser-Jenkins (2010a) is used. MU 2 MOUNTAIN GULLY GREY MYRTLE DRY RAINFOREST CORRESPONDING CLASSIFICATIONS Regional: RF38 Grey Myrtle Dry Rainforest State: Dry Rainforest Number of Sites: 7 Average number of identified native species per plot: 31 DESCRIPTION Grey Myrtle Dry Rainforest occurs in the Capertee Valley in narrow isolated patches. It is closely associated with drainage lines and sheltered slopes of the prominent escarpments of the Valley. While mostly tied to the Permian Sediments small patches are also found amongst Limestone outcropping. The community is a dry rainforest assemblage occurring in areas with mean annual rainfall generally less than 850 millimetres per annum. Backhousia myrtifolia forms a dense canopy varying from stunted thickets to small trees in more protected locations. Ficus rubiginosa or Photograph by Bec Allport Rapanea howittiana may dominate at individual sites or share the canopy. Emergent eucalypts may also feature above the rainforest canopy including Eucalyptus tereticornis, E. punctata and E. cypellocarpa. Melaleuca styphelioides is occasionally found along drainage lines or amongst protected soaks. The shrub layer is variable and may include the spiky shrubs Bursaria spinosa and Hymenanthera dentata. An array of ferns and vines provide a sparse cover across a dry to damp soil. Asplenium flabellifolium, Adiantum aethiopicum, Pellaea spp., Pandorea pandorana subsp. pandorana and Aphanopetalum resinosum are typical. Also found are herbs including Plectranthus parvifolius, Dichondra repens and the small epiphyte Pyrrosia rupestris. At particularly dry sites, vines and ferns are virtually absent from the community leaving an open exposed dry soil or rock cover. Grey Myrtle Dry Rainforest is widespread throughout the Sydney Basin Bioregion in dry gorges throughout the southern Blue Mountains and dry gullies Northern Wollemi National aprk.

Chapter 2: Screening for heavy metal tolerant fern species 2 Screening for heavy metal tolerance in common Australian fern species * ABSTRACT The effects of cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) on the growth and uptake of 10 fern species was investigated under a controlled environment in order to evaluate their suitability for phytoremediation. Fern species included Adiantum aethiopicum, Blechnum cartilagineum, Blechnum nudum, Calochlaena dubia, Dennstaedtia davallioides, Doodia aspera, Hypolepis muelleri, Nephrolepis cordifolia, Pellaea falcata and the arsenic (As) hyperaccumulating Pteris vittata . Ferns were exposed to four levels of heavy metals at concentrations of 0, 50, 100 and 500 mg kg –1 for a period of 20 weeks. In general, heavy metal translocation was limited, with the majority of heavy metals held in roots, suggesting an exclusion mechanism as part of the ferns’ tolerance to the applied heavy metals. Similar heavy metal-accumulation patterns were observed for all species in that accumulation generally increased with increasing levels of heavy metals applied. In most cases a sharp increase was observed between 100 and 500 mg kg –1 treatment levels, suggesting a breakdown in tolerance mechanisms and unrestricted heavy metals transport. This was corroborated by enhanced visual toxicity symptoms and a reduction in survival rates of ferns when exposed to 500 mg kg –1 treatment levels; and to a lesser extent 100 mg kg–1 treatment levels. Nephrolepis cordifolia and H. muelleri were identified as possible candidates in phytostabilisation of Cu-, Pb-, Ni- or Zn-contaminated soils; similarly D. davallioides appeared favourable for use in phytostabilisation of Cu- and Zn- contaminated soils.

Australian Native Ferns Adiantum aethiopicum L., (1759) , ADIANTACEAE Maiden hair Rhizome creeping, to 3 mm diameter, stoloniferous; stolons wiry, ca. 1.5 mm diameter; scales thin, yellow, transparent, broadly triangular, entire, often spirally curled. Fronds densely tufted, or sometimes scattered along stolons, to 75 cm long. Stipe to 40 cm long, glossy, glabrous, red-brown, bearing conspicuous basal scales similar to those of the rhizome. Lamina 3-pinnate, Distribution ovate to triangular, 12–40 cm long, 5–23 cm wide. Pinnae narrowly triangular. The same could be said of our Docents at the Garden, for the task which they are trying to achieve, by the power of the spoken word, is before all, to make you see. "When you lead a tour in the Garden, you have to make the science come alive! " So say our active docents [the persons who lead tours], and you dont have to know much about pedagogy to know that something exciting is happening as that enthusiasm begins to spread throughout the tour group. It is a real treat to watch a docent, when well-matched to a group, lead a tour, for inevitably five minutes or so into the tour her (his) face lights up, and the collective energy level increases palpably! By the end of the tour, not only have the group members learned something about plants, botany and our Garden, they have also thoroughly enjoyed their visit (and have associated that joy with the Garden). The docent has only an hour (often less) in which to bring about this stunning transformation; when it happens, it is nothing less than magical! There is both an art and a science involved in inter- pretive education.
