Dear Hembers, I hope members everywhere enjoyed the holiday season which passed so quickly and I didn't write all the letters I had planned. 1 apologise to those whose letters I have not answered. Our membership has increased to about 300. 1 hope you all enjoy the newsletters and if possible come along to some of our meetings and meet other members. 1 want to thank all the members who completed and returned the information sheets. The information has been-collated and should provide some interesting segments for the book which Bill Payne advises is coming on very nicely. The shade area extension at the burrendong Arboretum has not been completed so the April trip has been cancelled. As sodn as the canopy is completed we will go out there 'in force' to do the plantings- One of our Sydney members, who had never seen the shade area at Burrendong Arboretum, until January of this year, ran; to say how overwhelmed he wag at the planning, hard work and effort that has been put into the area. On 23rd February about 25 members visited the Joseph Banks Native Plants Garden at Kareela, a Sydney suburb. Peter Ulde took the group on a conducted tour. We were invited to select an area where ferns could be planted and believe me it is a glorious setting so-the group decided to purchase ferns for planting in two areas. -

BUDAWANGIA* AN E-NEWSLETTER FOR ALL THOSE INTERESTED IN THE NATIVE PLANTS OF THE NSW SOUTH COAST Contact: Dr Kevin Mills – [email protected] No. 37 – April 2015 Aims: To connect those interested in the native flora of the NSW South Coast, to share up to date information on the flora of the region and to broaden the appreciation of the region’s native plants. Editorial This month turned out to be very wet, with about 2.5 to 3 months of average rainforest received at Jamberoo over a few days late in the month. Some of you may have noticed the abundant white fruit on the forest floor lately; this is the Crab Apple Schizomeria ovata (Cunoniaceae), which is fruiting particularly well this year. If you live near a White Cedar Melia azedarach tree, you may have seen the hairy White Cedar Moth caterpillars, which are again on the march (see Newsletter No. 25, April 2014). Rainforest trees often confuse people, so many similar looking leaves to study! The only recommendation I can give is that repetition is the only way to become familiar enough to identify a plant quickly and consistently each time. Unfortunately, some species exhibit a great variation in leaf shape and size. A few of the trees with serrated leaves are included here to aid their identification. Further to last month’s piece on Araucaria, Allan (temporary Barcelona correspondent and Araucaria enthusiast) notes that there are two species of Araucaria in South America. The Paraná Pine Araucaria angustifolia occurs in Brazil. Plant of the month is the Beach Bean, a rare coastal plant in our region. -

This is a rarely collected species from rainforest in mountain regions of north eastern New South Wales, bringing to nine the number of species of Doodia in Australia . Introduction The genus Doodia (Blechnaceae) is estimated to contain more than 30 species distributed through Australasia, Papuasia, Malesia, Sri Lanka and the Pacific region extending north east to Hawaii and as far east as Easter Island (Parris 1972, 1998). Hybrids have been reported among some of the species especially in the D. caudata complex (Andrews 1990). Eight species have been defined by Parris (1998) in the Flora of Australia treatment. Ne were Geoff ahd Ann Long, Qllan and Moreen Noollett, Roy and Beatrice Duncan and Calder and Keith Chaffey. Our leader was Ian Hutton who gave us his generous and unstinting help, and the benefit of his enormous knowledge of the flora and fauna of Lord Howe Island. Anyone interested in Lord Howe Island must have a copy of Ian‘s book, ”Lord Howe Island” in which he discusses the natural history flora and fauna of the Island. He also describes most trees, shrubs and Climbers with a key. There is also a fern list. The new edition to appear shortly will describe all discovered ferns as well as other expanded Chapters. His ”Birds of Lord Howe Island Past’and Present" is also a must. Both books are obtainable from him c/o P.O. Box 6367. Coffs Harbour Plaza. New, 2450. Ne sighted and identified specimens of all except two of the 180 native trees, shrubs and climbers, including 57 endemic species. Some of us were especially interested in the ferns. Of the 56 species we found 51 of which 26 were endemic. -

(2008). This is nearly one third of the total c. 1100 species of indigenous Pteridophytes present in India. Endemics in the list are noted and carefully revised distributions are given for each species along with their estimated IUCN category. A slightly modified update of the classification by Fraser-Jenkins (2010a) is used. Dating back to the Carboniferous period, some 350 million years ago, ferns are one of the oldest plant forms. On the Central Coast there are many beautiful ferns indigenous to this area. Why not try some of these ferns: in your garden, indoors, in a hanging basket, in or near a water feature. What is a fern? Ferns belong to a group of non-flowering plants that include algae, mosses and liverworts. From large tree ferns such as Cyathea, to the tiny delicate Maidenhair Fern, Adiantum, ferns have one thing in common. They all produce spores. What growing conditions do ferns like? Most ferns prefer a cool, moist position in light dappled shade, protected from strong winds. Generally ferns like a soil containing plenty of organic matter. Heavy mulching around the root area will keep the roots cool and prevent water loss. A free draining mix should be used for plants grown in pots or baskets. Ferns grown indoors should be kept away from direct sunlight, draughts and heaters. Do ferns have any pests or diseases? Generally ferns are not troubled by many pests or diseases. However, slugs and snails can sometimes be a problem, as can scale, insect pests and mealy bug. If your plants suffer from any of these problems, consult your local nursery, as treatment of these pests is constantly being improved and updated. Where do ferns grow? Ferns can be found growing as: epiphytes sometimes attached to a tree high up in the canopy. -

MU 2 MOUNTAIN GULLY GREY MYRTLE DRY RAINFOREST CORRESPONDING CLASSIFICATIONS Regional: RF38 Grey Myrtle Dry Rainforest State: Dry Rainforest Number of Sites: 7 Average number of identified native species per plot: 31 DESCRIPTION Grey Myrtle Dry Rainforest occurs in the Capertee Valley in narrow isolated patches. It is closely associated with drainage lines and sheltered slopes of the prominent escarpments of the Valley. While mostly tied to the Permian Sediments small patches are also found amongst Limestone outcropping. The community is a dry rainforest assemblage occurring in areas with mean annual rainfall generally less than 850 millimetres per annum. Backhousia myrtifolia forms a dense canopy varying from stunted thickets to small trees in more protected locations. Ficus rubiginosa or Photograph by Bec Allport Rapanea howittiana may dominate at individual sites or share the canopy. Emergent eucalypts may also feature above the rainforest canopy including Eucalyptus tereticornis, E. punctata and E. cypellocarpa. Melaleuca styphelioides is occasionally found along drainage lines or amongst protected soaks. The shrub layer is variable and may include the spiky shrubs Bursaria spinosa and Hymenanthera dentata. An array of ferns and vines provide a sparse cover across a dry to damp soil. Asplenium flabellifolium, Adiantum aethiopicum, Pellaea spp., Pandorea pandorana subsp. pandorana and Aphanopetalum resinosum are typical. Also found are herbs including Plectranthus parvifolius, Dichondra repens and the small epiphyte Pyrrosia rupestris. At particularly dry sites, vines and ferns are virtually absent from the community leaving an open exposed dry soil or rock cover. Grey Myrtle Dry Rainforest is widespread throughout the Sydney Basin Bioregion in dry gorges throughout the southern Blue Mountains and dry gullies Northern Wollemi National aprk. -

Common in eastern Australia. In New Zealand primarily a species of northern offshore islands but also known from a few locations in Northland, Auckland and Coromandel. HABITAT Coastal in short scrub, on cliff faces and in open forest. Often on small islands, also inland on scoria and basalt rocks around Auckland City. FEATURES Shortly rhizomatous, tufted fern. Stipes 70-250 mm, stipes and rachises erect, dark brown, densely clad in spreading scales. Frond linear, pinnate, 200-500 x 30-70 mm. Pinnae, shortly stalked, oblong-falcate to distinctly falcate, 15-40 x 7-15 mm, evenly spaced, margins smooth, glossy green above, paler below. Sori in two marginal bands reaching toward but not meeting at pinna apices. SIMILAR TAXA Differs from P. calidirupium by a more northerly habit, has larger, distinctly falcate pinnules, smaller less offset terminal pinna, spreading stipe and frond scales, and by the sori which are not continuous along the margin of the pinna. Thylacopteris is the sister to a diverse clade of polygrammoid ferns that occurs mainly in Southeast Asia and Malesia. The phylogenetic relationships are inferred from DNA sequences of three chloroplast genome regions (rbcL, rps4, rps4-trnS IGS) for 62 taxa and a fourth cpDNA sequence (trnL-trnF IGS) for 35 taxa. The results refute previously proposed close relationships to Polypodium s.s. but support suggested relationships to the Southeast Asiatic genus Goniophlebium. In all phylogenetic reconstructions based on more than one cpDNA region, we recovered Thylacopteris as sister to a clade in which Goniophlebium is in turn sister to several lineages, including the genera Lecanopteris, Lepisorus, Microsorum, and their relatives.
