Storage of large synaptic connectivity (SNN topology) information in SNNs require large distributed on-chip mem- ory, which poses serious challenges for compact hardware implementation of such archi- tectures. Based on the structured neural organisation observed in human brain, a modular neural networks (MNN) design strategy partitions complex application tasks into smaller subtasks executing on distinct neural network modules, and integrates intermediate outputs in higher level functions. This paper proposes a hardware modular neural tile (MNT) archi- tecture that reduces the SNN topology memory requirement of NoC-based hardware SNNs by using a combination of fixed and configurable synaptic connections. The proposed MNT contains a 16:16 fully-connected feed-forward SNN structure and integrates in a mesh topol- ogy NoC communication infrastructure. The SNN topology memory requirement is 50% of the monolithic NoC-based hardware SNN implementation. The paper also presents a lookup table based SNN topology memory allocation technique, which further increases the memory utilisation efficiency. Overall the area requirement of the architecture is reduced by an aver- age of 66% for practical SNN application topologies. The paper presents micro-architecture details of the proposed MNT and digital neuron circuit.

Woods Peterhouse This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Division of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Cambridge 2013 1 This dissertation is the result of my own work and includes nothing which is the outcome of work done in collaboration except where specifically indicated in the text. The following does not exceed the word limit (80,000 words) set out by the Division of Archaeology and Anthropology degree committee. 2 Abstract Economy and Authority: A study of the coinage of Hiberno-Scandinavian Dublin and Ireland Andrew R. Woods The aim of this thesis is to investigate the relationship between political authority and economic change in the tenth to twelfth centuries AD. This is often interpreted as a period of dramatic economic and political upheaval; enormous growth in commerce, the emergence of an urban network and increasingly centralised polities are all indicative of this process. Ireland has rarely been considered in discussion of this sort but analysis of Ireland’s political economy has much to contribute to the debate. This will be tackled through a consideration of the coinage struck in Ireland between c.995 and 1170 with focus upon the two themes of production and usage. In analysing this material the scale and scope of a monetary economy, the importance of commerce and the controlling aspects of royal authority will each be addressed. The approach deployed is also overtly comparative with material from other contemporary areas, particularly England and Norway, used to provide context.

Dh’ aithnich iad annad-sa an fhéile Nach do reub an cuan, Nach do mhill mìle bliadhna: Buaidh a’ Ghàidheil buan. [You were to the Gaels of Ireland as one of themselves and their people. They knew in you the humanity that the sea did not tear, that a thousand years did not spoil: the quality of the Gael permanent.]1 The words of Sorley MacLean have become something of a Q-Celtic clarion call in recent years. They commemorate his brother Calum, whose work on each side of the North Channel on behalf of the Irish Folklore Commission and of the School of Scottish Studies, recording the oral tradition of those whom Calum, quoting the Irish poet F. R. Higgins, described as ‘the lowly, the humble, the passionate and knowledgeable stock of the Gael’,2 is as potent a symbol as there could be of the continuing reality of a greater Gaeldom, however attenuated, into our own times.

Harris-Logan October 2007 1 Abstract This investigation will interrogate the mimetic faculty of modern Gaelic oral culture, focussing particularly on mimesis as an artistic device. The imitation of nature in Gaelic is perhaps most frequently associated with the folksong tradition, in which non-lexical vocable refrains are frequently deployed for the purposes of emulating a particular sound quality pertinent to an individual species or natural phenomenon, such as the call of the seal or the breaking of waves.
