Headmaster’s Welcome Good Evening On behalf of the Board of Governors and the entire Abbey community I would like to welcome you all to this evening’s Prize Giving Ceremony. Tonight is an important occasion when we honour the achievements of our students over the last academic year I would like to begin with a special word of congratulations to the students we honour tonight by awarding GCSE certificates and also students in the categories of Best in subject at GCSE and Top GCSE Grades. I also applaud the students whose other achievements have enriched the previous academic year. I have great pleasure in welcoming back to his Alma Mater our distinguished guest speaker Mr Fearghal O’Connor. Fearghal was a pupil in the Abbey between 1980 and 1987 and completed A Levels in History, French and Economics. He also gave great service to the school through his contribution to the school golf team. He has since gone on to lead a hugely successful and interesting career in the field of Law. We are honoured that he has accepted our invitation to return to the Abbey tonight. At the same time as congratulating our pupils, I would like to pay particular tribute to you the parents for the work that you have done over the years and in particular for the enthusiastic and continued support that you offer the school. Lastly, on behalf of myself and the Board of Governors I would like to express our appreciation for the work of our dedicated staff who work so enthusiastically with your sons to enhance all aspects of their education. In conclusion, I hope that you all enjoy the presentations tonight and I invite you to join us for light refreshments in the school canteen at the end of the evening. Mr Dermot McGovern Headmaster The Abbey 1 Guest Speaker: Fearghal O’Connor Fearghal O'Connor was born in Newry and received his early education at the Abbey Primary School, Newry and the Abbey Grammar School on Courtenay Hill, the latter between 1980 and 1987. He sat GCE 'O' Levels in 1985 and then went on to study History, French and Economics at 'A' Level in the summer of 1987, before being accepted to study Law at Queen's University, Belfast between 1987 and 1991. Fearghal graduated with LLB Hons in 1991 and after a gap year undertook his professional exams at the Institute of Professional Legal Studies, Belfast, which at that time was under the Directorship of the current President of Ireland Professor Mary McAleese. He qualified as a Solicitor in October 1994. Fearghal's early apprenticeship was with Gerard Trainor of The Elliott-Trainor Partnership, Newry, and he spent three further years in Newry with this firm before moving to Terence McCourt, Solicitor, whose practice is based in Lisburn and who is also a former pupil of the Abbey. From here he moved to a post within the public sector in Belfast in 2002, as a Solicitor within the Directorate of Legal Services, Central Services Agency in the areas of Defence litigation and Employment Tribunals on behalf of a number of Client Trusts within the Health Service. He returned to work in Newry in 2005 where he currently practises in the family firm with his wife Elizabeth O'Connor based at 8 Sandy's St., Newry. The firm has a particular interest in Employment Law as well as dealing with all of the day-to-day needs of clients in the areas of Conveyancing, Civil Litigation, Matrimonial, Probate, and Criminal work. During his Abbey days, Fearghal represented the school in his chosen sport of golf on many occasions under the mentorship of the much respected Mr Pat Mooney. Having by his own admission peaked at a young age, and realising that the opportunity of a Ryder Cup place had probably passed, he has in recent years turned his attention to mountain-biking and running, with the promise to return to golf in later years. Fearghal lives in Rostrevor and is married with two children aged 8 and 10. 2 The Abbey G.C.S.E Certificates 2010 Surname Forename School Surname Forename School Austin Conor St.Dallan's P.S. ENEAS MACKAY, STIRLING 1911 PRINTKD AT THE " NORTHERN OHRONIOLB " OFFICE, INYBRNESS PREFACE The following Etymology of the Principal Gaelic ISTational Names, Personal Names, and Surnames was originally, and still is, part of the Gaelic EtymologicaJ Dictionary by the late Dr MacBain. The Disquisition on Ptolemy's Geography of Scotland first appeared in the Transactions of the Gaelic Society of Inverness, and, later, as a pamphlet. The Publisher feels sure that the issue of these Treatises in their present foim will confer a boon on those who cannot have access to them as originally published. They contain a great deal of information on subjects which have for long years interested Gaelic students and the Gaelic public, although they have not always properly understood them. Indeed, hereto- fore they have been much obscured by fanciful fallacies, which Dr MacBain's study and exposition will go a long way to dispel. • Modular Neural Tile Architecture for Compact Embedded Hardware Spiking Neural Network
Neural Process Lett DOI 10.1007/s11063-012-9274-5 Modular Neural Tile Architecture for Compact Embedded Hardware Spiking Neural Network Sandeep Pande · Fearghal Morgan · Seamus Cawley · Tom Bruintjes · Gerard Smit · Brian McGinley · Snaider Carrillo · Jim Harkin · Liam McDaid © Springer Science+Business Media New York 2012 Abstract Biologically-inspired packet switched network on chip (NoC) based hardware spiking neural network (SNN) architectures have been proposed as an embedded comput- ing platform for classification, estimation and control applications. Storage of large synaptic connectivity (SNN topology) information in SNNs require large distributed on-chip mem- ory, which poses serious challenges for compact hardware implementation of such archi- tectures. Based on the structured neural organisation observed in human brain, a modular neural networks (MNN) design strategy partitions complex application tasks into smaller subtasks executing on distinct neural network modules, and integrates intermediate outputs in higher level functions. This paper proposes a hardware modular neural tile (MNT) archi- tecture that reduces the SNN topology memory requirement of NoC-based hardware SNNs by using a combination of fixed and configurable synaptic connections. The proposed MNT contains a 16:16 fully-connected feed-forward SNN structure and integrates in a mesh topol- ogy NoC communication infrastructure. The SNN topology memory requirement is 50% of the monolithic NoC-based hardware SNN implementation. The paper also presents a lookup table based SNN topology memory allocation technique, which further increases the memory utilisation efficiency. Overall the area requirement of the architecture is reduced by an aver- age of 66% for practical SNN application topologies. The paper presents micro-architecture details of the proposed MNT and digital neuron circuit.

Signed: (\- . Anne Marie Herron ID No.: 58262954 Date: 4th October 2011 Thesis Abstract This thesis examines the extent to which Eilis Dillon's (1920-94) reliance on memory and her propensity to represent the past was, for her, a valuable motivating power and/or an inherited repressive influence in terms of her choices of genres, subject matter and style. Volume I of this dissertation consists of a comprehensive survey and critical analysis of Dillon's writing. It addresses the thesis question over six chapters, each of which relates to a specific aspect of the writer's background and work. In doing so, the study includes the full range of genres that Dillon employed - stories and novels in both Irish and English for children of various age-groups, teenage adventure stories, as well as crime fiction, literary and historical novels, short stories, poetry, autobiography and works of translation for an adult readership. The dissertation draws extensively on largely untapped archival material, including lecture notes, draft documents and critical reviews of Dillon's work.
