Ceelo Green (left) and Adam Levine of The Voice. NBC climbs out of ratings basement he broadcast television season comes to an end on TWednesday, but experts are already predicting the winners: Fox, once again, among the advertiser- friendly category of 18- to 49-year- olds, and CBS—again—among total viewers. ¶ But there is one surprise. NBC has broken its seven-year bloomberg newsbloomberg losing streak. Among the 18-to-49 crowd, the Peacock Network climbed out of the ratings basement, its 2.5 rating edging out ABC’s 2.4 for the No. 3 spot, according to Nielsen. ¶ “NBC did it on just two properties: the NFL, including the Super Bowl, and The Voice,” said Brad Adgate, head of research at Horizon Media. ¶ That’s some comfort for ABC, which has the edge over its rival in scripted shows and which is hoping it can pull ahead once all the DVR viewing is counted. “Without sports, NBC had a 2.0 rating,” noted an ABC insider. ¶ NBC, meanwhile, points out that Sunday Night Football was No. 1 in the 18-49 demographic, that The Voice is neck and neck with American Idol, and that Smash tripled the ratings for its time slot over a year ago. ¶ Still, NBC has plenty of programming holes to fill if it wants to maintain momentum. “Day to day, ABC’s lineup is stronger,” Mr. Adgate said. “I would expect ABC to surpass NBC” next season. —matthew flamm

need for closure would be substan- tially reduced. This process is not easy. It won’t soon replace the need for some clo- sures. Some schools have failed for so long and have a culture so toxic and entrenched that the lift is too great and a foundation can’t be es- tablished to support comprehensive change. Our model takes three and a half years to be truly effective. Initially, we had early success improving school culture, but student achieve- ment still lagged. We’ve had to re- fine and rethink our approach to make sure that as culture, behavior and teacher practices improve, so does learning. There is an enormous amount of work being done to turn around struggling schools. It’s time to stop wasting resources and time debat- ing that some schools need to close. Instead, let’s learn from past mis- takes and invest in practices that work, and replace failed schools with ones prepared from the start to help all children reach their potential.
