SYNOPSIS Considered the greatest exponent of the particular way of making musical films of Carlos Saura, Flamenco, flamenco arises, through a journey of light and life, the evolution of the songs, dances and music of this art that, in the director own words, would be heritage of the universe. With the experience and knowledge that Carlos Saura’s films have gained over time, we enter in the roads of the existing talents of this art so alive and dynamic that flamenco is it, to present his new film which uses innovative elements, in the technical field as in the narrative, becoming a unique production. The film shows that there is a powerful new flamenco, of young talents finding their way in our country and beyond our borders, but the reality of this art can not be reflected in the right way without some of the great living masters that we are fortunate to have in Spain. 02. DIRECTOR’S NOTES Carlos Saura It is always difficult to write about the ideas that lead me to create my musical films. It is difficult because the actual scripts I use are barely three or four pages long, where the different dances that have been chosen are in order, with the artist’s name and the space in which the dance might develop. It is even more difficult because part of the stimulus, the fun that always comes with the filming is based – let's face it – on the possibility of improvising in this type of cinema.

More recently they have turned their attention to the earliest and most brutal years of that legacy. In the anniversary year 2009, in Madrid the Conde Duque Arts Centre presented ‘Presas’, a major exhibition documenting Francoist women prisoners and drawing on the rich archives of the Communist Party; and the Reina Sofía National Museum re-hung its collection, exhibiting new photographic and documentary material to place in context a revised display of Picasso’s Guernica.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PANORAMA EUROPE FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS FOR ITS TENTH YEAR WITH A SELECTION OF SIXTEEN FEATURE FILMS AND ONE SHORTS PROGRAM May 4–31, 2018 at Museum of the Moving Image and Bohemian National Hall Festival opens on Friday, May 4 with the experimental art-world documentary thriller The End of Fear Closing night program on Thursday, May 31 is a new restoration of the Czech classic Case for the New Hangman New York, NY, April 12, 2018—Panorama Europe 2018, the tenth edition of the essential festival of new and vital European cinema, co-presented by Museum of the Moving Image and the members of EUNIC (European Union National Institutes for Culture), includes fiction and documentary works that present a portrait of contemporary Europe during a period of tremendous flux. The festival, which launched in 2009 by Czech Center New York, continues to give New Yorkers an eclectic overview of the current European film scene. Highlighting recent films from throughout the continent, several of the films explore dialogues between the historic upheavals of the twentieth century and the current moment. The programmer of this year’s edition of the festival, Nellie Killian, says, “Bringing a more unified curatorial voice to the Panorama Europe line up was an interesting challenge. While the films still range in style and subject matter, representing the diversity of the various countries, there were so many opportunities to find resonances between recent films. For example, Ruth Beckerman’s The Dreamed Ones and Rita Azevedo Gomes’s Correspondences each take an experimental approach to the epistolary film, using letters between famed poets (Paul Celan and Ingeborg Bachman from Austria and Sophia de Mello Breyner and Jorge de Sena from Portugal) to explore themes of displacement and memory.
