DOCUMENT RESUME ED 085 812 CS 500 568 AUTHOR Reynolds, Lessie M. TITLE The Journey Toward Liberation for Fellini's Woman. PUB DATE Nov 73 NOTE 10p.; Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the Speech Communication Association (59th, New York City, November 8-11, 1973) EDRS PRICE MF-$0.65 HC-$3.29 DESCRIPTORS *Feminism; *Film Production Specialists; *Film Study; Individual Development; *Mass Media; Personal Growth; Role Perception; *Self Actualization; Social Attitudes; Social Values; Stereotypes; Womens Studies IDENTIFIERS *Characterization (Film); Fellini (Federico) ABSTRACT The characterizations of women in three of Federico Fellini's films can be used to demonstrate the process of self-actualization real women experience during the fulfillment of the promises of the women's liberation movement. The films "La Dolce Vita" and "8 1/2" portray traditional stereotypes of women with traditional societal roles. However, in "Juliet of the Spirits" Fellini creates a female character with full personality dimensions. A progression of gradual liberation of the female characters can be traced from "La Dolca Vita" through 8 1/2" to "Juliet of the Spirits." Also, there is a parallel between the personal growth of the female characters and the journey of Dante through his "Commedia." An understanding of feminism can be gained through the study of films and literature. • FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 56 Days That Will Rock Your Cinema World!
10 JAN 20 5 MAR 20 1 | 10 JAN 20 - 5 MAR 20 88 LOTHIAN ROAD | FILMHOUSECINEMA.COM FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 56 days that will rock your cinema world! Well, here we are again… it’s Awards season! I was reminded of such by a communication that came my way from AMPAS (the Oscar® people) listing nine categories’ shortlists of potential nominees. Now, they’ve been doing that shortlist thing with Foreign Language films for quite some time – there’s a lot of films out there in the world, it would be rather too much for the Academy members to have to watch them all! – but, to my knowledge, they’ve not before done it with any other category. It may be it’s for the same reason of sheer volume as above, but I guess what it also does is allows a greater number of films a reason to mention their Academy Award status in their advertising. I can see it now, “Academy Award Nomination shortlisted…” written on the poster. Where will it all end I wonder, “Academy Award Nomination eligible…”? As luck would have [nothing to do with] it, one of the films on the Foreign Language short list – which at this point in time seems the overwhelming favourite – is Bong Joon Ho’s utterly brilliant Parasite, which takes its place alongside a programme of films that is simplythe best line-up of new cinema I’ve seen in a long time. There’s not just the aforementioned South Korean masterpiece, there’s Sam Mendes’ extraordinary ‘one-take’ wonder 1917 (google ‘1917 behind the scenes featurette’ and prepare to simply have to see this film); Taika (‘Wilderpeople’) Waititi’s WWII, Nazi Germany-set, Jojo Rabbit; Armando Iannucci’s breathless Dickens, The Personal History of David Copperfield; Robert Egger’s uniquely bonkers, fog-bound The Lighthouse; Kidman, Robbie and Theron taking on the Fox News patriarchy in Bombshell; and to cap it all off, and possibly the best of the lot, Céline Sciamma’sexquisite Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

TO DISCOVER THAT _ THERE IS NOTHING TO DISCOVER: IMAGINATION, THE OPEN, AND THE MOVIES OF FEDERTCO FELL1NI By DAVID L. LAVERY A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE COUNCIL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 1978 COPYRIGHT 1978 David L. Lavery For Lee Bluestein (1938-1968) and John F. Reinhardt, who first showed me the Journey Out and Back and taught me to endure it. For W. R. R. , Taylor, my parents, Carol, Joyce, and Susan. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I think I have told you, but if I have not, you must have understood, that a man who has a vision is not able to use the power of it until after he has performed the vision on earth for the people to see. Black Elk In the rites of passage of many native American peoples it is common for a young man, approaching maturity, to embark on a vision quest into the wilderness in search of a message or revelation on which he might shape his existence. I would like to think of the follow- ing work as such a vision quest, and I wish here to thank those who were responsible in their various ways for helping me complete the quest. W. R. Robinson introduced me to Fellini and to the movies and taught me to see as well as an amblyopic blind person like myself could hope to. Taylor Scott brought me, I hope, back to earth, pronouncing, like Guido's producer, the magic words, "Down, definitely down," when I most needed to hear them.

  • Federico Fellini: a Life in Film
Federico Fellini: a life in film Federico Fellini was born in Rimini, the Marché, on 20th January 1920. He is recognized as one of the greatest and most influential filmmakers of all time. His films have ranked in polls such as ‘Cahiers du cinéma’ and ‘Sight & Sound’, which lists his 1963 film “8½” as the 10th-greatest film. Fellini won the ‘Palme d'Or’ for “La Dolce Vita”, he was nominated for twelve 'Academy Awards', and won four in the category of 'Best Foreign Language Film', the most for any director in the history of the Academy. He received an honorary award for 'Lifetime Achievement' at the 65th Academy Awards in Los Angeles. His other well-known films include 'I Vitelloni' (1953), 'La Strada' (1954), 'Nights of Cabiria' (1957), 'Juliet of the Spirits' (1967), 'Satyricon' (1969), 'Roma' (1972), 'Amarcord' (1973) and 'Fellini's Casanova' (1976). In 1939, he enrolled in the law school of the University of Rome - to please his parents. It seems that he never attended a class. He signed up as a junior reporter for two Roman daily papers: 'Il Piccolo' and 'lI Popolo di Roma' but resigned from both after a short time. He submitted articles to a bi- weekly humour magazine, 'Marc’Aurelio', and after 4 months joined the editorial board, writing a very successful regular column “But are you listening?” Through this work he established connections with show business and cinema and he began writing radio sketches and jokes for films. He achieved his first film credit - not yet 20 - as a comedy writer in “Il pirato sono io” (literally, “I am a pirate”), translated into English as “The Pirate’s Dream”.

  • Appendix 1: Selected Films
Appendix 1: Selected Films The very random selection of films in this appendix may appear to be arbitrary, but it is an attempt to suggest, from a varied collection of titles not otherwise fully covered in this volume, that approaches to the treatment of sex in the cinema can represent a broad church indeed. Not all the films listed below are accomplished – and some are frankly maladroit – but they all have areas of interest in the ways in which they utilise some form of erotic expression. Barbarella (1968, directed by Roger Vadim) This French/Italian adaptation of the witty and transgressive science fiction comic strip embraces its own trash ethos with gusto, and creates an eccentric, utterly arti- ficial world for its foolhardy female astronaut, who Jane Fonda plays as basically a female Candide in space. The film is full of off- kilter sexuality, such as the evil Black Queen played by Anita Pallenberg as a predatory lesbian, while the opening scene features a space- suited figure stripping in zero gravity under the credits to reveal a naked Jane Fonda. Her peekaboo outfits in the film are cleverly designed, but belong firmly to the actress’s pre- feminist persona – although it might be argued that Barbarella herself, rather than being the sexual plaything for men one might imagine, in fact uses men to grant herself sexual gratification. The Blood Rose/La Rose Écorchée (aka Ravaged, 1970, directed by Claude Mulot) The delirious The Blood Rose was trumpeted as ‘The First Sex Horror Film Ever Made’. In its uncut European version, Claude Mulot’s film begins very much like an arthouse movie of the kind made by such directors as Alain Resnais: unortho- dox editing and tricks with time and the film’s chronology are used to destabilise the viewer.
