Executive Director’s Annual Report 2014/2015

Lions and Tigers and BEARS oh my!

This was the year of the Lions and Tigers and BEARS oh my! public art project. Thanks to the leadership of Barb Reed and the Diamond event sponsorship by the Bob Rohrman Auto Group, the Art Museum brought 40 artist-created animals to downtown Lafayette and West Lafayette through the summer of 2015. The project planning began in 2013, with lead sponsorship from the Cities of Lafayette and West Kendall and Beatrice Smith Lafayette. In 2014, Bob Rohrman agreed to be the Diamond ($20,000) Sponsor and the Michael Richard Raisor Foundation became our Sapphire ($10,000) Sponsor. A combination of forty businesses, individuals, organizations and schools contributed sponsorships at the Platinum, Gold and Silver levels to make this project possible. 36 artists and artist groups, collaborated to create the wonderful creatures. Throughout the summer, community families and visitors filled the streets following the yellow brick road to see each lion, tiger and bear. We are thankful for the generosity of all participants and volunteers who made this a great success! The Zoo outdoor exhibition, featured 22 full-size zoo animals created by Detroit Artist and Grand Rapids ArtPrize finalist, Dale Teachout. The exhibit was professionally installed by our Museum Curator, Michael Crowthers. Displayed on the Fowler House lawn, next to the Art Museum, the exhibit ran from May to September. It drew crowds of visitors to the Art Museum. Over half of the animals were purchased, and the others were donated by the artist to the Columbian Park Zoo and Klondike Elementary School. After two years of work by both boards of directors, with the leadership of Sue Holder Price and Elizabeth Lockrey, a new 5-year Strategic Plan was adopted to guide the museum toward our goals. Our signature fund raising event, the Heart of Art wine dinner and auction, was a sellout for the sixth year in a row and held at the Lafayette Country Club. Thanks to the 230 attendees, a record net income of $58,000 was raised in support of the Art Museum programs. In celebration of their 50th year of service to the Art Museum, the Art League initiated their first endowment. Through membership contributions and a matching-gift campaign with the Greater Lafayette Community Foundation, they are nearing their goal of $50,000. We are thankful for their member’s hosting our events, providing art scholarships, purchasing work for the Permanent Collection and helping directly with financial support for our Educational Staff. After only two years, our new Second Century Club members reached a total of 84 individuals and 13 businesses who annually contribute $1,000 or more toward Art Museum membership. Second Century Club members have paved the way for our museum’s growth to continue to be one of the leading cultural organizations in the Greater Lafayette region. We are truly thankful for your generosity. Finally, I want to thank the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette Foundation board of directors for changing the IRS designation to a 509(a)(3) Type I Supporting Organization to the Art Museum and for adopting a policy to contribute 3-5% of the three-year trailing asset average to the Art Museum for operations. $47,529 was distributed to the Art Museum this year.

President’s Annual Report 2014/2015

What an exciting year it has been! Our community and both boards worked together to establish a comprehensive strategic plan to guide our Art Museum of Greater Lafayette through the next five years. This plan is now in the hands of our committees to accomplish the tactics that have been laid out for them. They are reporting to the Board on a quarterly basis on their progress. This could not have been accomplished without the hard work and dedication of co-chairs Sue Holder Price and Elizabeth Lockrey along with their committee and the efforts of the staff. Thank you to all involved. Many in our community came out to see our Lions and Tigers and BEARS oh my! along with The Zoo exhibit. This brought many new faces to our Museum and to our downtown. The joy reflected in the faces of the children as they interacted with the animals wa priceless. Recognition for its major impact in the city center area came from the Greater Lafayette Commerce with the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette’s selection as the recipient of the Digby Award. Dennis Carson states “It has brought hundreds of people downtown to experience a unique display of community driven art showcasing what a great, vibrant downtown we have in Lafayette-West Lafayette.” Thank you to Barb Reed and Kendall Smith along with the Special Events Committee, staff and other volunteers for their many hours committed to this project. Our ArtSmart: Indiana team has been working very hard on our upcoming Indiana Bicentennial celebration in 2016. They lead others in the State with their efforts in this arena. They have applied and received grants to install iPads and iPad enclosures in West Lafayette and Tippecanoe County Libraries with interactive educational activities and games for children of all ages. They have sent 7,000 letters and 6,000 bookmarks to fourth grade art teachers throughout our State. They are also partnering with the Children’s Museum of to present a special workshop and our Lafayette Symphony Orchestra to provide a concert featuring Indiana composers and lyricists with accompanying works of art projected on the screen during a concert. We will also showcase a Bicentennial Exhibition on The Golden Age of Indiana Art in our Weil Gallery sponsored by the Museum’s Art League. Our Art League is celebrating its 50th year in 2015 supporting our Art Museum. They provide our Museum with financial support, volunteers, and gifts of art. This year they have also established an endowment to benefit the Museum with a goal of $50,000. If you have not yet had an opportunity to donate, please contact our Art League. Our Second Century Club continues to grow and to make a strong impact for us. We traveled to this year for a private tour of the home and art collection of Robert Buford, a private client of Sotheby’s, and a behind the scenes tour of Christie’s. What an exciting trip it was! Thank you to Sharon Theobald and her staff as well as the hard work of our Development Committee for making this trip one to remember. Our Foundation has had a productive year also. I want to thank Prella McBride for working closely with our Museum Board this year. The pathway has been laid to have more involvement and individuals serving on committees from our Foundation Board. As I reflect on my two years serving as President, much has been accomplished. Thank you to our many volunteers, donors, and Board members for their countless hours of giving and saying yes when asked. I also want to say a very special thank you to our staff. They also give countless hours and do whatever is needed behind the scenes to bring the wonderful exhibitions, education, and our permanent collection to the community. They always find a way of making it happen seamlessly. Our Art Museum of Greater Lafayette is a true gem in our community and I am very proud to be a small part of it.

Art League Annual Report 2014/2015

The Art League (AL) of the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette (AMGL) had a very good year! Early in the year a special committee chaired by Sue Carr and Josette Rolley began work on designing a plan for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the AL which begins in Sept. 2015. One of the goals was to design a fundraiser that would benefit the AL and the AMGL in the next fifty years. On Dec. 8, 2014, an agreement was signed with the Community Foundation of Greater Lafayette (CFGL) to establish an endowment entitled Art Museum of Greater Lafayette Art League Endowment. Timing was ideal because the Lilly Foundation had given a grant to CFGL to match 1:2 all gifts from individuals to community designated endowments. At the time of this report over $35,000 has been donated to the fund, with a goal of $50,000.

Another innovation during the year was the creation of an AL webpage. Jim Dammon donated his services and created his 100th webpage. It is linked directly with the AMGL webpage and provides opportunity for payment of dues, donations, and event registrations. Address is: www.artleaguelaf.org

With 156 members, the AL enjoyed many educational and enjoyable meetings. All of the programs were planned and coordinated by AL First Vice Presidents Mary Jo Sparrow and Judy Loudon and were generally held in the Shook Room in the AMGL. In September, the Welcome Reception was held. Sharon Theobald dressed and talked as Laura Anne Fry and presented program on Rookwood and Beyond. In October, Artist and AL member Kimlien Tran spoke about My Journey into Art. In November, Artist and AL member Kathryn Clark, enlightened membership with A life Adventure in Handmade Paper and Fine Art. In December, the annual Holiday Tea and Bling on a Budget, benefiting the Scholarship Fund was planned by Kathy Busch, Winnie Adler, Nancy Kildsig, Peggy Housley and enjoyed by all. In January, Diana Couk May, Artist and AL member, talked about the art in her AMGL exhibition, Push and Pull. In February, A Book discussion of The Passion of Artemisia: A Novel, by Susan Vreeland and Artemisia: A Novel by Alexandra Lapierre were explored in a discussion led by Nick Schenkel, West Lafayette Library Director. In March, Kendall Smith and Michael Crowthers presented program on Artists from our Permanent Collection: Video Interviews Funded by the NEA. The last meeting of the year was in May and in addition to being the annual business meeting, program was presented by Linda Copas, Americus Quilt Club, on Continuing the Thread. All but one of these programs involved lunch which was catered by AL member Judi Painter and arranged by AL Second Vice Presidents Kathy Busch and Carol Czaja. The Joint meeting with the Symphony Guild, including dessert, tea and music provided by the Lafayette Flute Choir, was held in the Haan Mansion with owners Bob and Ellie Haan leading tours of the Indiana art within the mansion/museum.

Special events and classes were offered for members. These included a field trip to John Christian’s home Samara, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, with lunch afterwards; A watercolor workshop with instructors Lorie Amick and LaDonna Vohar; a tour of Twinrocker Handmade Paper in Brookston with lunch following; a pottery workshop with members making “artsy- heartsy” platters, led by Jane and Jeff Boswell; a Tea honoring Artist and AL member Mary Sixbey, held in the home of AL member Joan Sozen, with a program on The Life of an Artist; Reflections on Mary Sixbey.

The Art League continued in its tradition of purchasing a piece of art for the AMGL. “Wagons of Posey County” by Kathryn Clark was donated. The AL continued its strong support of the Art Museum with a budgeted $12,000 allocation, plus the awarding of scholarships for art museum classes. Receptions were provided for AMGL exhibit openings and coordinated by Shirley Bosler. A mural, “Dream Café” created by Sunny Miller, was commissioned by the AL for the Lafayette Adult Resource Academy. Major fund raiser was the annual Fashion Show and Brunch held in the Best Western and chaired by Carol Purdy and LaDonna Vohar.

The Art League looks forward to the Celebration of its first fifty years during 2015-2016, while also looking forward and planning for the next fifty years.

COLLECTIONS COMMITTEE ANNUAL REPORT JULY 1, 2014 - JUNE 30, 2015

This exciting year for the collection has included noteworthy gifts, impressive Museum purchases, the installation of new on-site collection storage, and the completion of a NEA grant focused on documentation of artists and their works in the Permanent Collection. A notable donated work was the untitled portrait by renowned artist Everett Raymond Kinstler. Kinstler has completed over 1200 portraits in his career that include numerous well-known personalities, more than 50 cabinet members, and seven Presidents. It is the first work by this artist in the collection.

Another wonderful addition to the collection was the watercolor, Wagons of Posey County, by Kathryn Clark. This refined piece was generously purchased for the Museum by the Art League and adds to the depth of works that the collection has by this artist.

While visiting the Art Museum for a lecture on his exhibition, Rudy Pozzatti: An Indiana Treasure, the artist surprised the Museum with a gift of a complete suite of his work, The Twelve Labors of Hercules. This exquisite gift contained thirteen lithographs depicting each of the hero’s treacherous labors and a portrait of Hercules himself. Three of these works were framed and two were placed on display in the Grace Foyer.

Several contemporary sculptures were added to the collection at the conclusion of the Making it in Crafts II exhibition. These were Master # 1050 - Vessel, Master # 1750 - Vessel, Master # 1753 - Vessel, all three by Bennett Bean; Sedona Night, by Chris Hawthorne; and Small Cocoon on Yellow Base, by Judit Varga. All three are significant artists in their respectable fields, and these are the first works by the artists in the collection.

Kathryn and Howard Clark presented twenty-three works of art to the collections committee that included significant artists such as Charles Hill, Robert Rivers, and Stanley Rosenthal. These pieces were swiftly followed by the generosity of Michael & Kathy Atwell who donated, An Old Drawing Room, by Walace Nutting, and Lidded Plate, by Dan Englekee.

Meanwhile, Rudy Pozzatti was preparing to surprise the Art Museum again. The artist presented the Museum with six complete suites of his work that cover a range of techniques and subject matter that the Museum had not yet collected. These limited edition suites were Israel Words & Images, Darwin’s Bestiary, Physiologus Theobaldi Episcopi De Naturis Duodecim Animalium, Stations of the Cross, Bugs, and XII Romans.

The collection also added four more stone carvings to its already impressive collection of Inuit artwork due to three gifts from Mona Berg, and one gift from the estate of Albert Ewell.

Conservation has continued to be a priority for the collections committee and as such four works were taken to Barry Bauman in Chicago for treatment. These were Taxco, Mexico, by George Wilstach; Untitled snow scene, by George Wilstach; Summer Peace, by Alberta Shulz; and Untitled portrait, by Everett Raymond Kinstler. Our continued gratitude goes to Barry Bauman for his work in helping preserve our collection.

Proper storage goes hand in hand with conservation in the long-term goal of protecting the collection. To address storage needs the Permanent Collection storage room was completely reorganized and seven new bins were custom made for the space. These bins were created to give suitable space to newly acquired sculptures and oversized paintings.

Finally, this year the Museum received a grant from the NEA to focus on the Permanent Collection. The grant was centered on documenting the artists and works in our collection through audio and video interviews, photography, and a series of presentations to our members. Seven interviews were conducted and posted online for the public to have continued access to free of charge. Also, the Museum hosted presentations on the artists as well as went out in the community to share these superb stories.

NATURAL DISASTER COLOR: PETRONIO BENDITO

MAY 9, 2014 – SEPTEMBER 7, 2014 MCDONALD GALLERY For the past ten years, Petronio Bendito has focused on the examination of color. For this series of large-scale abstract digital prints, he conducted color studies in which he devised color schemes based on natural disasters such as the Haiti earthquake, landslides in Brazil and the tsunami in Japan. The works function as an interface that acknowledges the fragil- ity of human kind and honors humanity in a subliminal way. Hope, remembrance and resilience emerge as Bendito transposes depictions of order and beauty. Bendito is an Associate Professor of Art and Design in the Purdue University Department of Visual and Performing Arts.

A COLORFUL NARRATIVE: BILL SMITH PAINTINGS BY BOYD SMITH

MAY 9, 2014 – SEPTEMBER 7, 2014 SHOOK GALLERY This series of paintings focused on special moments in the life of the artist’s grandfather. Smith combines the use of oil and acrylic paint to explore depth and color. This style allows the artist to create texture and detail combined with the use of vibrant colors to create organic shapes in each painting that symbolize life, energy and human skin tones. The result is an exciting combination of ideas in brilliant color.

ABOUT FACE: PORTRAITS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION

SEPTEMBER 12, 2014 – APRIL 12, 2015 WEIL GALLERY “B” This intriguing exhibit went way beyond traditional portraiture, featuring works in seven different media, exploring the human face through the eyes of many artists. Five of the works were recent acquisitions, and three had never before been exhibited. Compositionally, portrait art can vary. The subject can be sitting, standing or reclining; clothed or nude; engaging in an activity; or surrounded by elements denoting occupation, interest or social status. Portraits can be formal depictions or informal slices of life that allow the viewer to feel as though they are getting a peek into a private world.

FEAST OF THE HUNTERS MOON: PAINTINGS BY KIMLIEN TRAN

SEPTEMBER 12, 2014 – NOVEMBER 2, 2014 SHOOK GALLERY An exciting new look at the traditional festival at Fort Quiatenon remembering the annual fall gathering of the French and Native Americans in the midi1700’s, on the banks of the Wabash. This series of paintings depicted scenes derived from her memory and imagination during the annual Feast of the Hunter’s Moon festivals. This was presented in collabora- tion with the Tippecanoe County Historical Association.

MAKING IT IN CRAFTS II: A NATIONAL INVITATIONAL

SEPTEMBER 26, 2014 – DECEMBER 28, 2014 EAST AND MCDONALD GALLERIES This exhibition featured the art of approximately 60 nationally professional craft artists (clay, glass, metal, wood-working and fiber), from Maine to Oregon, who make their living by creating and selling fine art crafts. Many of the most renowned artisans are juried participants in the most prestigious art shows in the U.S. including Chicago’s SOFA at Navy Pier, Grand Rapids’ Art Prize; and Ann Arbor’s Summer Art Fair.

Guest curator, Jim Sondgeroth, personally selected and invited each artist. This unique exhibit expands on the successful Making it in Crafts exhibit featured in the Art Museum in 2011. It is one of the most exciting arts and crafts shows to be presented in the Midwest.

NOVEMBER 13, 2014 – APRIL 12 2015 WEIL GALLERY “A” The Art Museum of Greater Lafayette was excited to exhibit works by internationally renowned and prolific Indiana artist, Rudy Pozzatti. Pozzatti is skilled in numerous mediums and exhibited works created by copper engraving, woodcut, etching, collage and color relief to name a handful. Pozzatti’s artistic vision has remained true while fluidly moving into more mediums. He is a true Hoosier Treasure!

PUSH AND PULL: DAN ANNARINO AND DIANA MAY

JANUARY 16, 2015 – MARCH 1, 2015 EAST GALLERY New works by two established Greater Lafayette artists excited us with their contrasting styles and media. Both of these professional artists continue to broaden their focus with new, yet familiar, creative expression. Dan Annarino explores the great outdoors through his graphic designer eye. His colorful and mysterious Indiana images defy traditional landscape painting and delight the viewer with his unique approach.

Diana May creates three-dimensional clay sculpture using various forms combined to create whimsical and thoughtful objects. For this exhibition, Diana created a body of new work which played on the rooftops and chimneys of Europe, inspired by her recent visit to England. A woman of many talents, she often pulls in steel and other materials to bring her intricate compositions to life. This was the first time Annarino and May have exhibited together.

JAZZ TEMPLATES IN SILHOUETTE: ROBERT PEPPERS

JANUARY 16, 2015 – MARCH 1, 2015 MCDONALD GALLERY Robert Peppers is a Professor of Drawing and Painting, Ohio University. He was previously the Assistant Director of Purdue’s Black Cultural Center. Professor Peppers is deeply inspired by the experience of listening to jazz, even to the extent of creating pictorial equivalents for specific musical work. Mixed media works are direct responses to jazz from an intuitive perspective. Beginning as doodles that he sketches while listening to a jazz tune, his mixed-media work gradually evolves from the Thought-Forms into Jazz Templates in Silhouette.

The conceptual framework of “Jazz” thought forms by Annie Besant and C. W. Laedbeater parallel Professor Pepper’s current research on how visual artists can incorporate new inter- pretations of jazz aesthetics through a collage approach to image-making and strategies of presentation. The jazz creative process evolves from a need to take formal elements apart and reconstruct those elements in order to exhilarate the human spirit.

THE ZOO

MAY 5, 2015 – SEPTEMBER 8, 2015 FOWLER HOUSE GROUNDS A family- friendly exhibition of over 30 full-sized animals created by Detriot artist Dale Teachout. He is an assemblage artist who, as a child, had a junk drawer with broken pieces of things that he would make into collages with hot glue and wire. He enjoyed pop culture, read many comic books and watched many Sci-Fi and sports television shows. This influenced his dreams and imagination. These interactions along with his obsession for junk and found objects influence his direction as an artist. Working with his hands, twisting, bending, cutting, etc. helps his imagination move beyond two dimensional drawings to three dimensional figures.

LANGUAGE OF THE ROAD: MEDITATIONS ON NATURE, REPAIR AND REVERIE

MAY 8, 2015 – SEPTEMBER 6, 2015 EAST GALLERY An internationally recognized artist, Charles A. Gick is a Professor of Art in the Department of Art and Design at Purdue University, where he teaches painting, drawing and installation art. He holds a MFA from Northwestern University and a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute. As an interdisciplinary artist, he combines video, performance, painting, photography and assemblage.

The Language of the Toad suggests that a language emerges as we travel along the internal and external pathways of our lives. This body of work blurs the line between surrealism and abstraction. One is offered a place to explore and contemplate the quiet dialogues formed and the beauty found in the cerebral and physical gestures, marks, and stains that we leave behind in our everyday encounters with nature, repair and reverie.

CONTINUING THE THREAD: AMERICUS QUILT CLUB CENTENNIAL

MAY 8, 2015 – SEPTEMBER 6, 2015 MCDONALD AND SHOOK GALLERIES Many people assume that, in the past, most quilts were made out of necessity. The truth is that women of all walks of life made their quilts to add beauty to their home. Quilting has always been a source of artistic expression. This exhibit displayed outstanding examples of handmade quilts created by Club members through the decades.

The Americus Quilting Club was founded in 1915, with the sole purpose of helping finance the Americus Union Church that was the first church in the area. The proceeds from quilting for others were donated to various local charities. The Club helps preserve the art of hand-quilting by teaching, practicing and demonstrating hand-quilting techniques. The Americus Quilting Club is the oldest active group in Indiana. A review of their history was on display in the Mickey Shook Gallery.

ARTSMART: THE LEGACY OF T.C. STEELE

MAY 8, 2015 – OCTOBER 18, 2015 WEIL GALLERY “A” Theodore Clement Steele was born in Owen County, on Sept. 11, 1847. He moved to Waveland, southwest of Crawfordsville, when he was 5 years old and later became perhaps the most famous of the Hoosier Group of American impressionist painters. Other painters in the group included William Forsyth, Ottis Adams, Richard B. Gruelle and . These five artists trained abroad but returned to Indiana and developed a distinctive style of landscape painting. Paintings included in this exhibit were from the Art Museum’s Permanent Collection and on loan from the Haan Mansion Museum, thanks to Robert and Ellen Haan.

FOUNDATIONS AND FORWARD: WORKS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION

MAY 8, 1215- OCTOBER 18, 2015 WEIL GALLERY “B” Strong foundations are essential for the future. In 1909, the founders of the Art Museum established the Lafayette Art Association, which laid the groundwork for amassing a remark- able Permanent Collection for the next 100 years and beyond. The works in this exhibition featured numerous “foundation” pieces beginning with the first acquisition, The Cruise of the Elida, by F. Louis Mora. Over time, works of varying subject matter and medium have been acquired. However, the caliber of the work is the paramount concern. Magnificent examples of craftsmanship included Henry Ossawa Tanner’s Entrance to Kasbah, Frederick Grant’s The Red Parasol, and Thomas Hart Benton’s Planting, to name but a few. 24 | Art Museum of Greater Lafayette
