The lesson is based on a Samba dance and there is a video which is broken up into short teaching sequences that you can use alongside these teaching notes. The lesson has been produced for 2Simple by Ella Mesma, who is an established professional artist with over 15 years of experience in dance and movement. Ella is of mixed heritage and was born in Kent, now based near Leeds, where she studied politics, and her hometown Bristol. Ella began her dance career dancing salsa in clubs, and training samba in Brazil where she paraded in carnival as a Passista in 2006. As a trained dancer, performance highlights have included Russell Maliphant Company, Lea Anderson (The Chomondeleys), Olympics Opening Ceremony, Southpaw and Uchenna. Therefore, the objective of this work was to carry out a collection of publications on NTFPs in Brazil, until 2019, available in the Scopus database, presenting a bibliometric review and the state of the art of this theme from the evaluation of these publications, discussing the challenges of Brazilian legislation on NTFPs. After screening the articles of interest, 196 documents were evaluated, in which they were observed institutions and authors, analyzing networks of citations and terms used, areas of forest sciences and sciences that encompass the most explored biomes and the most studied species. The results showed that the concern to research on NTFPs in Brazil began in the 1990s, with an increase in the number of publications over the years. Besides that, the research on NTFPs is multidisciplinary, with emphasis on the areas of Agricultural and Biological Sciences and Environmental Science.

Taxonomy of Brazil’s national tree: Paubrasilia echinata (Leguminosae) Mathew Rees August 2019 School of Biological Sciences, University of Edinburgh & Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the MSc in the Biodiversity and Taxonomy of Plants 1 Abstract Background: Paubrasilia echinata (Lam.) E. Gagnon, H. C. Lima & G. P. Lewis is the national tree of Brazil and an endangered species endemic to the Mata Atlantica. Three morphotypes are commonly identified based on the size of the folioles but it is unclear if they represent distinct taxa or a single polymorphic species. This dissertation aims at clarifying the taxonomic position of the three morphotypes and informing conservation decisions. Methods: A comprehensive morphometric study based on 74 geographically representative herbarium specimens from the entire distribution of the species was coupled with phylogenomic investigation of genotyping-by-sequencing data and multivariate ecological analyses of climate data. Results: We found that the three morphotypes do not match separately evolving lineages. Rather, P.echinata is composed of five clades that are geographically structured and two lineages show signs of ongoing gene flow. Conclusions: P. echinata is best treated as a single species composed of evolutionary and geographically distinct lineages. Morphologically diagnosable characters are missing to describe sub-species that would help inform conservation measures whilst reflecting evolutionary history. It also includes at least 54 species traded for their resin e.g. Aquilaria and Gyrinops, and trees traded for their medicinal and other desirable properties. The Global Tree Assessment (GTA), an initiative launched in 2015, aims to assess the conservation status of all the world's tree species by 2020 as a basis for conservation policy implementation and action. With over 60,000 known tree species, the GTA is the largest biodiversity assessment ever undertaken at a species level.

Because the Atlantic Forest covers Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay (Figure S1), we started with a list of names of native trees of South America compiled by Grandtner and Chevrette (2013). We crossed this preliminary list of names with other sources to retrieve missing names: the Brazilian Flora 2020 (version 393.158) downloaded in June 2018 (http://reflora.jbrj.gov.br, Ranzato Filardi et al., 2018); and the Southern Cone Flora projects downloaded in July 2018 (http://www.darwin.edu.ar, Zuloaga et al., 2008). We also obtained missing names from other projects working with tree composition and diversity in the Neotropics, namely the Amazon Tree Diversity Network (ter Steege et al., 2016), NeoTropTree (Oliveira-Filho, 2010), and TreeCo (Lima et al., 2015). We added to this list some common typos (e.g., Copaifera langsdorfii for Copaifera langsdorffii), to avoid the exclusion of occurrences with misspelled names. The final input list had 66,895 names for South American trees, including valid species and infra-specific names, synonyms, orthographical variants and common typos. The search for records based on this input list resulted in a total of 3.11 million records from 543 collections found in speciesLink, JABOT, SNDB and GBIF (Appendix A).
