KLJUČNE RIJEČI: Bilten, Ciliga, časopis, Europa, Hrvatska, Hrvatska revija, hrvatsko iseljeništvo, iseljeničke organizacije, Istra, Jugoslavija, Kušan, Na pragu sutrašnjice, Nikolić, Nova Hrvatska, Sibir, Sovjetski Savez, Tito SUMMARY After his parting, Ante Ciliga left behind him practically a whole century of active political life. He was born on the 20th of February 1898 in a croatian catholic family in Istria. He has passed through two world wars, many revolutions and rebellions and has witnessed arising and vanishing of a number of countries. He survived soviet penal colonies and Siberia, Jasenovac and prisons in Zagreb, Belgrade, Trieste and Pula. Many of his friends from the prime of their lives have left this world and so many personal tragedies and health disorders continued to appear in a years to come. Then again, from one of the sadest stories that a human could possibly endure, Ciliga managed to absorb an amazing strenght and creative force that made him publish books, start and run magazines, but it also made him incredibly informed about important national and global issues. He has been equally enthusiastic about croatian, russian and angolan affairs and in constant pursuit for answers to the question why has something happened and what could the consequences of those happenings mean. Since he has always been an outsider of any political party and therefore free from chains of the Communist party and its collective consciousness, he could write his thoughts as well as conclusions and freely speek his mind. He has been displaced from his native land and forced to wander throughout Europe therefore he spent all those years fighting against Tito and yugoslavia totalitarianism. In 1958 he started Bilten Hrvatskog Narodnog Odbora u Italiji in order to ensure one place where he could publish his thoughts hoping that those would be influential. As the time passed by Bilten changed and so did the boards and organizations. In order to secure his position of an outsider of any political party, Ciliga left all of the emigrant organizations and started a new magazine Na pragu sutrašnjice all by himself. This magazine never could have reached the popularity of Hrvatska revija and Nova Hrvatska and Ciliga could not gather big team of cooperants as his colleagues Jakša Kušan and Vinko Nikolić could have. On the other hand, no other man entirely on his own and practically with no means at all could ever do as much as he did during the 10-year period of this magazin. Na pragu sutrašnjice gathered incompatible political ideologies and then those started their common fight for one goal – free Croatia.

  • On the Concealment of Ante Pavelić in Austria in 1945-1946
UDK: 314.743(436)-05 Pavelić, A.''1945/1946'' Izvorni znanstveni članak Received: September 5, 2011 Accepted: November 7, 2011 ON THE CONCEALMENT OF ANTE PAVELIĆ IN AUSTRIA IN 1945-1946 Ante DELIĆ* Based on available American and British documents and thus-far unconsulted papers left behind by Ante Pavelić, the leader of the Independent State of Croatia, the author analyzes Pavelić’s concealment in Austria and the role of Western agencies therein. Some of the relevant literature indicates that the Catholic Church and Western agencies took part in Pavelić’s concealment. The author concludes that all such conjecture lacks any foundation in the available sources. Key words: Ante Pavelić, Western allies, extradition, Yugoslavia Historiography is generally familiar with the fate of the army of the Inde- pendent State of Croatia and the civilian population which, at the end of the war in early May 1945, withdrew toward Austria in fear of advancing commu- nist forces, with the aim of surrendering to the Allies. These people were ex- tradited to the Yugoslav army with the explanation that they would be treated in compliance with the international laws of war. As it transpired, this “treat- ment” was one of the most tragic episodes in the history of the Croatian nation, known under the terms Bleiburg and the Way of the Cross.1 A portion of these refugees who managed to elude this fate ended up in Allied refugee camps, mostly in Italy, Austria and Germany.2 However, even in these camps, besides * Ante Delić, MA, University of Zadar, Zadar, Republic of Croatia 1 Cf.

  • Yugoslav Destruction After the Cold War
STASIS AMONG POWERS: YUGOSLAV DESTRUCTION AFTER THE COLD WAR A dissertation presented by Mladen Stevan Mrdalj to The Department of Political Science In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the field of Political Science Northeastern University Boston, Massachusetts December 2015 STASIS AMONG POWERS: YUGOSLAV DESTRUCTION AFTER THE COLD WAR by Mladen Stevan Mrdalj ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities of Northeastern University December 2015 2 Abstract This research investigates the causes of Yugoslavia’s violent destruction in the 1990’s. It builds its argument on the interaction of international and domestic factors. In doing so, it details the origins of Yugoslav ideology as a fluid concept rooted in the early 19th century Croatian national movement. Tracing the evolving nationalist competition among Serbs and Croats, it demonstrates inherent contradictions of the Yugoslav project. These contradictions resulted in ethnic outbidding among Croatian nationalists and communists against the perceived Serbian hegemony. This dynamic drove the gradual erosion of Yugoslav state capacity during Cold War. The end of Cold War coincided with the height of internal Yugoslav conflict. Managing the collapse of Soviet Union and communism imposed both strategic and normative imperatives on the Western allies. These imperatives largely determined external policy toward Yugoslavia. They incentivized and inhibited domestic actors in pursuit of their goals. The result was the collapse of the country with varying degrees of violence. The findings support further research on international causes of civil wars.

  • The Case of General Ante Moškov 1945-1947 Or General Ante Moškov and the So Called Ustashi Gold 1945-19471
UDK: 355-05 Moškov, A.“1945/1947” Received: September 4, 2017 Accepted: October 24, 2017 Izvorni znanstveni članak The Case of General Ante MOškov 1945-1947 or General ANTE MOškov AND THE SO CALLED Ustashi Gold 1945-19471 Ante DELIĆ* Similarly to many other former Independent State of Croatia [NDH]2 officials, after retreating to Austria, General Ante Moškov was not a mere passive observer of future developments but rather directed his activity, under the newly created circumstances, against the recently established Yugoslav Communist regime. Also, Moškov was the first among the former high NDH officials, who, after the war, publicly took an oppositional stand towards his quite recent leader, Poglavnik Ante Pavelić. In doing so, he was not motivated by any principled political reasons, but rather by the discord around the evaluation of Pavelić’s role, primarily from the viewpoint of the crash he had experienced. Closely connected to Moškov is also the issue of the so called Ustashi gold, taken out of Croatia during the retreat, which really marked the most his post-1945 activities. This period of his second emigration is the subject of the present paper. Based on the available bibliography, as well as the available both domestic and foreign archival sources – some of which have so far been unknown and as such have never been used – the present paper tries to additionally enlighten some unknown and controversial episodes from Moškov’s postwar activities. Key Words: Ante Moškov, Ante Pavelić, the so called Ustashi gold, the Vatican, Krunoslav Draganović, Western allies * Ante Delić, Ph. D., Department of Teachers and Preschool Teachers Education of the Univer- sity of Zadar, Zadar, Croatia 1 The present article constitutes a considerably expanded talk from the 5th Congress of Croa- tian Historians: Crises, Conflicts, and Solidarity in the Historical Perspective, Zadar, October 5-8, 2016.

However, soon after the revolution many within the Bolshevik Party, including Trotsky, were denouncing Soviet bureaucracy as a persistent problem. In fact, for Trotsky the problem of Soviet bureaucracy became the central political and theoretical issue that preoccupied him for the remainder of his life. This study examines the development of Leon Trotsky’s views on that subject from the first years after the Russian Revolution through the completion of his work The Revolution Betrayed in 1936. In his various writings over these years Trotsky expressed three main understandings of the nature of the problem: During the civil war and the first years of NEP he denounced inefficiency in the distribution of supplies to the Red Army and resources throughout the economy as a whole.

  • ANTE CILIGA (1898-1992): Život NA POVIJESNIM Raskrižjima
ANTE CILIGA (1898-1992): ŽiVOT NA POVIJESNIM RASKRiŽJIMA Stephen Schwartz San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco UDK 32-05 Ciliga, A. 929 Ciliga, A. Pregledni rad Primljeno: 16. 5. 1995. Smrt hrvatskoga i južnoslavenskoga političkog komentatora dr. • Hur Tito Tog Över Jugoslaviska Kommunistpartiet Ur Revolutionary History, Vol 8, Nr 1 (2001)
1 Ante Ciliga Hur Tito tog över Jugoslaviska Kommunistpartiet Ur Revolutionary History, Vol 8, nr 1 (2001).

Zagreb, 2010. UDK: 341.326(73=411.16)''1945/…''(093.3) 929 Pavelić, A. Izvorni znanstveni članak Primljeno: 14. 1. 2010.
