A Historical Survey of Socio-Political Administration in Akure Region up to the Contemporary Period
European Scientific Journal August edition vol. 8, No.18 ISSN: 1857 – 7881 (Print) e - ISSN 1857- 7431 A HISTORICAL SURVEY OF SOCIO-POLITICAL ADMINISTRATION IN AKURE REGION UP TO THE CONTEMPORARY PERIOD Afe, Adedayo Emmanuel, PhD Department of Historyand International Studies,AdekunleAjasin University,Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria Abstract Thepaper examines the political transformation of Akureregion from the earliest times to the present. The paper traces these stages of political development in order to demonstrate features associated with each stage. It argues further that pre-colonial Akure region, like other Yoruba regions, had a workable political system headed by a monarch. However, the Native Authority Ordinance of 1916, which brought about the establishment of the Native Courts and British judicial administration in the region led to the decline in the political power of the traditional institution.Even after independence, the traditional political institution has continually been subjugated. The work relies on both oral and written sources, which were critically examined. The paper, therefore,argues that even with its present political status in the contemporary Nigerian politics, the traditional political institution is still relevant to the development of thesociety. Keywords: Akure, Political, Social, Traditional and Authority Introduction The paper reviews the political administration ofAkure region from the earliest time to the present and examines the implication of the dynamics between the two periods may have for the future. Thus,assessment of the indigenous political administration, which was prevalent before the incursion of the colonial administration, the political administration during the colonial rule and the present political administration in the region are examined herein.However, Akure, in this context, comprises the present Akure North, Akure South, and Ifedore Local Government Areas of Ondo State, Nigeria. -

E -mail address: [email protected] Abstract Building raw materials and processed products can vary greatly in radionuclide contents depending on the character and the geology of the their origin. 160 samples of Brick block and 160 samples of Concrete block for constructing dwellings were collected across the Ekiti State, Nigeria. The activity concentrations of 40 K, 226 Ra and 232 Th in the Brick block and Concrete block samples were determined by using gamma-ray spectrometry using a 7.62 cm × 7.62 cm NaI(Tl) detector of dimension, housed in a 6 cm thick lead shield. The results show that the mean activity concentration values of 572.6 ± 175.9 Bq kg -1, 47.9 ± 9.8 Bq kg -1 and 63.8 ± 9.4 Bq kg -1 for 40 K, 226 Ra and 232 Th respectively in concrete blocks are higher compared to the the mean activity concentration values 351.1 ± 3.1 Bq kg -118.7 ± 6.2 Bq kg -1 and 39.8 ± 3.5 Bq kg -1obtained in brick blocks. The absorbed dose rate, Annual dose equivalent, the external hazard and the qualification coefficients were determined. -

Justus b a Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti, Ado-Ekiti, 360231, Nigeria b Department of Statistics, Federal Polytechnic Ile-Oluji, Ile-Oluji, 3751110, Nigeria Received: 15 March 2017; Accepted: 13 February 2019; Published: 08 April 2019 Abstract It’s is no longer news that the Local Government (Third-tier of government in Nigeria) has not been able to optimally discharge its responsibilities according to its mandate. This had raised serious policy and research concerns that resulted to several reformative approaches in a bid to restructuring the system for efficient service delivery in the past decade. One major unpopular reason for inefficient service delivery was poor administration in the Local Government as a result of unbalanced distribution of personnel by cadre and gender in each local government in the state. This had not only hampered local government administration but also impeded adequate provision of expected services to local populace in line with its mandate as enshrined in the fourth schedule of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Application of Statistical analysis using Chi-square Test of Independence showed that distribution of employees by cadre depends on local government in post in the year under study. -

l o rna f Wa ou s OPEN ACCESS Freely available online J te l a R n e o s i o t u a International Journal of r n c r e e t s n I ISSN: 2252-5211 Waste Resources Research Article Water Quality Assessment of Groundwater (Hand-Dug Wells) in Abeokuta North Local Government, Nigeria Falola TO1*, Adetoro IO and Idowu OA2 1Student at Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria; 2Nigeria Department of Biological Sciences, University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria ABSTRACT Groundwater is the major source of water for municipal use in the AbeokutaNorth Local Government of Nigeria. However, there is a tendency for its quality to deviate from recommended standards as most groundwater sources are close to regions prone to erosion and most well are not usually covered. The tragedy is that the adverse effect might creep into the ecosystem and affects humanity if a regular check on the quality is not been made. The Geographical location and altitude of each well location were taken using Global Positioning System (GPS). The moderate PH range (6.30-7.36) can be linked to low values of TDS (352 mg/L) and EC (695 ms/cm) which are within the standard recommended for drinking- indicate a low concentration of salt contents. The relationship between the parameters shows a direct trend with the hydraulic head. Hence, groundwater sources (wells) in Abeokuta North Local Government are good for drinking. International Conference on Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS-2016) May 24-25, 2016 Paris (France) Les Faux Amis Entre Les Langues Igbo Et Yoruba Dr Kate Ndukauba Abia State University, Uturu, Nigeria Abstract: En traduction, les faux amis sont les mots qui, dans des langues différentes, semblent avoir le même sens mais qui en fait, ont des sens différents. Parfois, ils ont la même forme ou des formes identiques, ce qui peut dérouter un traducteur qui ne fait pas bien attention. Il peut y avoir des faux amis entre n’importe qu’elles langues en contact surtout pendant une activité traduisante. Dans cette communication, on compte relever les faux amis entre l’Igbo et le Yoruba, deux langues nigérianes qui appartiennent à la famille des langues dite Niger-Congo. On va parler des deux langues sous étude, discuter les causes des faux amis et les problèmes qui en découlent, et puis suggérer des moyens d’y faire face. Tout cela pour sensibiliser les apprenants et les professeurs des deux langues aussi bien que les traducteurs pour qu’ils fassent bien attention au cours de leur travail pour rester fidèle au sens de ce qui est dit, lu ou traduit. Mots clés: traduction, langue, sens, fidélité, sémantique, orthographe. 1. Introduction Les faux amis constituent un obstacle énorme à une bonne traduction, car le traducteur, s’il ne prend pas garde, peut facilement faire fausse route. Les faux amis se voient entre n’importe quelles langues, qu’elles soient internationales ou locales. Dans cette présentation, on va relever quelques faux amis entre la langue Igbo et la langue Yoruba, deux langues locales nigérianes, dans l’objectif d’attirer l’attention des apprenants des langues et des traducteurs sur l’obstacle pour ne pas se faire piègés. -

Omolola4 1234Dept. of Computer Science & Info Technology, Bowen University, Iwo, Nigeria Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT In recent years researchers and experts have traditionally focused on how to enhance the look and functionality of how life issues are been tackled with respect to Africa cultural tradition for academic purposes and the development of cultural traditional system. Also, the discrimination between English and Yoruba language in the south west states has now become a norm, that modern civilization culture is preferred more than Yoruba cultural heritage and language. These anomalies have caused the disintegration of the native cultural norms thereby putting the language on the verge of extinction in the nearest future which will eventually lead to another psychological and indirect slave trade. The aim of this research is to design and develop a knowledge base cultural traditional system user friendly interface information system for learning of the cultural tradition with the purpose of having a better understanding of the antiquities of the Yoruba cultural norms which will provide antidotes for the revival and restoration of the cultural norms. The iterative model approach was used to iterate the steps of the research progresses of the requirements and iterates the requirements, design, build and test phases again and again for each requirement until the system is completely built. The research coding was done using Microsoft visual studio c# environment, and for the database, MySQL used. -

[email protected] Abstract — In Civil Engineering construction The present and future states of any Civil all over the World, soil is indispensable as it forms Engineering structures lie majorly on the soil beneath foundation of everything. Thus there is need for its foundation. Most of the soils that are readily proper study / analysis of its properties especially available within our vicinity do not contain all the mechanical ones. This study is aimed at nutrients needed to make them suitable for some investigating the mechanical properties of some important Civil Engineering structures, hence they are Ekiti State soil. Soil samples collected from the being discarded. This usually results in seeking for study area were subjected to laboratory tests (i.e. expensive materials from far away burrow pit. At times, Grain Size Analysis and Atterberg Limits tests) in huge amount of money is used in stabilization process its untreated states. The results of the tests of the available soil in other to suit the construction carried out on the untreated soil samples purpose ([9]). indicated that Efon Alaaye, Gbonyin, Ido – Osi, It is hard to overlook the importance(s) of soil in Ijero and Oye LGAs soils were generally classified construction of structures and other aspect of Civil as Granular soil material with mainly Silty – Engineering practices. List of Community Banks Converted to Microfinance Banks As at 31St
CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA IMPORTANT NOTICE LIST OF COMMUNITY BANKS THAT HAVE SUCESSFULLY CONVERTED TO MICROFINANCE BANKS AS AT DECEMBER 31, 2007 Following the expiration of December 31, 2007 deadline for all existing community banks to re-capitalize to a minimum of N20 million shareholders’ fund, unimpaired by losses, and consequently convert to microfinance banks (MFB), it is imperative to publish the outcome of the conversion exercise for the guidance of the general public. Accordingly, the attached list represents 607 erstwhile community banks that have successfully converted to microfinance banks with either final licence or provisional approval. This list does not, however, include new investors that have been granted Final Licences or Approvals-In- Principle to operate as microfinance banks since the launch of Microfinance Policy on December 15, 2005. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) hereby states categorically that only the community banks on this list that have successfully converted to microfinance banks shall continue to be supervised by the CBN. Members of the public are hereby advised not to transact business with any community bank which is not on the list of these successfully converted microfinance banks. Any member of the public, who transacts business with any community bank that failed to convert to MFB does so at his/her own risk. Members of the public are also to note that the operating licences of community banks that failed to re-capitalize and consequently do not appear on this list, have automatically been revoked pursuant to Section 12 of BOFIA, 1991 (as amended). For the avoidance of the doubt, new applications either as a Unit or State Microfinance Banks from potential investors or promoters shall continue to be received and processed for licensing by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
