  • A Historical Survey of Socio-Political Administration in Akure Region up to the Contemporary Period
European Scientific Journal August edition vol. 8, No.18 ISSN: 1857 – 7881 (Print) e - ISSN 1857- 7431 A HISTORICAL SURVEY OF SOCIO-POLITICAL ADMINISTRATION IN AKURE REGION UP TO THE CONTEMPORARY PERIOD Afe, Adedayo Emmanuel, PhD Department of Historyand International Studies,AdekunleAjasin University,Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria Abstract Thepaper examines the political transformation of Akureregion from the earliest times to the present. The paper traces these stages of political development in order to demonstrate features associated with each stage. It argues further that pre-colonial Akure region, like other Yoruba regions, had a workable political system headed by a monarch. However, the Native Authority Ordinance of 1916, which brought about the establishment of the Native Courts and British judicial administration in the region led to the decline in the political power of the traditional institution.Even after independence, the traditional political institution has continually been subjugated. The work relies on both oral and written sources, which were critically examined. The paper, therefore, argues that even with its present political status in the contemporary Nigerian politics, the traditional political institution is still relevant to the development of thesociety. Keywords: Akure, Political, Social, Traditional and Authority Introduction The paper reviews the political administration ofAkure region from the earliest time to the present and examines the implication of the dynamics between the two periods may have for the future. Thus, assessment of the indigenous political administration, which was prevalent before the incursion of the colonial administration, the political administration during the colonial rule and the present political administration in the region are examined herein. However, Akure, in this context, comprises the present Akure North, Akure South, and Ifedore Local Government Areas of Ondo State, Nigeria.

However, there is a tendency for its quality to deviate from recommended standards as most groundwater sources are close to regions prone to erosion and most well are not usually covered. The tragedy is that the adverse effect might creep into the ecosystem and affects humanity if a regular check on the quality is not been made. The Geographical location and altitude of each well location were taken using Global Positioning System (GPS). The moderate PH range (6.30-7.36) can be linked to low values of TDS (352 mg/L) and EC (695 ms/cm) which are within the standard recommended for drinking- indicate a low concentration of salt contents. The relationship between the parameters shows a direct trend with the hydraulic head. Hence, groundwater sources (wells) in Abeokuta North Local Government are good for drinking.

Omolola4 1234Dept. of Computer Science & Info Technology, Bowen University, Iwo, Nigeria Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT In recent years researchers and experts have traditionally focused on how to enhance the look and functionality of how life issues are been tackled with respect to Africa cultural tradition for academic purposes and the development of cultural traditional system. Also, the discrimination between English and Yoruba language in the south west states has now become a norm, that modern civilization culture is preferred more than Yoruba cultural heritage and language. These anomalies have caused the disintegration of the native cultural norms thereby putting the language on the verge of extinction in the nearest future which will eventually lead to another psychological and indirect slave trade. The aim of this research is to design and develop a knowledge base cultural traditional system user friendly interface information system for learning of the cultural tradition with the purpose of having a better understanding of the antiquities of the Yoruba cultural norms which will provide antidotes for the revival and restoration of the cultural norms. The iterative model approach was used to iterate the steps of the research progresses of the requirements and iterates the requirements, design, build and test phases again and again for each requirement until the system is completely built. The research coding was done using Microsoft visual studio c# environment, and for the database, MySQL used.

  • Aduloju of Ado: a Nineteenth Century Ekiti Warlord

Across the length and breadth of Yorubaland, armies fought armies until 1886 when Sir Gilbert Carter, British Governor of the Lagos Protectorate, intervened to restore peace. Since men are generally the products of the times in which they live and the circumstances with which they are surrounded; men who live during the period of peace and tranquillity are most likely to learn how to promote and sustain peace while those who live in periods of turbulence and turmoil are most likely to learn and master the art of warfare. As wars raged and ravaged Yoruba nations and communities, prominent men emerged and built armies with which they defended their nations and aggrandised themselves. Men like Latosisa, Ajayi Ogboriefon and Ayorinde held out for Ibadan; Obe, Arimoro, Omole, Odo, Edidi, Fayise and Ogedengbe Agbogungboro for Ijesa; Karara for Ilorin; Ogundipe for Abeokuta; Ologun for Owo; Bakare for Afa; Ali for Iwo, Oderinde for Olupona, Onafowokan and Kuku for Ijebuode, Odu for Ogbagi; Adeyale for Ila; Olugbosun for Oye and Ogunbulu for Aisegba. Like other Yoruba nations and kingdoms, Ado Kingdom had its own prominent warlords.

Ability to afford a decent house is a critical aspect of human well-being. This study seeks to understand housing affordability among low-income earners in Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria. We conducted a survey that involves administering questionnaire to 100 randomly selected Akure residents who are employed in the junior category within public and private organisations. Most of the respondents – over 73% have monthly household income under N100,000. 81.3% of the respondents live in rented houses, while 13.3% owned where they lived. Being able to afford decent housing is a challenge as 90.7% of the respondents spent up to 25% of their total household income on rent. Majority (62.7%) agreed that their housing is not affordable, as paying rent affects spending for other household needs especially, children’s school fees and food.

  • The Artistic Heritage in the Deji of Akure's Palace
Structural Studies, Repairs and Maintenance of Heritage Architecture XIII 39 The artistic heritage in the Deji of Akure’s Palace J. Igbaro1 & T. Y. Akinbileje2 1Adeyemi College of Education, Nigeria 2Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria Abstract Traditional African society was replete with art in the living environment. This was widely manifested in the architecture of the people of South-western Nigeria. The art practice traverses generations with the influence of each generation reflected in the Deji of Akure’s Palace, which culminated in its being declared a National Monument in 1989, by the Nigerian Government. The thrust of this paper is to highlight the socio-cultural, economic as well as the aesthetic values of the artistic elements on the Palace building, as it reflects on the whole community. The Palace is a complex of multiple structures that reflect the cultural orientation of the Yoruba, who, though they guarded their culture and tradition jealously yet, were able to accommodate positive influence from other cultures and modern civilization. The purpose of this study is to x-ray the intrinsic and extrinsic values of art to the socio-cultural development of the community, as manifested in their architecture. It is discovered that different factors influenced the development of art in the architecture of Deji’s Palace; these include traditional symbols and foreign influences (particularly Christianity, industrial revolution, Afro-Brazilian freed slaves and modern developments). It concludes that the Deji’s Palace is a mirror the realities the community has been exposed to; hence, its declaration as a National Monument. Keywords: symbols, socio-cultural, traditional, motifs, decoration, indigenous, icons, linear, courtyard, house posts.
