S. & Gana A. J. Department of Civil Engineering College of Science and Engineering Landmark University Omu-Aran, Kwara State Email: [email protected], [email protected] Corresponding Author: Gana A. J. ABSTRACT Designing for pedestrians is a research work carried out as a result of the inadequate availability of pedestrian facilities resulting to increased accidents and other environmental and human hazards resulting from intermodal competitions for spaces vis-à-vis Highway capacity. This has helped to consider the possibility of pedestrian facilities for transportation in Taiwo road. The presence of pedestrian in Taiwo road has been investigated and found to be 538 per hour. In this research, Pedestrian facilities were designed for the Ibrahim Taiwo road in Ilorin city which is 3900m distance (from Taiwo salee junction to the end of the road at General Hospital roundabout). The design was done by carrying out pedestrian count on the Sidewalk and Crosswalk for the road in two hours for three days. The Sidewalk designed is 2.0m while the distance between the crosswalk markings is 0.6m and the thickness of the zebra crossing line is 0.6mat 3800m, 3200m 2150m, 650m and 200m from the origin of the road with 3m width, the Island height is 0.15m, the height of the signs above the ground is 2.0m and the Bus shelters are located at 3800m and 650m from the origin.

N. Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Imo State University, Owerri, Imo State Nigeria Email: [email protected]; [email protected] ABSTRACT The proximate and mineral composition of three varieties of mushroom consumed in Amaifeke, Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State were evaluated. The mushroom species include white button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus ), oyster mushroom ( Pleurotus ostreatus ), Crimini mushroom ( Agaricus bisporus ). The mushroom varieties were harvested and dried, then taken to the laboratory for proximate, mineral and vitamin analysis. Standard assay methods were used to analyze for proximate and mineral composition. Proximate composition of the mushroom was found to be in the range of 3.29 – 5.24% for moisture content, 8.60 – 22.60% for protein, 6.85 – 7.54% for fat, 7.94 – 18.63% for fibre, 2.99 – 4.74% for ash and 59.67 – 60.60% for carbohydrate. Six mineral elements were analysed: selenium, iron, zinc, iodine, potassium and copper, having values of 3.04 -6.56mg/100g, 1.532 – 2.378mg/100g, 2.70 – 3.90mg/100g, 0.348 – 0.425mg/100g, 0.8079 – 2.4615% and 0.586 – 0.784mg/100g respectively. Based on the result the mushroom have high nutrient potentials hence it will serve as a good means of reducing the incidence and high prevalence of malnutrition in Nigeria since it is a cheap food source that is within the reach of the poor.

  • On the Economic Origins of Constraints on Women's Sexuality
On the Economic Origins of Constraints on Women’s Sexuality Anke Becker* November 5, 2018 Abstract This paper studies the economic origins of customs aimed at constraining female sexuality, such as a particularly invasive form of female genital cutting, restrictions on women’s mobility, and norms about female sexual behavior. The analysis tests the anthropological theory that a particular form of pre-industrial economic pro- duction – subsisting on pastoralism – favored the adoption of such customs. Pas- toralism was characterized by heightened paternity uncertainty due to frequent and often extended periods of male absence from the settlement, implying larger payoffs to imposing constraints on women’s sexuality. Using within-country vari- ation across 500,000 women in 34 countries, the paper shows that women from historically more pastoral societies (i) are significantly more likely to have under- gone infibulation, the most invasive form of female genital cutting; (ii) are more restricted in their mobility, and hold more tolerant views towards domestic vio- lence as a sanctioning device for ignoring such constraints; and (iii) adhere to more restrictive norms about virginity and promiscuity. Instrumental variable es- timations that make use of the ecological determinants of pastoralism support a causal interpretation of the results. The paper further shows that the mechanism behind these patterns is indeed male absenteeism, rather than male dominance per se. JEL classification: I15, N30, Z13 Keywords: Infibulation; female sexuality; paternity uncertainty; cultural persistence. *Harvard University, Department of Economics and Department of Human Evolutionary Biology; [email protected]. 1 Introduction Customs, norms, and attitudes regarding the appropriate behavior and role of women in soci- ety vary widely across societies and individuals.

Food Science and Quality Management www.iiste.org ISSN 2224-6088 (Paper) ISSN 2225-0557 (Online) Vol.32, 2014 Antinutrient Profile of Three Mushroom Varieties Consumed in Amaifeke, Orlu, Imo State OLY-ALAWUBA, N. OBIAKOR - OKEKE, P. N. Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Faculty of Health Science Imo State University, Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria Email: [email protected] ; [email protected] Abstract Background: The importance of eliminating or minimizing antinutrients from foods human consume cannot be overemphasized. This study evaluated the antinutrient profile of three varieties of mushroom consumed in Amaifeke, Orlu, Imo State were determined. The mushroom species include white button mushroom ( Agaricus bisporus ), oyster mushroom ( Pleurotus ostreatus ), Crimini mushroom ( Agaricus bisporus ). Methods: The mushroom varieties were harvested and dried, after which, they were taken to the laboratory for chemical analysis. Standard assay methods were used to analyze for antinutrient composition. Result: Six anti-nutrients: hydrogen cyanide, saponin, phytate, oxalate, trypsin inhibitor and haemogglutinin were analysed and their values ranged from 0.198 – 0.236mg/g, 0.6656 – 1.001mg/g, 0.7794 -1.558mg/100g, 0.236 – 0.510%, 1.857 – 3.476TIµ/mg, 1.350 – 2.899Hµ/mg respectively. Conclusion: Based on the result of the study, it is important that these mushrooms be properly processed so that the nutrients in them will not be rendered inaccessible by the body due to the presence of these antinutrients. Keywords: Antinutrient, Mushroom, Consumed, Amaifeke Introduction Antinutrients are natural or synthetic compounds that interfere with the absorption of nutrients (1). Plant foods may contain significant amounts of toxic or antinutritional substances, legumes are particularly rich source of natural toxicants including protease inhibitors, amylase inhibitors, metal chelates, flatus factors, hemagglutinins, saponins, cyanogens, lathyrogens, tannins, allergens, acetylenic furan and isoflavonoidphytoalexins (2).
