A Study of Awka Metropolis Anambra State, Nigeria

International Journal of Business and Social Science Vol. 7, No. 5; May 2016 Urban Poverty Incidence in Nigeria: A Study of Awka Metropolis Anambra State, Nigeria Mbah, Stella I., Ph.D Department of Business Administration Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Igbariam, Anambra State Nigeria Mgbemena, Gabriel C. Department of Business Administration Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Igbariam, Anambra State Nigeria Ejike, Daniel C. Department of Business Administration Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Igbariam, Anambra State Nigeria Abstract This study examined poverty situation in Awka metropolis of Anambra State, Nigeria, using the P-alpha class of poverty measure. To achieve this objective, a structured questionnaire was administered to 399 heads of households selected from mixed socio-economic backgrounds. The study revealed that 49 percent of the respondents were considered to be poor, with 0.17 poverty gap index and a 0.03 severity of poverty index. However, the indicators were considered to be modest when compared with the national rates. The causes of poverty in Awka metropolis include: lack or inadequate supply of some identified basic necessities of life such as shelter, potable water, and sanitation, basic healthcare services, electricity and educational services. As a result of these inadequacies, there are psychological distress, increase in destitution, child labour, violent crime, and prostitution. It was therefore recommended among others that government should step up public investment in urban infrastructure, provision of credit facilities, involvement of the people in development decision that affects their lives or participatory budgetary process and most especially, good governance at the municipal level with accountability and transparency to stamp out corrupt tendencies which has inhibited past developmental efforts of the government.

SIGNIFICANCE of ANIMAL MOTIFS in INDIGENOUS ULI BODY and WALL PAINTINGS Nkiruka Jane Uju Nwafor Department of Fine and Applied A

Mgbakoigba, Journal of African Studies. Vol. 8, No. 1. June 2019 SIGNIFICANCE OF ANIMAL MOTIFS IN INDIGENOUS ULI BODY AND WALL PAINTINGS… Nkiruka Jane Uju Nwafor SIGNIFICANCE OF ANIMAL MOTIFS IN INDIGENOUS ULI BODY AND WALL PAINTINGS Nkiruka Jane Uju Nwafor Department of Fine and Applied Arts Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. [email protected] This article explores the significance of animal motifs in traditional Uli body and wall paintings. A critical assessment and understanding of the philosophical import of animals in African concept of existence is vital for an in-depth appreciation of their (animals’) symbols in indigenous African artworks. This paper attempts to a draw parallel between traditional beliefs concerning certain animals among the Igbo of south-eastern Nigeria and motifs derived from indigenous Uli body and wall painting. In essence, the article sees animal motifs in Uli body and wall paintings as playing an aesthetic as well as metaphysical roles. Hence I argue that local nuances of religiosity and spirituality have historically imbued the animals with a heightened sense of sacredness in some Igbo communities thus allowing the animals to occupy a mystical space in Igbo cosmology. Introduction The pre-colonial system of knowledge transmission in Africa was not only through oral literature but also through the varied artistic traditions that survived from one generation to the other. The rich heritage of ancient Egyptian arts (including the hieroglyphs), the numerous Neolithic rock paintings and engravings found in Northern Africa, which dates back to 5000 and 2000 BCE respectively were mainly symbolic of vital occurrences of the past, documented through art (Getlein 2002: 335).

The water budget implications for soil and gully erosion were evaluated in relation to the geological formations and hydrogeotechnics. Results show that rainfall constitutes the main source of precipitation. It ranges from 1714.04mm to 1995.53mm annually. The potential groundwater aquifer volume is 1.5 X 107m3. Discharge from aquifers contributes 7.4 X 107m3 water annually. The amount of 1.72 X 105m3 that is 60% of precipitation is lost to evaporation; 17 to 21% to infiltration. The quasi steady state of the lake water level and volume shows surface and groundwater continuity as explained by the small difference between total input and output values of the computed water budget of the lake and the aquifer. Flood studies indicate that 19.5% of the annual precipitation constitutes runoff, the main agent of gully and soil erosion, flooding and landslides. The other factors that control the distribution and location of gullies are lithologic and stratigraphical, while topography/geomorphology controls gully distribution within various geologic units. A typical gully is about 500m X 50m X 30m long, wide and deep respectively.

This function becomes more critical in this period of economic recession in Nigeria. This study sought and established the extent of the School-Based Management Committees’ promotion of accountability and proper utilization of physical resources in the public secondary schools in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State. The survey research method was adopted. Two (2) research questions guided the study, while two (2) hypotheses were tested at 0.05 significance level. The population of the study was 362; comprising 330 teachers, 16 community leaders and 16 principals, from which a sample of 236 (220 teachers, 8 principals and 8 community leaders) was drawn through simple random sampling technique. A 10- item Questionnaire, duly validated was used for collection of data. Data collected were analysed using mean score to answer the research questions and ANOVA to test the hypotheses. The study established among other things, that the SBMCs in Anaocha Local Government Area to a low extent contribute to ensuring proper utilization of physical resources, but to a high extent promote financial accountability in the use of school financial resources.

The study area lies within longitudes 06° 38I and 007° 15IE and latitudes 05°42I and 006°45IN within an area extent of about 4844sqkm (1870sqmi), underlain by four main geological formations. Pump testing was carried out in over one hundred (100) locations in the study area. The single-well test approach was used, employing the constant discharge and recovery methods. The Cooper-Jacob’s straight-line method was used to analyze the pump test results. This enabled the computing of the aquifer hydraulic properties. Correlated borehole logs show total depth range of 80meters to 250meters, with lithologic sequence of top sandy clay – medium to coarse grained sand – clay/shale – sand/sandstone, with the medium to coarse grained sand thickly underlying the central part of the study area. Static water level ranges from 100meters to 260meters at the central part and 10meters to 90meters at the adjoining areas. Aquifer transmissivity values range from 5m2/day to 80m2/day, indicating variable transmissivity potentials, while hydraulic conductivity values range from 0.5m/day to 6.0m/day.

Father Vincent NWOSU ABSTRACT Recent studies in African church historiography have increasingly shown that the generally acknowledged successful planting of Christian Churches in parts of Africa, especially the East and West, from the nineteenth century was not entirely the work of foreign missionaries alone. Africans themselves participated actively in p la n tin g , sustaining and propagating the faith. These Africans can clearly be grouped into two: first, those who were ordained ministers of the church, and secondly, the lay members.

1.1 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Soil erosion is the systematic removal of soil, including plant nutrients, from the land surface by various agents of denudation (Ofomata, 1985). Water being the dominant agent of denudation initiates erosion by rain splash impact, drag and tractive force acting on individual particles of the surface soil. These are consequently transported seizing slope advantage for deposition elsewhere. Soil erosion is generally created by initial incision into the subsurface by concentrated runoff water along lines or zones of weakness such as tension and desiccation fractures. As these deepen, the sides give in or slide with the erosion of the side walls forming gullies. During the Stone Age, soil erosion was counted as a blessing because it unearths valuable treasures which lie hidden below the earth strata like gold, diamond and archaeological remains. Today, soil erosion has become an endemic global problem, In the South eastern Nigeria, mostly in Anambra State, it is an age long one that has attained a catastrophic dimension. This environmental hazard, because of the striking imprints on the landscape, has sparked off serious attention of researchers and government organisations for sometime now. Grove(1951); Carter(1958); Floyd(1965); Ofomata (1964,1965,1967,1973,and 1981); all made significant and refreshing contributions on the processes and measures to combat soil erosion. Gully Erosion is however the prominent feature in the landscape of Anambra State. The topography of the area as well as the nature of the soil contributes to speedy formation and spreading of gullies in the area (Ofomata, 2000);. 1.2 Erosion Types There are various types of erosion which occur these include Soil Erosion Rill Erosion Gully Erosion Sheet Erosion 1.2.1 Soil Erosion: This has been occurring for some 450 million years, since the first land plants formed the first soil.

List of Community Banks Converted to Microfinance Banks As at 31St

CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA IMPORTANT NOTICE LIST OF COMMUNITY BANKS THAT HAVE SUCESSFULLY CONVERTED TO MICROFINANCE BANKS AS AT DECEMBER 31, 2007 Following the expiration of December 31, 2007 deadline for all existing community banks to re-capitalize to a minimum of N20 million shareholders’ fund, unimpaired by losses, and consequently convert to microfinance banks (MFB), it is imperative to publish the outcome of the conversion exercise for the guidance of the general public. Accordingly, the attached list represents 607 erstwhile community banks that have successfully converted to microfinance banks with either final licence or provisional approval. This list does not, however, include new investors that have been granted Final Licences or Approvals-In- Principle to operate as microfinance banks since the launch of Microfinance Policy on December 15, 2005. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) hereby states categorically that only the community banks on this list that have successfully converted to microfinance banks shall continue to be supervised by the CBN. Members of the public are hereby advised not to transact business with any community bank which is not on the list of these successfully converted microfinance banks. Any member of the public, who transacts business with any community bank that failed to convert to MFB does so at his/her own risk. Members of the public are also to note that the operating licences of community banks that failed to re-capitalize and consequently do not appear on this list, have automatically been revoked pursuant to Section 12 of BOFIA, 1991 (as amended). For the avoidance of the doubt, new applications either as a Unit or State Microfinance Banks from potential investors or promoters shall continue to be received and processed for licensing by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
