Abstract The incessant failure of road network in Nigeria has generated a lot of concern by road users and government. Apart from lives and properties that are lost annually to road crashes, road rehabilitation across the country has become a financial burden to the federal government. Several factors have been identified to be responsible to road failure in Nigeria; they include geological, geomorphological, road usage, bad construction and wrong approach to maintenance. Hence, this paper examines some of the factors responsible for road failure along Ilorin-Ajase Ipo road, Kwara State Nigeria. Soil samples were collected from Five (5) portions of the road that are badly affected by road failure. These portions include: Agricultural and Rural Management Training Institute (ARMTI) 17+800km, Kabba Owode 18+00Km, Idofian 23+700Km, Koko 29+700Km and Omupo 35+700Km axis. The soil samples collected were analyzed four engineering properties: particle size distribution (PSD),atterberg limit, compaction test California Bearing Ratio (CBR). -

Ethiopian Journal of Environmental Studies and Management EJESM Vol. 5 no.4 (Suppl.2) 2012 IMPLICATIONS OF COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE PROVISION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MEDIUM-SIZED TOWNS IN KWARA STATE NIGERIA ADEDAYO, A. and *AFOLAYAN, G.P. http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/ejesm.v5i4.S23 Received 20th September 2012; accepted 1st November 2012 Abstract Infrastructure has been recognized as the crux of human settlement development. This paper therefore examines the implications of community provision of infrastructure in the development of medium – sized towns in Nigeria. Medium-sized towns are settlements with population size of between 5,000 and 20,000. Data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. The findings generally revealed a high level of community participation in the provision of such infrastructure as schools, electricity, roads, water, market stalls, health facilities, and town halls. However, variations exist among the medium – sized towns in the type and number of infrastructure provided by community action. Kendall’s Coefficient Concordance (W) used to test the degree of variations in ranks revealed a significant agreement in the ranking. Hierarchical Cluster Analysis used to classify the medium – sized towns based on infrastructure provision produced three classes. The general implication of this study is that, infrastructure provision by community action can lead to a balanced regional development as other smaller towns around the study emulate the action. Recognizing the role of small – sized towns in a balanced regional development process, government should encourage the people through the provision of financial support, machineries and technical know-how in the provision of infrastructure. This paper recommends the integration of community development plans with those of the local government towards achieving even development. -

It plays an intrinsic role in almost all segments of the people‟s cultural life. In the Ọjị Ezinihitte festivity the „kola tradition‟ is meaningfully and elaborately celebrated. This article examines the importance of Ọjị within the context of Ezinihitte socio-cultural heritage, and equally accounts for continuity and change within it. An eclectic framework in data collection was utilized for this research. This involved the use of key-informant interviews, direct observation as well as extant textual sources (both published and un-published), including archival documents, for the purposes of the study. In terms of analysis, the study utilized the qualitative analytical approach. This was employed towards ensuring that the three basic purposes of this study – exploration, description and explanation – are well articulated and attained. The paper provided background for a proper understanding of the „sacred origin‟ of the Ọjị festive celebration. Through a vivid account of the festival‟s processes and rituals, it achieved a reconstruction of the festivity‟s origins and evolutionary trajectories and argues the festival as reflecting the people‟s spirit of fraternity and conviviality. -

The study identified most of all the known rivers in Imo State and provided information like relief, topography and other geographical features of the major rivers which are crucial to aid water management for a sustainable water infrastructure in the communities of the watershed. The rivers and lakes are classified into five watersheds (river basins) such as Okigwe watershed, Mbaise / Mbano watershed, Orlu watershed, Oguta watershed and finally, Owerri watershed. The knowledge of the river basins in Imo State will help analyze the problems involved in water resources allocation and to provide guidance for the planning and management of water resources in the state for sustainable development. On the Economic Origins of Constraints on Women’s Sexuality Anke Becker* November 5, 2018 Abstract This paper studies the economic origins of customs aimed at constraining female sexuality, such as a particularly invasive form of female genital cutting, restrictions on women’s mobility, and norms about female sexual behavior. The analysis tests the anthropological theory that a particular form of pre-industrial economic pro- duction – subsisting on pastoralism – favored the adoption of such customs. Pas- toralism was characterized by heightened paternity uncertainty due to frequent and often extended periods of male absence from the settlement, implying larger payoffs to imposing constraints on women’s sexuality. Using within-country vari- ation across 500,000 women in 34 countries, the paper shows that women from historically more pastoral societies (i) are significantly more likely to have under- gone infibulation, the most invasive form of female genital cutting; (ii) are more restricted in their mobility, and hold more tolerant views towards domestic vio- lence as a sanctioning device for ignoring such constraints; and (iii) adhere to more restrictive norms about virginity and promiscuity. Instrumental variable es- timations that make use of the ecological determinants of pastoralism support a causal interpretation of the results. The paper further shows that the mechanism behind these patterns is indeed male absenteeism, rather than male dominance per se. With the largest population in Africa that can sustain domestic tourism, and many cultures which reflect in food and environment Nigeria is at advantage to attract both local and international tourists and therefore derive significant benefits for national development. However, the ecotourism resources of Nigeria are not packaged and promoted. Tourism in Nigeria is faced with numerous challenges: the biodiversity components are under serious threat; high rate of poaching and habitat destruction; lack of infrastructures; sabotage; poor global image; high level of insecurity; lack of awareness about tourism and conservation; poor tourism culture; insufficient facilities in eco-destination; poverty; corruption; underfunding; poor motivation of rangers; harassment by security personnel; poor road network and consistent traffic jam and poor maintenance culture amongst others. The tourism attractions in Nigeria when developed, properly packaged and promoted can satisfy the curiosity of almost every kind of tourists; and this will bring about increased benefits such as massive employment, increased revenue generation, local empowerment, foreign exchange earnings, creation of market for local product and development of infrastructures. -
