  • Latin Derivatives Dictionary
Dedication: 3/15/05 I dedicate this collection to my friends Orville and Evelyn Brynelson and my parents George and Marion Greenwald. I especially thank James Steckel, Barbara Zbikowski, Gustavo Betancourt, and Joshua Ellis, colleagues and computer experts extraordinaire, for their invaluable assistance. Kathy Hart, MUHS librarian, was most helpful in suggesting sources. I further thank Gaylan DuBose, Ed Long, Hugh Himwich, Susan Schearer, Gardy Warren, and Kaye Warren for their encouragement and advice. My former students and now Classics professors Daniel Curley and Anthony Hollingsworth also deserve mention for their advice, assistance, and friendship. My student Michael Kocorowski encouraged and provoked me into beginning this dictionary. Certamen players Michael Fleisch, James Ruel, Jeff Tudor, and Ryan Thom were inspirations. Sue Smith provided advice. James Radtke, James Beaudoin, Richard Hallberg, Sylvester Kreilein, and James Wilkinson assisted with words from modern foreign languages. Without the advice of these and many others this dictionary could not have been compiled. Lastly I thank all my colleagues and students at Marquette University High School who have made my teaching career a joy. Basic sources: American College Dictionary (ACD) American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (AHD) Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology (ODEE) Oxford English Dictionary (OCD) Webster’s International Dictionary (eds. 2, 3) (W2, W3) Liddell and Scott (LS) Lewis and Short (LS) Oxford Latin Dictionary (OLD) Schaffer: Greek Derivative Dictionary, Latin Derivative Dictionary In addition many other sources were consulted; numerous etymology texts and readers were helpful. Zeno’s Word Frequency guide assisted in determining the relative importance of words. However, all judgments (and errors) are finally mine.

Charles Armstrong 24 October 2012 Linguistics Research Thesis Advisor: Prof. Aaron Dinkin Vox Evocative: Pinpointing a possible sociological strategy for the typing of the phonatory and articulatory features of a singing genre Introduction The human singing voice. Discrepancies in the quantification and description of the work of our vocal cords offer a seemingly eternal source of academic discord. Despite the ubiquity of familiarity with singing voices, scientists and listeners alike seem to still perpetuate these massive discrepancies over the shared experience of listening to singing voices. One might expect a phenomenon almost as accessible as observing the blueness of the sky to have a consensual academic explanation. However, despite the amount of attention paid to the phenomenon of human singing by scientists and listeners around the world, much discordance and attention remains over how to describe and quantify this experience. Maybe this aforementioned academic conflict over quantitative and qualitative evaluations of the singing voice owes to the sheer acoustic diversity of human singing voices. If singing voices and styles were more homogenous objective entities, maybe the work of voice scientists and critical listeners would be simpler. Works of science fiction, even popular cartoons like Dexter's Laboratory and Family Guy, beg the comparison of voice scans to fingerprints. Just like the right voice evokes a response in these fictitious scanning machines, certain vocal qualities tend to evoke certain evaluations by humans. The ubiquity of references such as the ones from the described cartoons makes a case for the existence of a common latent acceptance of the unique and evocative qualities of the human voice.

Committee Chair signature: Melinda Boyd A Dozen Little Farinellos: A Reception History of Farinelli in London, 1734-37 A Thesis Submitted to the Division of Graduate Studies and Research of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music in the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music 2009 By Ashley Offret B. M., University of Maine, 2005 Committee Chair: Dr. Melinda Boyd ABSTRACT Farinelli’s arrival in London in 1734 to perform with the Opera of the Nobility marked a temporary rise in the declining popularity of Italian Opera in England. The previous few decades had seen Italian opera overwhelmingly successful under the baton of Georg Frederic Handel, despite frequent and constant complaints by critics. This thesis will reconstruct Farinelli’s reception history through an examination of contemporary literature. First, it will examine Farinelli’s irresistibility as a sexual icon by reconstructing London’s ideas about femininity, while taking into account his unique traits that attracted him to both males and females.

PROPERTY OF TENSTRINGS MUSIC INSTITUTE NIGERIA – www.tenstrings.org PROPERTY OF TENSTRINGS MUSIC INSTITUTE NIGERIA – www.tenstrings.org PROPERTY OF TENSTRINGS MUSIC INSTITUTE NIGERIA – www.tenstrings.org Knowing Your Voice Perhaps, one might be right to say the human voice is the single most important sound producer in the world. It is the oldest and most versatile musical instrument, and it is readily accessible by every human being. Although the voice is available to everybody, not all can use it professionally. The first thing to grasp in your pursuit of a better singing voice should be a fair knowledge of how your voice works, and then you can proceed to developing it. How the Voice Works When you want to speak or sing, you breathe out, and the breath travels upwards to your larynx, located in the throat (in the area behind the 'Adam's apple'). The larynx is located at the top of the windpipe. The larynx is bigger in males than it is in females, which attributes to the deeper voice in males. You can feel your larynx vibrating by placing your hand on your throat and humming. When you're not speaking the air passes through without any obstruction. But when you speak, the vocal cords are brought close together by tiny muscles in the larynx. When the air hits these vocal folds it makes them vibrate. At this stage, the 'voice' is just a buzz, which is then amplified by the resonating cavities in your mouth and upper throat. This sound is further enhanced by vibration in the bones of your skull and other parts of the body (this is why, if you are ill with a head cold or a sore throat, your voice often sounds different than usual).

  • A Countertenor Aria Collection Continuum for Studio Training And
A COUNTERTENOR ARIA COLLECTION CONTINUUM FOR STUDIO TRAINING AND PERFORMANCE David T. Stanley Dissertation Prepared for the Degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS August 201 8 APPROVED: Jeffrey Snider, Major Professor Stephen Austin, Committee Member Stephen Morscheck, Committee Member Molly Fillmore, Chair of the Division of Vocal Studies Benjamin Brand, Director of Graduate Studies in the College of Music John W. Richmond, Dean of the College of Music Victor Prybutok, Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Stanley, David T. A Countertenor Aria Collection Continuum for Studio Training and Performance. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), August 2018, 53 pp., 16 tables, 4 musical examples, bibliography, 64 titles. An assessment of the standard voice instructor or performer collection of printed music would likely reveal numerous operatic repertoire volumes in anthology format appropriated to the primary four voice categories. However, thorough investigation divulges little in comparable printed material accessible to the countertenor. This scarcity of systemized collections is especially evident in the territory of comprehensive countertenor operatic repertoire. This project fills that present void by creating a compilation of sixteen countertenor arias drawn from various styles and historical periods for suggested application in studio instruction and performance. Perhaps, a more meaningful project intent is the presentation of a beneficial graded literature continuum resource for the studio teacher who instructs a countertenor in various stages of vocal development. For this purpose, each of the 16 arias is categorized into four difficulty levels based on considerations of range, tessitura, coloratura demands, rhythm, sustained phrase length, tonality, melodic considerations/overall musical difficulty, accompaniment support, and ornamentation requirements.

AJthough Sancho earns no biographical entry in The New Grove, E. L. Gerber's Neues historisch-biographisches lexikon der Ton künstler, Vierter The1/. S.-Z. (Leipzig: A. Kühnel, 1814), 15, gave him a 13-line article stating that he wrote a Theorie der Musik.' Unfortunately, this theory text seems Jost. On the other hand, he identified Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges (1739-1799), as racially ein Mulatte (Neues historisch-biographisches Lexikon, Zweyter Theil E.-1. (1812), 290). Dominique-René de Lerma, in "The Chevalier de Saint-Georges," The Block Per spective in Music, 1v / J (Spring 1976), 3-21, cited the chevalier's father as Joseph Jean-Nicholas Boulogne from France, where he had been in the parlement at Metz before assignment to Guadeloupe island as comptroller and secretary to the Ordre de Saint-Esprit.
