Major Specialisation and its Air Force Military Leadership (145 ECTS) Volume Within the Curriculum Specialisation Within the Air Operations, Airfield or Air Surveillance specialty (35 Curriculum ECTS) 1/48 Objectives of the Curriculum The aim of the this curriculum is to prepare basic junior officers for service in peacetime and wartime within the radar post, flights or squadrons in the Estonian Air Force subunits. It has been compiled considering the work environment and functions that an officer should perform creatively as part of his/her job - those of a leader, educator and technician. The curriculum enables specialisation in air operations, airfield and air surveillance specialties. Outcomes of the Curriculum After completion of this curriculum the student: 1) Knows the tasks of the Air Force and the working principles of its subunits and understands the principles of cooperation within Air Force and between services; 2) Is able to consider the cooperation principles between the Air Force, civil aviation and NATO Air Defence System when performing his/her service duties; 3) Knows the concepts, equipment and methods of his/her specialisation and is able to use them in a purposeful manner when performing his/her service duties; 4) Is capable of leading an infantry platoon-sized unit in wartime conditions; 5) Has acquired the required knowledge and skills for executing and evaluating the training of a unit; 6) By taking societal and ethical questions into account, is able to assess his or her role and the consequences on society of his or her actions as a military leader; 7) Knows the different scientific concepts and regularities related to the field of military and their potential applications of different scientific and technological developments in warfare; 8) Is able to understand and explain the issues related to his or her work in Estonian and in at least one foreign language in written and oral form; 9) Is capable of choosing appropriate methods and means for fulfilling his or her duties by collecting information independently, interpreting it creatively and critically and formulating the results into research work as required; 10) Is able to continue his or her studies and personal development independently. Rank Awarded Upon Second Lieutenant Graduation 2/48 Short Description of the The curriculum consists of the following Curriculum modules: - general leadership module (30-33 ECTS); - military leadership module (48-51 ECTS); - technology module (40-43 ECTS); - pedagogy and research module (24-27 ECTS); - specialisation module (35 ECTS). Completion of the Curriculum Completion of all modules and subjects listed in the curriculum is obligatory for regular full-time students. Subjects are completed according to the progression of subjects as prescribed by the EMA. Specialisation modules are made available based on the needs of the Estonian Defence Forces. External or visiting students complete the modules and/or subjects in the manner prescribed by the EMA (passing prerequisite subjects, following the limitations to participating in studies according to the Defence Forces Service Act). The studies after the completion of the curriculum are provided with regard to the person’s eligibility for active service fulfilling the post of a basic officer. Graduation Requirements In order to complete the entire curriculum a student must pass subjects up to a total of 170 ECTS and defend a final paper valued at 10 ECTS. After completion of the module the students will form an understanding of society in the modern security environment, of the role of the defence structures and members of the defence forces in democratic society, state principles based on the rule of law, national security policy, and the areas of the air force and military as a whole.
