“Don't always walk on the smooth roads, walk ways that no one has travelled before, so as to leave behind traces and not only dust…”

The quote by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900-1944) reflects – in the figurative sense – all that for which we stand with this project.

It is our intention not to leave any traces in nature during this expedition. Instead, we rather want to leave our mark in contemporary history. It’ll take every individual participant in this project – from all ages and classes of society – to accomplish this. Working together, collaborators and helpers in 20 countries and on 3 continents will be successful in writing history. The success of the projects depends on each and every one.

If we are successful in mastering this particularity, then we’ll have accomplished the greatest goal of the expedition.

During the performance of the project, Extrem Events – Matthias Jeschke e.K., every participant as well as every employee of the project promises to respect the religious, political and cultural conventions and customs of the individual country and its inhabitants. All persons involved will refrain from any actions which might compromise the before mentioned concerns - of each and every inhabitant of the individual country - that are worthy of protection.

Achieving a CO 2-Neutral Project Balance

Spectacular Renewable Energies Project

First Drive around the World on Wheels

Using Renewable Energy Resources

Around the World without a Trace

CO 2-Neutrality and Renewable Energies in the Focus of the International Media

. This is one of the greatest challenges since the invention of the automobile and has yet to be successfully accomplished by anyone.

To promote worldwide CO 2-neutrality, the use of renewable energies as well as energy efficiency, an international team will set out to drive around the world over land exclusively by car for the first time ever, following in the traces of early human migration.

Accompanied by a banner exhibition on the above mentioned topics the historic tour will lead this team across , Russia, Mongolia, Alaska, Canada and the USA, crossing 20 countries in total. It is the objective to put the focus on the individual activities to minimize the

CO 2-emissions of each country, our partners and our project by achieving a maximum public awareness.

Without a trace and CO 2-neutral

In order to not leave any traces and still make history, the expedition “Paris / New

York – Transcontinental 2009” will take place in winter and CO 2-neutral.

In the effort to leave the environment intact on this stretch of almost 43,000 kilometers, the project management has committed itself to take the following actions:

• Timing: In order to avoid leaving tire tracks in nature, the tour will take place in winter. The vehicles will only cross meter deep snow and ice as well as deep-frozen soil, known as permafrost. • Among others, low-emission bio fuel and bio oil on the basis of renewable / sustainable and readily biodegradable energy resources will be used for the engines, axles and the transmissions.

• Throughout the entire project, the CO 2-level will be closely monitored. To neutralize

the CO 2-output occurring during the project it will be subsequently planted an appropriate number of trees in close collaboration with the state authorities, following the round-the-world tour. This will ensure that the tour actually contributes to reducing

CO 2-emissions. • The expedition will only use state-of-the-art vehicles and equipment.

Support by politics

Both, prior and – in particular – during the expedition, the project will depend on the close co- operation with all of the involved countries, their ministries, associations, governmental departments and their Chambers of Commerce, all in the effort to successfully communicate the project’s statements and goals of this historic tour. The project is supported by the German Foreign Office and all the German embassies involved in this tour.

An extreme project for drivers – both historical and historic

An international team of drivers will start in Paris on October 1, 2008, and is estimated to reach New York by the middle of May 2009. They will venture east through Russia up to the outermost edge of Eurasia and thus try to be the first team to ever reach the Bering Strait with wheel-driven vehicles of their own accord. Then, in February 2009, it is planned to cross

©Extrem Events - Matthias Jeschke

the Bering Strait by driving over ice. Considering that the strait has not been completely frozen for years, a swimming system will be in use for security. In the case that the vehicles break through the ice or in case of open expanses of water, the swimming system will bring them to the next accessible sheet of ice. Upon arriving on the American continent, the third challenge will be waiting for the team. The participants of the expedition have set themselves the goal - which has never been achieved before - to drive from Wales to Fairbanks and reach it of their own accord with wheel-driven vehicles. Continuing its journey from Fairbanks, the team will cross Canada, drive through the USA from west to east and finally reach New York.

By then the Extrem Events team will have achieved three absolutely historical performances:

• Reaching Uelen / Russia of their own accord by wheel-driven vehicles • Crossing of the Bering Strait • First drive from Wales / Alaska to Fairbanks / Alaska along the northern coast

The goals of this expedition are to promote CO 2-neutral project balance, the worldwide use of renewable energies and energy efficiency. The team will drive around the world using only one mean of transportation.

The Banner Exhibitions

In an effort to direct the focus especially to country-specific “Renewable-Energy-Projects”, it is possible to stop by renewable energy-projects in Europe, Canada and the USA. The expedition will be accompanied by a banner-exhibition on the topic of “CO 2-reduction”, “energy-efficiency” and “sustainability” and can be presented—in cooperation with governmental and/or economical partners of the individual countries as well as the German Embassies—on many occasions.

By extension, country-specific projects and companies are given the opportunity to use these exhibitions for presentations and the like. It is a travelling exhibition which will be shown in all 20 countries involved in this project.

The Potentials

In regards to the project statements around the topic of “CO 2-neutral project balances”, “renewable energies” and “energy efficiency” we understand the project „Paris / New York – Transcontinental 2009” to be instrumental in achieving a maximum effect on the public in a most spectacular way.

Every public event or press conference in each of the 20 countries is an ideal opportunity for country-specific presentations regarding “renewable energies” or energy-efficient projects. Taking into consideration the involvement of the press and the effects on the public, these projects can thus be introduced to a broad international audience throughout the course of the „Paris / New York – Transcontinental 2009“. Furthermore, the co-operation with the 20 countries and their governmental and non-governmental institutions presents an enormous potential for the exchange of information as well as the possible formation of a new cooperation here and there.

The Political Support

With its particular orientation and organization, the “ Paris / New York – Transcontinental 2009“- Expedition supports the goals of the German Foreign Office’s Environmental Department.

To further underline these goals of German environ- mental policy, the Foreign Office has agreed to support this project together with the various German embassies.

The Academical Partner

32 country coordinators of the International University will assist in clearing the historic path around the world based on their practical research study. Accompanying the tour academically, the University will function as an important link between the co-ordination of the project leadership, the economic enterprises, and politics, thus further ensuring the success of this expedition.

The Media Presence & Journey for Accompanying Journalist Group

The expedition will be accompanied by several film crews in order to draw up a TV- documentary, which will be broadcasted worldwide. Moreover, national and international TV- correspondence as well as press conferences in many places will ensure extensive media coverage. In addition, the project management is currently in the process of organizing an accompanying journey for group of journalists comprised of representatives of each country. These journalists will have the unique opportunity to immediately and vividly experience this expedition and then share their experiences through their respective publications.
