T TABOUT US T Founded in 1904, the Schulich School of Music of McGill University is home to a diverse community of performers, composers, music theorists, educators, scientists, and researchers, and offers more than 45 undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. In 2018, 513 undergraduate and 375 graduate students were enrolled at Schulich, with a third of that total coming from outside of Canada. Created by the Parliament of Canada as a Centennial project during the 1960s, the NAC has become Canada’s foremost showcase for the performing arts. Today, the NAC works with thousands of artists from across Canada and around the world, and collaborates with dozens of arts organizations across the country. The NAC is strongly committed to being a leader and innovator in each of the performing arts fields in which it works – classical music, English theatre, French theatre, dance, variety and community programming. It is also at the forefront of youth and education activities; supporting programmes for young and emerging artists, presenting programs for young audiences, and producing resources and study materials for teachers and students. The NAC is the only multidisciplinary, bilingual performing arts centre in North America, and one of the largest in the world. ACCOUNTABILITY AND FUNDING The NAC reports to Parliament through the Minister of Canadian Heritage. Of the NAC’s total revenue, approximately half is derived from an annual parliamentary appropriation, while the other half comes from earned revenue – box office sales, the NAC Foundation, NAC catering, Le Café (restaurant), commercial parking and facility rentals. Each year, the NAC tables an annual report before Parliament. The Auditor General of Canada is the NAC’s external auditor. -

Six awards honouring the accomplishments of Newfoundland and Labrador’s artists were presented, as well as the 2017 Lawrence Jackson Writers’ Award - a special addition to the gala for this year only, which went to a Labrador resident, Alex Saunders. Mot du directeur artistique Le mandat artistique de l’organisme Ensemble Paramirabo est de se présenter comme une voix pour la diffusion de la musique d’aujourd’hui et pour la promotion des compositeurs émergents. Ses membres travaillent de façon à faciliter l’accessibilité et la compréhension de la musique contemporaine auprès de tous les publics et de tous les milieux et se consacrent à la redynamisation du concert grâce à une programmation inédite. L’organisme ne se limite pas à un répertoire strict. Il touche autant à des œuvres de répertoire qu’à la musique actuelle qu’elle soit écrite, improvisée ou électroacoustique. Il fait appel à des musiciens et des artistes de la relève montréalaise afin de concrétiser ses projets et de combler les postes dus aux exigences instrumentales des œuvres présentées. La programmation reflète ce désir d’élargir les horizons et les expériences des auditeurs de nos concerts en favorisant la nouveauté, l’expérimentation et le risque. Nous avons un penchant pour les programmes qui tournent autour d’un thème ou qui offrent plusieurs points de vue divergents sur un même concept. Nous aimons également présenter des projets en collaborations avec des artistes issus d’autres domaines d’art qui amènent de nouvelles explorations et découvertes, citons en exemple les programmes cabarets ou théâtrales tel que nos productions THE CRAZIES! ou À chaque ventre son monstre (gagnant du Prix Opus - Création de l’année 2018). Dans les dernières années, nous avons fait un effort majeur pour créer des projets artistiques qui agissent comme un pont culturel avec des milieux différents. -

He writes music for the concert stage, electronic music, music for robotic instruments, as well as music for video, theater, and dance. Described as “gripping” and “engrossing” by the New York Times, Brook’s compositions have been performed around the world by ensembles and soloists such as the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Quatuor Bozzini, JACK Quartet, Mivos Quartet, Talea Ensemble, Ensemble Ascolta, and others. He has won numerous SOCAN Young Composers awards, including two first-place prizes and the grand prize in 2016 for Song, for solo cello. Brook studied composition with Brian Cherney in Montreal, Luc Brewaeys in Brussels, and George Lewis and Georg Haas in New York. In 2008, he studied Hindustani music and performance with Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya in Kolkata. His music is often concerned with finely tuned microtonal sonorities, combining his interest in exploring the perceptual qualities of sound with a unique sense of beauty and form. Brook holds a master’s degree in music composition from McGill University. He currently lives in New York, where he recently completed a DMA in music composition at Columbia University May 2018, with Fred Lerdahl. Brook is currently on faculty at Columbia University as a Core Lecturer. Brook is the technical director of TAK ensemble. Ballenas Music Program Courses
Ballenas Music Program On behalf of the students and director of the Ballenas Music Program, wel- come to an organization in which you can be proud. Each year we have new students that bring new vitality and enthusiasm into the program. We hope that in the coming years, music will prove beneficial and rewarding for you. As you learn more about music, you will also learn more about team- work, commitment and responsibility. Concert Band Program The Ballenas Concert Band program is at the core of the award-winning Ballenas Music program. Rehearsals for Band 10-12 are Tuesday and Thursday at 7:15-8:15am. Concert Band 8 and 9 was in B block every other day this past year. All students can expect to perform a variety of musical styles in a series of school, festival, and community con- certs. Trips and festivals have been, and continue to be an important part of the Ballenas music activities. As well as having participated in local festivals on the Island, we have been to MusicFest Canada in Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver, and the Canadian Rocky Mountain Music Festival in Banff. We are proud to have many awards of Silver and Gold displayed on our music room wall. Trips and festivals have been, and continue to be an important part of the Ballenas music activities. If you are a former Ballenas Music student, then you will have incredible memories of international trips to Seattle, San Francisco, Disneyland (three times), New Orleans, and Hawaii (three times)! The destination of this year’s trip is San Francisco, and all students in the Concert Band 8-12 and Choir 8-12 are welcome to participate! Participation in concerts and festivals is a course requirement. -
