Champion – Final draft, Jan. 2012] The agrarian interests of the borough and Shrewsbury abbey By the 1840s almost 3,000 acres of gardens and agricultural land in Shrewsbury’s suburban townships, including Abbey Foregate, still remained to be surveyed by the tithe commissioners, of which half (c.1481 a.) lay in the parish of Holy Cross and St Giles.1 Although to some extent, as elsewhere,2 the open fields at Shrewsbury were once located closest to the built-up areas, with the common pastures further out, that pattern was disturbed not only by the inherent quality of land but also by the sinuous course of the Severn and the disposition of the old river bed abandoned c.5,000 years ago, leaving much of Coton encircled by a belt of damp 'moors'.3 In addition, until 1835 the manor of Meole Brace, including Kingsland common, separated the open fields of Coleham and Frankwell.4 As a result a more irregular pattern existed, notably in Coton where some of the arable open fields lay at the furthest point from the town, separated from it by a mixture of moors and closes.

BUNNAGAR. — The funeral of Mr. George Bunnagar, formerly of Jackfield, whose death was recorded in last weeks issue, took place on Sunday at Broseley cemetery. Mr. W. Clare (Clive) conducted service in the cemetery chapel. The bearers were Messrs. G. B. Headley, W. Storey, T. Smallman, J. Morgan and A. Colley, old neighbours. The family mourners included Messrs.     A Guide to the Archives of the Police Forces of England and Wales Ian Bridgeman Clive Emsley FORWARD BY THE PATRON OF THE POLICE HISTORY SOCIETY, LORD KNIGHTS, CBE, QPM, DL Clive Emsley and Ian Bridgeman have performed a great service in bringing out this comprehensive guide to the police archives of England and Wales, and revealing the wide range that these cover. Given the ravages of time, police mergers, weeders and weevils, coverage is necessarily uneven so that, for example, nothing survives in the Gloucester police archives which dates from before 1929 whereas Cambridge has records going back to 1822. The Cambridgeshire Constabulary is also exceptional in the number of documents which it has retained from the 1830's and 1840's, since police records do not generally pre-date the compulsory establishment of the new police following the 1856 Police Act. Many of the surviving records have already been deposited in local record offices, but what this guide reveals for the first time is the very wide range of the material which remains in police archives - some of it in a very poor state of preservation and much of it unindexed. In particular, most forces - for obvious internal, bureaucratic reasons - seem to have retained their personnel registers which, since they often run consecutively for a hundred or more years, provide an invaluable source for research into family, medical or migration history. Unfortunately, police stations do not always make ideal quarters for such valuable but fragile records. Space is often at a premium, as of course is the financial support necessary for proper conservation.

It demands much of those on the frontline in all manner of ways and requires skill, expertise and real commitment to deal with the whole of life that is encountered. Issues of truth, justice, guilt, forgiveness, restitution, peace in society, protecting the most vulnerable, right/wrong, neighbourliness, are a small part of the ‘daily round’. Encountering people at their very best and most amazing often in the midst of the most tragic of circumstances is done alongside dealing with human behaviour at its most depraved, criminal and evil. Commitment, tenacity, bravery and integrity - all exercised with compassion and fairness - are the personal qualities that together with professional skills, sustain the ‘thin blue line’. Frontline personnel also serve with a willingness, should the need arise, to put themselves in the place of danger and harm to protect and serve others.

    Throughout the United Kingdom, our Police Forces deliver a service that is the envy of the world. Our Police Officers and Civilian Support Staff, drawn from a multitude of diverse backgrounds, but unified by a sense of commitment and duty, distinguish themselves on a daily basis through their courage, consideration and sensitivity to the needs of those they protect. Since the Police are so deeply integrated within the communities they serve, there can be a temptation for society to take your commitment for granted. However, I would like to take this opportunity to express my special admiration for the many acts of selflessness and individual heroism which occur daily. Whether these are reported or not, all deserved our respect and gratitude as we mark the National Police Memorial Day in Glasgow today. In these difficult times, violent crime presents a significant threat not only to the safety of Police Officers and our communities, but also to the very fabric of our society. I particularly wish to remember the five Officers who have so tragically lost their lives in the line of duty since last year’s ceremony in Belfast, and to offer my deepest sympathy to their loved ones, together with profound gratitude for their service. At such an impossibly heartbreaking time, I do hope that their families will derive some small consolation in knowing that we shall forever honour their memory… Policing in the United Kingdom has enormous pressures to contend with, no more so than on the front line. As society changes, so must the way in which we support and protect our communities.
