Milan Gavrilović Taksonomija i filogenija Xeranthemum grupe (Asteraceae) – morfološki, anatomski, fitohemijski i molekularni aspekti Sažetak Xeranthemum grupu čine rodovi Shangwua, Amphoricarpos, Chardinia, Xeranthemum i Siebera, anatomski, mikromorfološki i fitohemijski gotovo neistraženi. Određeni mikromorfološki, anatomski i molekularni markeri podržavaju filogeniju Xeranthemum grupe. Ključne reči: Asteraceae; Xeranthemum grupa; morfologija; mikromorfologija; anatomija; masne kiseline, seskviterpenski laktoni i fenolna jedinjenja; ITS i plastidni markeri; biološka aktivnost; taksonomija; filogenija. Naučna oblast: Biologija Uža naučna oblast: Morfologija, fitohemija i sistematika biljaka Taxonomy and phylogeny of the Xeranthemum group (Asteraceae) – morphological, anatomical, phytochemical and molecular aspects Abstract The Xeranthemum group includes Shangwua, Amphoricarpos, Chardinia, Xeranthemum and Siebera, anatomically, micromorphologically and phytochemically almost unexplored. The taxonomy of the whole group, especially of the Amphoricarpos is very complex. In this study, it was shown that micromorphological traits link together perennial species, some link annual ones, some are species-specific, and some are common to all taxa. Amphoricarpos taxa showed similar anatomical features, while selected anatomical characters differentiated Xeranthemum species. Eight fatty acids were found in the Amphoricarpos taxa cypselae, of which linoleic was dominant, while 12 fatty acids were found in X. cylindraceum cypselae, of which oleic was dominant. The dominant sesquiterpene lactone in the A. elegans is 3-deoxyamphoricarpolide. In Amphoricarpos taxa 30 phenolic compounds were identified, where chryzoeriol was dominant among the surface compounds of all taxa, and 5-O-caffeoylcholic acid among vacuolar ones, except for A. neumayerianus subsp. neumayerianus. The biological activity of Amphoricarpos showed a very good or moderate effect. Certain micromorphological, anatomical and molecular markers support the phylogeny of the Xeranthemum group. The morphological characters of the vegetative structures and the capitulum best separated four Balkan Amphoricarpos taxa. The micromorphological characters of the involucral bract particularly distinguished the Bosnian-Herzegovinian taxon. Phytochemical differences are evident between Balkan taxa. Molecular analyzes have shown that the genus

  • Practical Experiences in Invasive Alien Plant Control
ROSALIA Handbooks ROSALIA Handbooks Practical Experiences in Invasive Alien Plant Control Second, revised and expanded edition Invasive plant species pose major agricultural, silvicultural, human health and ecological problems worldwide, and are considered the most signifi cant threat for nature conservation. Species invading natural areas in Hungary have been described by a number of books published in the Practical Experiences in Invasive Alien Plant Control last few years. A great amount of experience has been gathered about the control of these species in some areas, which we can read about in an increasing number of articles; however, no book has been published with regards to the whole country. Invasions affecting larger areas require high energy and cost input, and the effectiveness and successfulness of control can be infl uenced by a number of factors. The development of effective, widely applicable control and eradication technologies is preceded by experiments and examinations which are based on a lot of practical experience and often loaded with negative experiences. National park directorates, forest and agricultural managers and NGOs in many parts of Hungary are combatting the spread of invasive species; however, the exchange of information and conclusion of experiences among the managing bodies is indispensable. The aim of the present volume is to facilitate this by summarizing experiences and the methods applied in practice; which, we hope, will enable us to successfully stop the further spread of invasive plant species and effectively protect our natural values. Georeferenced phylogenetic analysis of a global collection of wild and cultivated Citrullus species Enoch Gbenato Achigan-Dako1, Herve Degbey1, Iago Hale2, and Frank Blattner3 1Affiliation not available 2University of New Hampshire, Durham, New Hampshire, USA 3Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Research (IPK) August 17, 2020 Abstract The geographical origin of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) remains debated. While a first hypothesis suggests the center of origin to be west Africa, where a sister endemic species C. mucosospermus thrives, a second hypothesis suggests north-eastern Africa where the white-fleshed Sudanese Kordophan melon is cultivated. In this study, we infer biogeographical and haplotype genealogy for C. lanatus, C. mucosospermus, C. amarus, and C. colocynthis using non-coding cpDNA sequences (trnT-trnL and ndhF-rpl32 regions) from a global collection of 135 accessions. In total, we identified 38 haplotypes in C. lanatus, C. mucosospermus, C. amarus, and C. colocynthis; of these, 21 were found in Africa and 17 appear endemic to the continent. The least diverse species was C. mucosospermus (5 haplotypes) and the most diverse was C. colocynthis (16 haplotypes). Some haplotypes of C. mucosospermus were nearly exclusive to West-Africa, and C. lanatus and C. mucosospermus shared haplotypes that were distinct from those of both C. amarus and C. colocynthis. The results support previous findings C. mucosospermus to be the closest relative to C. lanatus (including subsp. cordophanus). West Africa, as a center of endemism of C. mucosospermus, is an area of interest in the search of the origin of C. lanatus. This calls for further historical and phylogeographical investigations and wider collection of samples in West and North-East Africa.

The main goal of the study was to examine the most important anatomical features and to find new valid taxonomic delimiting characters for the first time in both species. Regarding vegetative organs anatomy, the data obtained in this study indicated that both species possessed secondary tissues in the root, although these plants are annual. Also, stem anatomy was a typical of the Compositae family members, and anomocytic stomata type and dorsiventral leaf structure were present. On the involucral bracts surface crystals were noticeable, while highly developed multilayer sclerenchyma was present in the mesophyll. Palea anatomy was very similar to bract anatomy. Some floral features were as follows: lateral anther dehiscence, corolla composed of uniseriate epidermis and with a homogeneous parenchyma in the mesophyll, inferior ovary and anatropous ovule with basal placentation.

Dimkić et al. AMB Expr (2020) 10:183 https://doi.org/10.1186/s13568-020-01120-5 ORIGINAL ARTICLE Open Access New perspectives of purple starthistle (Centaurea calcitrapa) leaf extracts: phytochemical analysis, cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activity Ivica Dimkić1*† , Marija Petrović1†, Milan Gavrilović1, Uroš Gašić2, Petar Ristivojević3, Slaviša Stanković1 and Peđa Janaćković1 Abstract Ethnobotanical and ethnopharmacological studies of many Centaurea species indicated their potential in folk medi- cine so far. However, investigations of diferent Centaurea calcitrapa L. extracts in terms of cytotoxicity and antimi- crobial activity against phytopathogens are generally scarce. The phenolic profle and broad antimicrobial activity (especially towards bacterial phytopathogens) of methanol (MeOH), 70% ethanol (EtOH), ethyl-acetate (EtOAc), 50% acetone (Me2CO) and dichloromethane: methanol (DCM: MeOH, 1: 1) extracts of C. calcitrapa leaves and their poten- tial toxicity on MRC-5 cell line were investigated for the frst time. A total of 55 phenolic compounds were identifed: 30 phenolic acids and their derivatives, 25 favonoid glycosides and aglycones. This is also the frst report of the pres- ence of centaureidin, jaceidin, kaempferide, nepetin, favonoid glycosides, phenolic acids and their esters in C. calci- trapa extracts. The best results were obtained with EtOAc extract with lowest MIC values expressed in µg/mL ranging from 13 to 25, while methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus was the most susceptible strain. The most susceptible phytopathogens were Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae, Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris and Agrobacte- rium tumefaciens.
