Abstract The bachelor thesis Karel Kryl and media reception of his work aims to map the response to music creation and partly also to the poetry of Karel Kryl in contemporary journals. Besides the chapter containing media response, there is a part describing biography and creative production of Karel Kryl as well as the chapter that aims to cover the interpretation of the artworks. The results of this thesis were achieved by the qualitative analysis of media reception alike as other publications. Time frame of media response is copying the period of Kryl’s artistic production – which means the period from 60’s to his death in 1994. Institut komunikačních studií a žurnalistiky Teze bakalářské diplomové práce 1 Úvod Tématem bakalářské práce je zmapování mediálního ohlasu písňové tvorby Karla Kryla. V této době si teprve stavěl svou cestu k publiku, k čemuž mu dopomohli i manželé Černí s jejich rozhlasovým pořadem Houpačka a referováním v hudebním 2 časopise Melodie.

It was an intrusion of the Soviet Union into Czechoslovakia that no one had expected. There were many events that led to the aggressive action of the Soviets that could be dated way back, events that preceded the Prague Spring. Even though it is a very recent topic, the Cold War made it hard for people outside the Soviet Union to understand what the regime was about and what exactly was wrong about it. Things that leaked out of the country were mostly positive and that is why the rest of the world did not feel the need to interfere. Even within the country, many incidents were explained using excuses and lies just so citizens would not want to revolt. Throughout the years of the communist regime people started realizing the lies they were being told, but even then they could not oppose it.

  • Reflections on Rock Music Culture in East Europe and the Soviet Union
Etnomüzikoloji Dergisi Ethnomusicology Journal Yıl/Year: 1 • Sayı/Issue: 2 (2018) Leninism Versus Lennonism; Reflections on Rock Music Culture in East Europe and the Soviet Union Timothy W. Ryback From December 16 to 18, 1965, the Central Committee of the East Ger- man communist party devoted a special session to the ideological welfare of the country’s youth. The committee intended to set the ideological agenda, and to underscore the importance of protecting young people from the per- nicious influences of western youth culture, in particular, the increasingly pervasive phenonemon of rock and pop music. The East German leaders identified gowing rowdiness in schools, drunkenness on the streets, rising in- cidents of criminal activity, including physical asaults and rape, and equally disturbing a noticeble rise in ideological disaffection among the youth. Horst Sindermann, responsible for press and radio, emphasized this latter point with a concrete example. “A 15-year-old, who had not learned a single word of English and who had to leave school in the fifth grade because he could not even speak German properly, sang popular songs in English evening after evening”, Sindermann reported. “How could he do this? He listened to tapes forty times and learned by his own phonetic method to give off sounds that he perceived as being English. There is no doubt that with these methods, you could teach beat music to a parakeet”. The party chairman,Walter Ulbricht, underscored the ideological threat by invoking the lyrics of a song from the Beatles: “The endless monotony of this ‘yeah, yeah, yeah’ is not just ridiculous, it is spirit- ually deadening”.

Qy~ oWd!-1 Dean of the Graduate School 430804 ii PREFACE During the twenty year period between the Versailles settlement and the collapse of the European security system Czechos lovakia alone among the new states of Europe developed a viable democratic order. Yet with in less than three years after the conclusion of the second World War this "model democracy" wa s overthrown in a coup d'etat by the Communist party with the support of the parliamentary majority and the organized working class. Czechos lovakia is the only democratic republic that has been subverted successfully by Communist s , and the only country that the Communi st s have captured without either recourse to civil warfare--as in Russia, China, Yugoslavia and Vietnam--or to the intervention of the Soviet armed forces--as in the numerous satellite states of Europe and Asia which came under Russian occupation in the wake of the war against the Axis . This thesis i s an attempt to analyse the events which led to the demise of democracy in Czechoslovakia in February, 1948, and to discern the causes for the weakening of the democratic ideology, the spread of Communist influence, and the failure of the legal and political safe guards to preserve the constitutional order of the state.

  • Civil Resistance in Central and Eastern Europe Reflected In: Literature, Art and Film” - Syllabus Spring 2012
“Civil Resistance in Central and Eastern Europe Reflected in: Literature, Art and Film” - Syllabus Spring 2012 PhDr. Monika MacDonagh-Pajerová [email protected], tel. +420 603 146 206, Office hours by appointment -Wed. or Thurs. Afternoon. Course description: The course will examine the nature and significance of civil resistance in Central and Eastern Europe in the 20th century in a transversal, multi-disciplinary way. By studying literature, art and film we will operate in a space between modern history, political science, literature and film studies and psychology. Civil resistance is not the same as just opting out of society or having views which go against the grain. It is far more fundamental than that and anybody raised in a democratic society where freedom of expression – both civil and artistic – is guaranteed, faces a challenge in trying to understand the circumstances in which people lived in this region in the past hundred years. It is about taking a decision – not to conform, not to go quietly along, with repressive regimes like Communism and Nazism. It is also about choosing the mode of action – political i.e. non-violent or military, especially in the times of war. Until recently, study has tended to emphasize the role of physical force in dealing with totalitarian regimes. Since 1989 there has been growing recognition that civil, artistic and educational activities can be equally important. You can not understand civil resistance without understanding what the resistance is against – so this course requires us to get a foundation of understanding in how totalitarian regimes act, why people actively conform with them and why free expression and access to information from the outside world is considered as the biggest threat.

  • The Uncivilized Society of Czechoslovak Tramps. an Exploration in Proletarian Fantasy1 OPEN ACCESS Joseph Grim Feinberg
The uncivilized society of Czechoslovak tramps. An exploration in proletarian fantasy1 OPEN ACCESS Joseph Grim Feinberg This article examines the relationship between the political theories of Central European dissidents and the social practice of “tramping,” a back-to-nature movement that was associated with opposi- -tional politics and “anti-politics” in Czechoslovakia from the end of World War I until 1989. The ar ticle reflects on the potential political significance of the tramping movement’s ideal of uncivilized society as an alternative to the dissidents’ concept of “civil society,” which began as a call for “anti- political” transformation, and yet after 1989 became an ideological justification for explicitly elitist modes of liberal-conservative governance. The concept of “uncivilized society,” which can be drawn from the discourse of tramping, has parallels in contemporary autonomist calls for tactical retreats -from oppressive modernity. The article concludes that the tramping movement’s emphasis on inter nal organization best distinguishes the movement both from East-Central European dissent before 1989 and from autonomism today. Keywords: back-to-nature movements, civil society, anti-politics, Czech tramping, Czech tramps, Czechoslo- vakia CIVIL SOCIETY AND OTHER ANTI-POLITICS O tramps and pirates; O wolves with worn-out faces; O souls stalked by desire; O proletarians of the ages! The wild distance made us drunk with exotic clouds of steamy gold, And our vagabond flag we hoisted on a pole. The first verse of Tramps’ Heart, by Géza Včelička, early 1930s2 In the years before 1989, oppositional and countercultural movements in East-Central Europe were marked by a certain exodus from the realm of politics.
