Photographer's Final Report 1998 Donna Alberico During the 1998 season 108 black & white film rolls and 98 color slide film rolls were exposed. All black & white film has been developed, sleeved, and contact printed. Color slide film remained cool in the fridge until departure back to Cambridge where it will be developed. 1 color print film roll for general use will also be developed in cambridge. Kodachrome color slide film ASA25 was brought and labeled a bit later in the season so roll #'s 69,71,73,75,77,81, 83,85,87,89,91,93,95,97,99 don't exist. Black & white and color polaroid film was purchased in Izmir during the season. 12 sheets were used for passport photos, the rest remains for the 1999 season. All mid-season newsletter prints, end-of-season prints for the commissioner, and general directorate of monuments and museum prints were printed here. Extra prints are provided for future use. Field photography went well. Have continued with the old ways of leaving a field camera bag and meter stick in the çardak for excavators to take their own record shots during the work day when it's too time consuming to come find me. The low contrast/high contrast system for black & white film is also being continued, it's a great way to get the most out of different lighting situations. At the end of everyday the camera bag was returned and film was replenished and all cameras and lenses were cleaned. For we all know how much dirt flies around. A substantial amount of monopod shooting took place. During the season the connection on the MD12 motor drive for the quickrelease cable broke and was taken into Izmir to be repaired. Pieces that had broken off had been replaced and is once again working fine, but needs to be handled delicately. It would be wise to try and find the real replacement piece (for the MD12 nikon motor drive) to have on site incase the new added pieces come loose. This can be found by either asking in a camera repair shop or calling nikon. A new project was started in PN, rebuilding the walls that have been slowly deteriorating over the years. All have been documented before reconstruction and only the most destroyed walls have been photographed after. A bit of shooting also took place in church E for the church publication that Kathy Kiefer is working on. The trench photography: things to consider manual has been updated and printed out and put in the field camera bag for the excavators to review when needed (see attached). Also the meter sticks have been repainted and are looking better. It would be great if we could make some sort of cloth or plastic carrying/protective case for the meter sticks, this way they won't get damaged as fast. Object photography in 1998 included the rest of 1997 cats., publication shots for Churches volume, record shots for hellenistic pottery and gold refinery, and the before and after treatment shots of the 2 vases from Manisa museum(P59.412 & P59.414). Also 1998 cats. were photographed except the items listed in the recorders final report. These objects should try and be photographed at the beginning of the 1999 season so we can make more room and time for the new objects. Equipment Had a couple of minor problems that were all taken care of in Izmir by Huseyin Sayar (Tel# 484 37 71). The rewind mechanism on FE2 camera body #2293864 was repaired and is working perfect. As mentioned earlier the MD12 motor drive connection for the quickrelease cable was also fixed, has been working great to date. The cost of this was 750 million Lira ($1.00=T.L.267,500). The M2 extension ring is being brought back to cambridge to be fixed, unfortunately when attached to the camera the apeture leaves don't open and close. Darkroom/processing Enjoying the new renovated darkroom (thank you Eliza). Still having some problems with sediment, not too bad though. Instead of squeegeing the film with a photowipe (I find it to risky, easy to scratch the film), I wash for 5 minutes after fixing, permawash for 1 minute, wash again for 10 minutes, then photoflo for 30 seconds and hold the film at an angle so the photoflo drips off. This way of washing film seems to be working well. Photolist Final printouts for the excavators were printed and returned to me. All records have been entered and updated(after development). It's fairly convenient entering on data base. Thank you Laura for all your help and patience with me.
