    7 GRECO- ROMAN CIVILIZATION 1150L GRECO- ROMAN EARLY EXPERIMENTS IN PARTICIPATORY GOVERNMENT By Cynthia Stokes Brown, adapted by Newsela Instead of rule by a single person, Athens and Rome developed governments with widespread participation by male elites, which lasted about 170 years in Athens and 480 years in Rome. 2 3 Deep time Present-day Greece, with Athens as its capital, and Italy, with Rome as its capital, are neighbors along the northern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. Eighty-five million years ago they were already neighbors, but across the sea in Africa. By 55 million years ago, continental drift had carried the Euro- pean and African continents together. By 5 million years ago, the promon- tory consisting of the future Italy and Greece had collided with the European crust, overriding it, creating the Alps and the mountains of Greece. After 5 million years of rocks and water pouring out of the Alps over Italy, countless earthquakes, the apparent drying out and refilling of the Med- iterranean Sea, and microplates (Corsica and Sardinia) swinging down the Italian peninsula, the northern coast of the Mediterranean became the setting for the development of two distinctive societies, with the Romans eventually swallowing the Greeks as part of the Roman Empire. Location and food On the Greek peninsula, the Greeks occupied the southern shoreline, called Attica. Another group, the Macedonians, inhabited the northern territories. Attica was composed of rocky soil on steep mountains. The soil was poor, so Greeks had limited options for food. They grew barley, grapes, olive trees, figs, and lentils. They also raised sheep and goats.

Sherk OTAMON OF MYTILENE, son of the philosopher Lesbonax, was an P orator of high repute among the citizens of Mytilene in the age of Julius Caesar and Augustus.! His reputation rested not only on his oratorical abilities and published works but also on his states­ manlike qualities and personal service to his city. On at least three occasions, and possibly many more, he was selected to represent the city of Mytilene on very important missions to the Roman govern­ ment. It was a common practice to select orators, philosophers, sophists and others of high intellectual achievement to act as envoys to foreign states, and Potamon was eminently successfu1.2 He was also very well known and respected in foreign cities, including Rome.3 His diplomatic successes appear to have been most notable in the role he played as leader of embassies to Rome and elsewhere in the troubled period after Pharsalus and in the early years of Augustus. The final honor of a public monument on the acropolis of Mytilene was granted to him as a fitting reward for his many fine services. On the face of the marble blocks of this great monument a grateful city had inscribed copies of the official documents which mentioned his name or activities.     ATHENS: FROM CITY-STATETO PROVINCIAL TOWN A ETERTHE MIDDLE of the 2nd century B.C., the power of Rome was the domi- nating force in Greek lands. The cities and sanctuariesof Greece came one after another to feel the oppressionof the Roman legions and the rapacityof their generals, as the Hellenistic world was graduallyreshaped and reorganizedinto the eastern prov- inces of the Roman Empire. Among the old cities of classical Greece, the Roman con- quest wrought profound historicalchanges in government, in economic life, and in the conditions and aspirationsof the people. Nowhere does this emerge more clearly than in the material remains which form the archaeologicalrecord, for these enable us to document in some detail the process of cultural permutationby which a self-sufficient city-state of classicalGreece evolved into a provincialtown of the Roman Empire. The evolution left many aspects of a city's life unchanged and tenaciously Hellenic, but confrontedwith these were buildings, artifacts,and a way of life which came eventually to exhibit the internationalimperial style of the Roman world. In this confrontationof Greek and Roman, of permanenceand change, we witness the central fact and fertiliz- ing force of classical civilization as it is revealed to us by the surviving monuments of antiquity. The gradualfusion of Greek and Roman cultures in the first two centuries of Ro- man rule appearsat Athens as graphicallyas anywhere in Greece because of the city's unique position in Greek history and culture. Her glorious past as mistress of the Ae- gean still fired the spirit, while her unrivaled supremacy in the arts and letters, and especially in philosophy, still seduced the mind.

POMPONIA AttICA In the preserved part of the work by Cornelius Nepos, who is characterized as the founder of the ‘political biography’ in Rome, the depiction of T. Pomponius Atticus plays a significant role. Ac- cording to Nepos, one of the positive features of the character was his resignation over a systematic political activity. However, Atticus’ close relationship to numerous personalities of the time sug- gests that he was unable, or rather unwilling, to distance himself from a political life completely. Specifically, his contact with Agrippa, which is described in great detail by Nepos, can be viewed as Atticus’s attempt to gain access to Octavian and to show loyalty to the emerging Principate. The way Atticus is depicted proves that a biography of a character, who is supposed to be apolitical, can contain political features in the end. Tato situace se nutně odrážela především v současné, ale i pozdější historiografické tvorbě, která se z pochopitelných důvodů soustřeďovala především na činy silných osobností a představitelů politického a vojenského života. Snaha zachytit jejich skutečnou roli v odehrávajících se událostech a odkrýt pohnutky jejich jednání vyvolávala často touhu poznat blíže jejich individuální povahové rysy, a zejména zvláštnos- ti, pro něž se obvykle nedostávalo místa v optice politicky či úzce vojensky za- měřeného obrazu rozvíjejících se střetů, jak bylo běžné v tradičním zpracování historické látky.

When they open, Cicero was enjoying a restful interval after the troublous times of the Civil War. He had made his peace with Caesar and reconciled himself to a life of retirement and literary activity. In the Senate he never spoke except to deliver a speech pleading for the return from e.xile of his friend Marcellus ; and his only other public appearance was to advocate the cause of another friend, Ligarius. In both he was successful ; and, indeed, so he seems also to have been in private appeals to Caesar on behalf of friends.
