For immediate release Presenting Sponsor: Unigroup Relocation Brothers Genz sing Bach, Mahler and Schubert The Hong Kong Bach Choir presents the Genz brothers in a unique concert series of Bach, Mahler and Schubert from 1-4 October 2013 at Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall at 8pm. Bach & Mahler (1st October 2013) The opening concert will see the Hong Kong Bach Chamber Choir returning to its Bach roots together with Christoph and Stephan Genz in a programme of Bach cantatas and Mahler vocal works. With Christoph Genz as one of today’s foremost and most-recorded Bach tenors and Stephan Genz as a multiple-award-winning baritone, this promises to be a truly exceptional performance. The concert features a remarkable programme: when performed side by side, the influence of the high Baroque Bach on the arch-Romantic Mahler can be heard, especially in the latter’s seminal song-cycles Kindertotenlieder and Lieder einer fahrendes Gesellen. The programme will include one of Bach’s most famous cantatas, BWV 82 Ich habe Genug; his sublime motet BWV 229 Komm, Jesu, komm; and a rarely-heard choral transcription of Mahler’s Die zwei blauen Augen. Schubert (2nd, 3rd & 4th October 2013) In a rare opportunity to hear a world-class vocal recital series in Hong Kong, the Genz brothers will perform a further three concerts dedicated to Schubert, the most prolific composer of the Lieder genre. Each evening will feature one of Schubert’s celebrated song-cycles: Die Schöne Müllerin, Winterreise and the composer’s posthumously published Schwanengesang. Spanning the full range of human emotion from joy to tragedy, these moving song cycles represent truly exquisite journeys of the heart as interpreted by top international soloists. Seldom are the three performed as a set anywhere in the world, making this concert series a landmark event on Hong Kong’s cultural calendar. Artists Christoph Genz (tenor) has delighted audiences the world over with his moving renditions of Bach’s work. From his early career in Leipzig where he won the International J.S. Bach Competition, he has performed on stages across Europe, the US and Asia with distinguished conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Sir John Eliot Gardiner and Herbert Blomstedt. His talent on the stage has led to a successful recording career, including Bach Cantatas under Gardiner, Reinhard Goebel and Sigiswald Kuijken, Mass in B Minor under Blomstedt, Kuijken and George Christopher Biller, St. Matthew Passion under Kuijken, St. John Passion under Ludwig Güttler, and Christmas Oratorio under GPO Box 2334, Central, Hong Kong www.bachchoir.org.hk Gardiner. Genz is also an active lieder singer and has performed the three Schubert song cycles at the Gewandhaus Leipzig. Stephan Genz (baritone) is one of the leading lieder singers of his generation. He has worked with the great Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. He came into international prominence after winning the Johannes Brahms Competition in Hamburg and the Hugo Wolf Competition in Stuttgart. Stephan Genz has released multiple CD recordings which have won him the Timbre de Platine and Diapason d’Or. For his recording of Beethoven Lieder, Genz received the Gramophone Award and the German Record Critics’ Award. His Mahler recordings with Hyperion have all been critically acclaimed. Cornelia Herrmann (piano) was born into a family of musicians in Salzburg. She was the youngest winner of the International J. S. Bach Competition in Leipzig, and in 1999 gained a special award at the International Mozart Competition in Salzburg.
