Foreword The media are among the most powerful social forces of our time, and whether we are talking about the political, economic or cultural sphere, we cannot avoid taking the media into account. Media, and not least Internet, represent social and cultural resources that can empower people, in both their personal development and their development as members of society. An important prerequisite for empowerment of citizens is a concerted effort to improve media and informa- tion literacy. Such skills that strengthen citizens’ critical faculties and ability to communicate, both of which enable them to use media and communication as tools and as a way to articulate processes of development and social change. In short, media and information literacy empowers people to influence and im- prove their lives – while promoting a well-oriented, democratic and sustainable society. But, we often tend to forget how crucially important such skills are for both democracy and development. Media and information literacy is needed for all citizens, but it is of decisive importance to the younger generation – to their performance as citizens, their participation in society, and to their learning, cultural expression and personal fulfilment. Throughout history, young people have often been active participants in the manifestation of social change, and most times their creative uses of media and innovative practices of communication have been crucial in the process. Youth have had key roles in citizen media, in alternative media that stimulate public debate, or in campaigning for particular causes such as HIV/AIDS preven- tion, political freedom, freedom of expression, fair trade, etc. Different Internet platforms

VAN LAER Archivist, Archives and History Division ALBANY THE UNIVERSITY OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK I 935 PREFACE In the preface to the Correspondence of Jeremias van Rens­ selaer, which was piiblished in 1932, attention was called to the fact that after the death of Jeremias van Rensselaer his widow carried on a regular correspondence with her husband's youngest brother, Richard van Rensselaer, in regard to the administration of the colony of Rensselaerswyck, and the plan was announced to publish this correspondence in another volume. This plan has been carried into effect in the present volume, which contains translations of all that has been preserved of the correspondence of Maria van Rensselaer, including besides the correspondence with her brother-in-law many letters which passed between her and her brother Stephanus van Cortlandt and other members of the Van Cortlandt family. Maria van Rensselaer was born at New York on July 20, 1645, and was the third child of Oloff Stevensen van Cortlandt and his wife Anna Loockermans. She married on July 12, 1662, when not quite 17 years of age, Jeremias van Rensselaer, who in 1658 had succeeded his brother Jan Baptist van Rensse­ laer as director of the colony of Rensselaerswyck. By him she had four sons and two daughters, her youngest son, Jeremias, being born shortly after her husband's death, which occurred on October 12, 1674. As at the time there was no one available who could succeed Jeremias van Rensselaer as director of the colony, the burden of its administration fell temporarily upon his widow, who in this emergency sought the advice of her brother Stephanus van Cortlandt.

Economic globalization, according to some economic theories, has adverse consequences for la- bor, especially less skilled labor, in the rich democracies. If these voters are the median, then we might expect parties to respond to this by turning against globalization and the openness to flows of goods, services, people and capital that it brings. Have parties turned against economic openness? And have parties, especially extreme right-wing ones, that oppose openness advanced in terms of their electoral strength as a result? Furthermore, have these pressures from global- ization been mitigated by social welfare policies, as earlier research claimed? First, updating and extending the research of Burgoon(2009), I ask whether political parties in the advanced indus- trial countries have adopted more anti-internationalist platforms as globalization has advanced. Second, I examine whether parties have been affected deferentially by globalization; in particular, have extreme, right-wing populist parties gained vote share as globalization has proceeded, while mainstream left ones have lost. The evidence suggests that globalization, especially trade, is associated with a political turn to anti-internationalism and to extremist parties. The quartet’s sound is a combination of timbres and resonances. Every kind of approach is taken in a mixture of acoustic, electric, uncommon instrumental sounds as well as electronic and electroacoustic treatment of various sound sources. Dramatic generation of material and soundscapes disrupt bearings and invent a instantaneous poetry through processing, deconstruction and distortion. The listener navigates through a sea of reminiscences, guided by fragments of melodies like the residues of a collective memory. With this new repertory, the music places sound matter at the centre of the drama, questioning notions of permanence (emotions, bodies, ideas) and time (perpetual movement, spirals, abysses). The traditional stage/audience layout is also questioned with the creation of a circular common ground which gives both performers and audience the possibility to move around, thus changing their visual and auditive perception.
