We believe quite simply that a bicycle vacation should be about many things – but not discomfort. We are confident you will agree. It seems almost too obvious – a bicycle vacation is first and foremost about riding a bicycle.

In our opinion recumbents are orders of magnitude more comfortable than upright bicycles. You will be amazed that cycling can be so much fun because it is so comfortable. In addition to their superb comfort, the natural upright sitting position on a recumbent makes it easy to look around and enjoy the scenery while you are riding along. BikeE with rear suspension How comfortable are recumbents? To give you an idea, in my first year of riding recumbents I eagerly rode 5,500 km (3,500 miles). History of Recumbents The very first pedaled bicycle (circa 1839) was a recumbent. Due to lack of suitable gear and chain technology, the diameter of the directly pedaled front wheel was steadily increased until it was as large as could be comfortably ridden – the machine became the high-wheeler, also known as the penny-farthing. The only way that the high-wheeler could be pedaled and steered was for the rider to be almost vertically over the front wheel.

When the development of improved chains and Recumbent bicycles have had many sprockets (circa 1884) allowed the revivals. Upright Cycles Too! We can rent a traditional upright hybrid bicycle locally in lieu of a recumbent for any participant. If you decide you prefer a traditional upright bicycle, please advise us at least one week before your tour. The choice is yours. Of course, we doubt you will want to give up the comfort of your recumbent. Hybrids are generally available in unisex models with 18-21 speed indexed shifting.

You may also bring your own bicycle, recumbent or upright. Please advise us before hand if you intend to do so.

Provence is an ancient region where 2,000-year old Roman roads and bridges remain in constant daily use. It is a land with an abundance of architectural marvels from bygone civilizations worn down by wars and invasions. Yet for all its history, Provence is perhaps best enjoyed by a murmuring fountain in a forgotten whitewashed hilltop village, lost in the haze of a sunny day. Add to that the tang of goat cheese with olive oil, fresh basil mixed with ripened tomatoes, robust red wines, the scent of lavender & rosemary hedges heated by the sun and you have the recipe for a funtastic cycling vacation. Les Alpilles This tour focuses on the charms of Les Alpilles (little Alps) region. While Les Alpilles are of course small rugged mountains, the area west of them where we will do most of our cycling is mainly flat. This is an opportunity to soak in the Provençal charm without climbing too many hills and to visit the Provençal landscape that inspired many Van Gogh paintings.

Off the beaten tourist track, Gascony is an ideal cycling region. Not overly rugged, it is a fertile and gentle land of small valleys, plains and heath covered limestone plateaus whose first towns and roads were built during Roman times to take advantage of its privileged geographic position at the confluence of the Lot and Garonne rivers. Here we pedal along peaceful tree lined country roads as we enjoy the fragrances of France's main orchard region, the wonders of its Roman churches and the splendors of its fortified castles, and medieval villages (called bastides) developed during the Middle Ages. Known as Guienne in the Middle Ages, Gascony was embroiled in the Hundred Years War that erupted in 1337. Later the birthplace of King Henry IV, it was a bastion of the Huguenots, whose presence led to the bloody and devastating wars of religion from 1562 -1598. Gascony offers cyclists an opportunity to enjoy a less challenging (less hilly) cycle tour far from tourist hordes in a region that is just as picturesque and ancient as the Dordogne region. If you want to visit the southwest of France and want to avoid a few hills, then this is the funtastic cycling tour for you.
