In this study, the mute and dwarf employment at the Ottoman court is considered both within the context of the world-wide practices of keeping court jesters and their common origins, and with regard to its relation to the peculiar conditions of the Ottoman court in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The question whether there existed in the Ottoman case the type of court jester who was able to criticize and mock the monarch is discussed in the thesis to display the nature of dwarfs’ and mutes’ role as the sultan’s boon companions. On the symbolic level, especially dwarfs were kept as a mark of royalty, and mutes ensured the ceremonial silence around the semi-sacred sovereign. In daily life, they entertained the sultan, actively took part in the communication within the court and with outside, and penetrated into state affairs in informal ways. Mutes, serving in confidential meetings and strangling princes and officials upon the sultan’s order, constituted a uniquely Ottoman variant of the tradition of keeping disabled people at courts. The thesis points at the indications that especially eunuch dwarfs and mutes increased their power and wealth thanks to their contacts in and out of the palace at the time of the ascendancy of the imperial harem, discussing how they entered the discourse of decline as a source of concern and complaint. The Transformation of the Ottoman State into an Empire, demonstrated at the example of Grand Vizier Mahmud Pasha’s life and accomplishments The following seminar paper deals with Grand Vizier Mahmud Pasha’s life and the processes that turned an Ottoman principality into the Ottoman Empire. Starting with Sultan Mehmed’s II appointment in 1444, important practic- es such as the nomination of a grand vizier changed significantly. Moreover, Mehmed II built a new palace which reflected the new imperial self-percep- tion, a new code of law was installed, and the empire was centralised. All these developments become especially visible in the life of Grand Vizier Mahmud Pasha Angelovic. The paper examines secondary literature as well as contem- porary sources of Kritobolous and Ibn Khaldun. Sources on Mahmud Pasha’s life are rare and need to be analysed with caution as his posthumous legend influenced the production of literature about his life. 1.     Early Modern Women: An Interdisciplinary Journal 2011, vol. 6 Before the Odalisque: Renaissance Representations of Elite Ottoman Women Heather Madar he much-mythologized harem of the Ottoman sultans occupied a Tcentral place in European Orientalist thought for centuries.1 The harem, presented as an exotic world of forbidden sexuality inhabited by compliant yet sexually voracious women, appears in literature, art, and travel writing. While the most famous expressions of this harem fixa- tion date from later centuries,2 a focus on the harem as libidinous zone is demonstrably present in written sources from the sixteenth century. Yet an exploration of sixteenth-century European images turns up a surprising dearth of imagery in this vein. While Renaissance art lacks the languid odalisques or detailed views of the physical environment of the sultan’s harem familiar from later works, a series of largely overlooked representa- tions of elite Ottoman women do exist. Dating from the mid-sixteenth century, these images feature imagined portraits of sultanas — elite women such as Ottoman princesses, the sultan’s mother (valide sultan), or the sul- tan’s preferred concubine (haseki).3 Hurrem, the wife of sultan Süleyman, and his daughter Mihrimah appear most frequently in this genre. Yet strik- ing differences are immediately evident between their depiction and later, more familiar, views of the harem and harem women. The women shown in the Renaissance tradition were members of the sultan’s harem, yet they are not shown within a harem setting, nor do the images make reference to it. Although they are visually marked as Other, largely through the atten- tion given to their exotic dress, they are also presented as women who are of interest as individuals, possessing status and political significance.

Bu süreçte, bu iliĢkilerin Said‟in iddia ettiğinden daha da karmaĢık olduğunu ve, tekerrür eden olumsuz imajlara rağmen Osmanlılar hakkında, Avrupa‟da yaygın Ģekilde birçok olumlu görüĢlerin de olduğunu gözler önüne sermeyi ve dolayısıyla yalnızca Batı cephesinin Osmanlılar hakkındaki önyargıları değil, aynı zamanda Doğu‟da Batı-karĢıtı fikirleri de aĢmayı hedeflenmektedir. Bunun için ise, öncelikle bu dönemin ve politik aktörlerinin önemini göstermek için “Kadınlar Saltanatı” yakından incelenecektir.

This work of ethics was originally written in Persian in 1494-5 under the title, Ahlâk-ı Muhsinî (Morals of Muhsin), by Hüseyin Vâiz Kâşifî, a renowned Timurid scholar and intellectual. This work of ethics was dedicated to the Timurid ruler, Hüseyin Baykara (r. 1469-1506), but the main adressee was his son Ebu‘l-Muhsin Mirza. In around 1610, Ahmed I ordered a translation of this Persian work into Ottoman Turkish, a task which was completed, with some critical additions, in 1612 by Hocazâde Abdülaziz Efendi (d. 1618), the fourth son of the famous Hoca Sadeddin Efendi (d. 1599). Overall, this thesis is an attempt to provide a critical examination of Ahlâk-ı Sultân Ahmedî particularly with respect to the question of how such a translated book on ethics was used as a tool to create as well as to legitimize a powerful image of the Ottoman sultan at a time of crisis and change in the Ottoman imperial and dynastic establishment.

With the success of the Turkish television series Magnificent Century (2011-14), which focused on the reign of Süleyman the Magnificent (also known as The Lawgiver) and his family, there had never been a better time for a new assessment of the concubine Hurrem Sultan, also known as Roxelana. Roxelana rose to become the first, and only, wife of an Ottoman sultan for centuries, achieving the status of queen, previously unknown in the empire.

RUSSELL * INTRODUCTION: A "MONDE RENVERSE" Between its foundation by Sultan Mehemmed the Conqueror (reg. 1451-81) and its abandonment in the middle of the nineteenth century, the Saray, the Palace in Constantinople, served for more than 400 years not only as the residence of the Ottoman Sultans and their royal household, but also as the seat oftheir imperial rule. More than that, it determined the imprint of Ottoman society. The immense enclosure on what is called the Seraglio Point, surrounded by impressive fortifications, consisted of an "outer" B7riun and an "inner" Enderiin section within a series ofcourtyards. The Bflriun, which included the D7viin or Imperial Council Chamber, was of necessity partly open to the outside; the Enderiun or inner palace, separated by a second line of walls, contained the private apartments of the Sultan, the Imperial Household, the Harem, and the Pavilion of the Holy Mantle, as well as the special Palace School.' Because of the strict privacy beyond what was called the "Gate of Felicity", the inner palace was inaccessible. It was perhaps justifiably referred to by some historians as the "forbidden city".2 As late as 1822, Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall, Secretary to the Austrian Embassy in Constantinople, and the author of the monumental Geschichte des osmanischen Reiches, could still declare with the utmost confidence that no Europeans except physicians had ever entered it and that no one had ever described it.3 Although von Hammer was referring specifically to the Harem, it could have been said for the whole inner palace.
