    ASIATIC, VOLUME 10, NUMBER 1, JUNE 2016 From Islamic Feminism to Radical Feminism: Roquiah Sakhawat Hossein1 to Taslima Nasrin Niaz Zaman2 Independent University, Bangladesh Abstract This paper examines four women writers who have contributed through their writings and actions to the awakening of women in Bangladesh: Roquiah Sakhawat Hossein, Sufia Kamal, Jahanara Imam and Taslima Nasrin. The first three succeeded in making a space for themselves in the Bangladesh tradition and carved a special niche in Bangladesh. All three of them were writers in different genres – poetry, prose, fiction – with the last best known for her diary about 1971. While these iconic figures contributed towards women’s empowerment or people’s rights in general, Taslima Nasrin is the most radically feminist of the group. However, while her voice largely echoes in the voices of young Bangladeshi women today – often unacknowledged – she has been shunned by her own country. The paper attempts to explain why, while other women writers have also said what Taslima Nasrin has, she alone is ostracised. The medieval mind which was governed by superstition had a release from. these enlightened influences. During this century Europe witnBssed a far-reaching change in the political, socio-economic and cultural life of its people. People started to cherish individual liberty and equal rights. This enlightened movement of thought was specially revealed by a class of rationalist Philosophers and thinkers like Montesquieu (1689-1755), Voltaire (1694-1778), Rousseau (1712-.778), Denis Diderot and his friend D'Alembert. They exposed in I heir writings the defects of the existing institutions and protested against cruel and irrational customs of the society.. This thought process not only influenced the .European middle class intellectuals, Indian Socio-1 cultural and religious thoughts also underwent a transformation as; well, as a result Of this western contact, it gave birth to. irresistible forces of socle-cultural and religious ’ reforms in the first half of the nineteenth century. Western thought found its first 2 explosion in Bengal and a leading feature of this wa^e of thought was its active concern for the regeneration of the society and the emancipation of women. Women's issues (Sati, widow remarriage, KulirTsm, Furdah, ■ education etc.) formed a central point of the nineteenth century reform movement in Bengal, led by Rammohan, Vidyasagar, II Keshabchandra Sen, AkShOy kumar Dutta, The Tagores and other Brahmo reformers.     Bangladesh Studies O Level (7094) Pilot Textbook Topic 1 (a) Influence of major cultural figures Purpose of this chapter This chapter covers Topic 1 of the five History & Culture Topics in the syllabus for the Cambridge GCE Ordinary Level Bangladesh Studies (syllabus 7094, Paper 1). It introduces candidates to: the influence of major cultural figures (Topic 1a) a general background of key developments in Bengali language, literature, art, architecture, folk culture and other cultural practices that shape the culture of Bangladesh (Topic 1b). Teachers should note that the material provided here should form the basis of what is needed to answer the compulsory question in the examination.     Home (‘Griha’) Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain Translated and introduced by Mohammad A. Quayum Introduction This essay was first published in a Bengali magazine, Nabanur, in October 1904 (Bengali calendar: Ashwin 1311). It was republished in Antapur in January 1905, and included in Rokeya’s first collection of essays, Motichur (Sweet Globules), Vol. I, in 1907. The essay expresses the same sentiment as in Rokeya’s earlier essays, such as ‘Istrijatir Abanati’ (Woman’s Downfall)1 and ‘Ardhangi’ (The Female-half). In these previous essays she fiercely criticises the Indian patriarchal system for depriving women of all their rights and opportunities in society, and for wilfully subjugating them to a law of male primacy. In this essay, she carries the argument further to suggest that women’s subjugation has also rendered them homeless. Home is a place, Rokeya argues, where one finds rest, happiness and peace. But because Indian women have to constantly depend on the mercy and vagary of men, and have to spend their life in humouring their ‘masters’ and ‘keepers’ rather than in finding their own happiness, they can never be truly at home. To them, home is a like a ‘prison’. ‘For those who live in subjugation and do not have the right to consider the house of their “keeper” as their own residence, home is like a prison. For one who is not happy in family life, and dares not to consider herself a member of the family, home cannot be a place of peace,’ Rokeya proffers in a blistering argument. This despicable condition of subjection and servility applies to most Indian women notwithstanding their age, religion or class.

Born as Syed Abdul Mannan, he assumed the pen name Ashoke Syed at the debut in literatur in 1960s. He published more than 150 titles to his credit during his lifetime. His works on poet Jibanananda Das and Kazi Nazrul Islam are not only seminal but also monumental in form, content and quality. <b>Life</b> He was born in a village called Jalalpur, on the rivulet Ichamati, in the district of Chabbish Paragana, in West Bengal of undivided India. That was 1943, the year of great famine. In 1946, just before the partition of British Indian, a lethal Hindu-Muslim riot took place and forced many Muslims to leave West Bengal to settle in East Bengal, now Bangladesh. A less discussed but equally fearsome riot took place in 1950 that drove the family of Mannan Syed from West Bengal and to settle in Dhaka of then East Pakistan, now Bangladesh. He lost his motherland for ever and always felt like a refugee. They first lived in Gopibagh of Dhaka town. Shortly his father bought a piece of land on the Green Road, formerly called Kuli Road.

(Received: 02 October 2017; Accepted: 18 November 2017) Kazi Nazrul Islam, the national poet of Bangladesh, popularly known as Nazrul-the rebel poet, is undoubtedly one who may rightly be called as one of the greatest “poets of people” of the world. He was the first poet in Bengali literature that used extensive Arabic and Persian words to express his views and to create a Muslim renaissance within the whole Bengali nation. He was a multi-lingual poet. That’s why we see huge Arabic, Persian, Hindi, Sanskrit and Urdu words, even sentences in almost everywhere of his literature. This article is about the Persian words that Nazrul had used in his poetry. Though the majority of his poems consists of more or less Persian words, in this article, we discussed five of his poems named Shat-il- Arab, Moharram, Kamal Pasha, Qorbani and the 12th Fateha that has most Persian words comparatively.
