Jacksonville, Florida BEST EDUCATIONAL PRACTICES FOR SERVING STUDENTS WITH AUTISM IN SECONDARY SETTINGS Presented by Cynthia Pearl, Ph.D and the University of Central Florida’s Project ASD demonstration site mentor teachers Funded by: PEPSA, UF/Jacksonville CARD, FDLRS/Crown, and Duval County Public Schools June 17, 2010 University of North Florida - University Center 9:00 am to 4:00 pm 12000 Alumni Drive, Jacksonville, FL 32224 Registration begins at 8:15 am (Parking is free at the university center) About the Presenters Cynthia Pearl, Ph.D., is the Co-Principal Investigator and Project Director for two personnel preparation grants through the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs. She has directed Project ASD, Preparing Teachers to Work with Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, at the University of Central Florida since the fall of 2003, and Project SPD, Special Educator Preparation in Severe/Profound Disabilities, since the fall of 2007. She assisted in the development of UCF’s Graduate Certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorders and the Graduate Certificate in Severe or Profound Disabilities. She has over 25 years teaching experience with students with disabilities. Dr. Pearl is a published author and has given presentations on topics related to teacher preparation and evidence-based best practices for working with students with ASD at state and national conferences. Presenting with Dr. Pearl are the University of Central Florida’s Project ASD demonstration site mentor teachers: Kathy Meena, Gina Newton, and Kelly George Training Description This workshop will be delivered by UCF’s Project ASD Demonstration Site Mentor Teachers. Experienced secondary school teachers will provide information and resources related to the implementation of evidence-based educational practices for their students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Participants will be provided with practical hands on training focusing on community, school and classroom implementation of six components of effective educational programming for students with ASD including, individualized supports for students and families, systematic instruction, comprehensible and structured learning environments, specialized curriculum content, family involvement, and a functional approach to problem behavior. Exit right onto SR-9A E (Jax Beaches). Continue on SR-9A, which will turn into SR Register online at 9A N. UNF is approximately 9 miles ahead and on the right (past J www.doepartnership.org/training.asp Turner Butler Blvd). Exit to your right to merge onto UNF Drive.
