Evanilde Bekkout ii ETHNIC COMMUNITIES, IDENTITY AND BELONGING: AN AUTOETHNOGRAPHY Evanilde Bekkout Master of Arts 2015 Immigration and Settlement Studies Ryerson University Abstract This paper presents an autoethnographic analysis of identity and belonging. I describe some of my own experiences as a member of the Brazilian and Portuguese communities in order to propose that multicultural individuals need to navigate among the many identities they relate to, which make them live at the margins of cultural groups rather than limiting them to one exclusive culture. I examine the period I lived in the Brazilian community and why I do not fit there; and why I fit in the Portuguese community although I do not feel that I fully belong there. Then, I argue that a multicultural individual needs to live at the margins of cultural communities in order to move among different communities; and conclude that more work on multicultural identity is needed to understand how multicultural individuals handle belonging without identifying themselves with specific groups. The sequence of personal experiences presents a progressive development of identity and belonging culminating with an argument that this project can be enlarged into a qualitative study of identity and belonging in ethnic groups to examine multicultural identity in ethnographic studies. Although I am not a classic writer, I could not have developed this project if my supervisor Dr. Vappu Tyyskä had not looked beyond the surface of an idea and discovered sufficient material to transform the idea into a palpable project. After that, she continued to guide and support me with valuable tips to transform this paper into a potential source of research to those who are interested to study more about identity and belonging among ethnic groups. When I was visiting Chicago, a woman asked me where I had come from and I automatically said Canada. She did not accept my answer and we started discussing about citizenship, until I gave the answer she expected: I was born and raised in Brazil; therefore, I could not be Canadian because my mother tongue was Portuguese, not English. In many occasions when I was in Britain, people were satisfied when I said I came from Canada. They did not argue or debate about accents and citizenships; they accepted my answer without challenging it. This shows how people’s curiosity about these matters depends on the context. In Canada, identity and belonging are greatly discussed, and many people sound confused when questioned about their ethnic and cultural identities. Before going any further, it is important to say that my contact with Canadians is limited to the Great Toronto Area (GTA) and to information from books, lectures, and the media. The discussion of identities seems to have a link to the sense of belonging individuals have within their ethnic and cultural communities, independent of their actual immigrant status. According to Statistics Canada (2014, para. 2), the ethnocultural characteristics of the population are categorized according to “origins of various waves of immigrants who have settled in Canada over time,” and analyzes the Canadian population based on its generation status, which refers to “whether people are first, second or third generation or more in Canada.” The first generation refers to those who are born outside of Canada; the second generation refers to those who are born in Canada, but have at least one parent who is non-Canadian-born; and the third generation or more refers to those who are born in Canada, and their parents are also born in Canada (Statistics Canada, 1 2014). The 2011 Census shows that 22 percent of the Canadian population is first generation, which means that 78 percent are Canadian-born (Statistics Canada, 2014). Perhaps these terms first, second and third generations have something to do with my interpretation of people being confused, since I relate ethnic identity to nationality: I was born in Brazil, therefore I am Brazilian. You are born in Canada, therefore, you are Canadian. This concept made sense to me when I lived in Brazil, but since the concepts of identity and belonging are discussed under the ideology of multiculturalism in Canada, they are more complicated to grasp; hence my desire to embark on studying these concepts in depth. In multicultural cities, such as Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, many people are asked about their ethnic identification, which makes them aware of belonging to a specific group. Some say they belong to a minority ethnic group, others say they belong to a mainstream ethnic group, and still others say they belong to both or to neither of them (Berry & Sam, 1997). This fluctuation of identity and belonging is arguably accepted in Canada, which can be seen through the government endorsement of multiculturalism policy since 1971, which led to the creation of the Multiculturalism Act of 1985. The Act recognizes and promotes “the cultural and racial diversity of Canadian society and acknowledges the freedom of all members of Canadian society to preserve, enhance and share their cultural heritage;” as well as encourages “the understanding that multiculturalism is a fundamental characteristic of the Canadian heritage and identity and that it provides an invaluable resource in the shaping of Canada’s future” (Government of Canada, Nov. 25, 2014,

In addition to problems connected with the study of transnational names (i.e., names of geographical features extending across the territory of several countries), there are also problems in eth- nically mixed areas. These are examined in greater detail in the case of place names in Slovenia and neighboring countries. On the one hand, this raises the question of the nature of endonyms on the territory of Slovenia in the languages of officially recognized minorities and their respective linguistic communities, and their relationship to exonyms in the languages of neighboring countries. First, we propose that the position of not knowing allows formulating research questions that balanced the power relationship among the researcher and child participants living on the streets. Then, we present a new methodology of joint construction of life stories with adolescents in conflict with the law, who are deprived from freedom. Finally, we exhibit how social constructionism led to the recognition of multiple voices in the study of social support with migrant women in Bolivia. Introduction This article is the result of a seminar on social constructionist epistemology, conducted as part of our doctoral training. As a product of this seminar, our investigations were profoundly transformed, allowing us to find new directions and generate new findings. In this sense, we present three methods of data collection in the field of psychology, with populations in situations of social vulnerability. These methodologies were motivated by the principles of social constructionism. We hope this contribution will inspire other doctoral students who are beginning the journey. First, we present a theoretical review of the main ideas of this epistemology, applied to research. Then, we describe and explain the basic premises of the social constructionism research in the field of psychology and finally we present three types of data collection methodologies.

    The Making and Unmaking of Ethnic Boundaries: A Multilevel Process Theory1 Andreas Wimmer University of California, Los Angeles Primordialist and constructivist authors have debated the nature of ethnicity “as such” and therefore failed to explain why its charac- teristics vary so dramatically across cases, displaying different de- grees of social closure, political salience, cultural distinctiveness, and historical stability. The author introduces a multilevel process theory to understand how these characteristics are generated and trans- formed over time. The theory assumes that ethnic boundaries are the outcome of the classificatory struggles and negotiations between actors situated in a social field. Three characteristics of a field—the institutional order, distribution of power, and political networks— determine which actors will adopt which strategy of ethnic boundary making. The author then discusses the conditions under which these negotiations will lead to a shared understanding of the location and meaning of boundaries. The nature of this consensus explains the particular characteristics of an ethnic boundary. A final section iden- tifies endogenous and exogenous mechanisms of change. For this purpose first the theories of ethnic mobilization are presented with a thorough assessment of their strengths and weaknesses in explaining the selected cases. A brief historical background of the minority issues in Ukraine is also provided for a comprehensive account on the causal effect of the minority radicalization and the nation-building as well as the time of their occurrence. Finally the thesis examines the behavior of the states through the lens of the ethnic bargaining model. The model suggests, that the kin state behavior is the key for minority behavior and the latter selects its step on the basis of the perceived leverage. If there is no outside support, the minority is not likely to radicalize its demands. On the other hand, if the minority is certain of outside support, it will radicalize despite the host state is non-repressive. The thesis argues that in the ongoing Ukrainian war the external kin states use the ethnicities inhabiting the territory for strategic reasons, and the minorities respond to differential levels of kin state support by radicalizing or moderating their demands.

    Nation-Building and Ethnicity1 There are many terms for defining human groups: they emerged in various societies with different histories and cultural traditions at different times. The meanings of these terms became more confused when they were translated into different languages. In English, there are terms to describe human groups such as “race,” “tribe,” “clan,” “nation,” “people,” “country,” “state,” etc2. Compared with these terms, “ethnic group” and “ethnicity” only appeared recently in the 20th century (Glazer and Moynihan, 1975: 1). These terms emerged in west Europe, the countries initiating the industrial revolution, then were introduced into other parts of the world accompanied by the western merchants, priests, and armies. These Europeans introduced their political and social systems as well as their ideology and values to other people by cultural influence or military force. “Nation-state” was the form of political entity first appearing in Western Europe, then adopted by colonies when they sought independence. “Nation” became an important term in international politics. “Nation-building” became a widespread political process among Asian, African and American countries, together with the powerful “nationalist” movement. At the beginning of the 21st century, there were about 200 independent countries around the world that were recognized by the international society (the United Nations). An important phenomenon is that political boundaries have not always been drawn according to human group inhabitance but often, oppositely, have been affected by wars, treaties, and international powers. Therefore, there are many different human groups living in the same countries; populations originally from the same group now living on both sides of a boundary.

New terms approved by the Working Group between 2002 and 2006 Since the Eighth United Nations Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names, three meetings of the Working Group on Terminology have been held, viz. in 2002, 2004 and 2006 Following the last resolution concerning the Working Group on Terminology, adopted by the Eighth Conference (VIII/3, see above) the following terms and their definitions were proposed by experts, discussed by the Working Group at its meetings and approved for inclusion in the Glossary. In the cases of oronym and ethnonym only the definitions were changed. The number before each term indicates the term in the Glossary after (or, if in parentheses, instead of) which the respective new term should be inserted. 019 authorized name – see name, official. 317 standard name – see name, standardized. 118 geoname – informal alternative for geographical name. 118 geonym – see name, geographical. 345 transboundary name – name of a geographical feature extending over two or more political entities, e.g. rivers and mountain ranges.
