RESEARCHING HUGUENOT SETTLERS IN IRELAND1 VIVIEN COSTELLO PREAMBLE This study is a genealogical research guide to French Protestant refugee settlers in Ireland, c. 1660–1760. It reassesses Irish Huguenot settlements in the light of new findings and provides a background historical framework. A comprehensive select bibliography is included. While there is no formal listing of manuscript sources, many key documents are cited in the footnotes. This work covers only French Huguenots; other Protestant Stranger immigrant groups, such as German Palatines and the Swiss watchmakers of New Geneva, are not featured. INTRODUCTION Protestantism in France2 In mainland Europe during the early sixteenth century, theologians such as Martin Luther and John Calvin called for an end to the many forms of corruption that had developed within the Roman Catholic Church. When their demands were ignored, they and their followers ceased to accept the authority of the Pope and set up independent Protestant churches instead. Bitter religious strife throughout much of Europe ensued. In France, a Catholic-versus-Protestant civil war was waged intermittently throughout the second half of the sixteenth century, followed by ever-increasing curbs on Protestant civil and religious liberties.3 The majority of French Protestants, nicknamed Huguenots,4 were followers of Calvin.

  • The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers
THE LIST of CHURCH OF IRELAND PARISH REGISTERS A Colour-coded Resource Accounting For What Survives; Where It Is; & With Additional Information of Copies, Transcripts and Online Indexes SEPTEMBER 2021 The List of Parish Registers The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers was originally compiled in-house for the Public Record Office of Ireland (PROI), now the National Archives of Ireland (NAI), by Miss Margaret Griffith (1911-2001) Deputy Keeper of the PROI during the 1950s. Griffith’s original list (which was titled the Table of Parochial Records and Copies) was based on inventories returned by the parochial officers about the year 1875/6, and thereafter corrected in the light of subsequent events - most particularly the tragic destruction of the PROI in 1922 when over 500 collections were destroyed. A table showing the position before 1922 had been published in July 1891 as an appendix to the 23rd Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records Office of Ireland. In the light of the 1922 fire, the list changed dramatically – the large numbers of collections underlined indicated that they had been destroyed by fire in 1922. The List has been updated regularly since 1984, when PROI agreed that the RCB Library should be the place of deposit for Church of Ireland registers. Under the tenure of Dr Raymond Refaussé, the Church’s first professional archivist, the work of gathering in registers and other local records from local custody was carried out in earnest and today the RCB Library’s parish collections number 1,114. The Library is also responsible for the care of registers that remain in local custody, although until they are transferred it is difficult to ascertain exactly what dates are covered.

Introduction This feasibility study and consultation was commissioned from Barnardo’s with funding from the Public Health Agency, by Resurgam Development Trust representing community and youth organisations in disadvantaged communities in the City of Lisburn, including Old Warren, Hilden, Hillhall, Tonagh, Knockmore and Lagan Valley. It involved consultations with a very wide range of community organisations, schools and professional agencies working in Lisburn. It also included research into: the needs of the target areas; the desired outcomes for children and young people; the evidence and arguments for taking an early intervention approach to the issues; the public policy context and the extent that it might support an early intervention approach; and the evidence of the potential impact of delivering particular proven programmes in the target areas of Lisburn.

L.O.L. 471, L.O.L. 227 & Dr. Arthur Mussen - a journey through the years The front of the current Lodge banner for L.O.L. 227 There are relatively few records from the early 1800’s in relation to Orangeism in Glenavy. The following references are from the Belfast Newsletter. Friday 17th July 1829.Glenavy. “On Sunday in Glenavy Church an appropriate discourse was delivered to a large body of Orangemen by the Rev. E. Cupples. The church was very much crowded, but the utmost decorum prevailed. There were present the Hon. Colonel and Mrs. Pakenham and family, the Rev. R. Carleton, Captain Armstrong, S. Whittle Esq. &c.” A report appeared in the newspaper on Friday 21st August 1829 of the funeral of a local Orangeman. “Of consumption, on 31st ult. Mr. George Green, jun. Ballinacoy, parish of Glenavy, in the 20 year of his age. Kind and amiable in his disposition, and possessed of much innocent vivacity and harmless merriment, he not only procured the esteem and affection of those who came within the circle of his acquaintance, but his society was always solicited by the humorous and cheerful in the neighbourhood. Whenever he presented himself, melancholy was obliged to withdraw. He having been, for some time, an Orangeman, about 11 or 12 lodges or bodies of that truly loyal part of the 25 community assembled at the funeral to pay the last tribute of regret to their departed brother. What is very remarkable, although the procession that accompanied his remains to the grave was considered to be the most numerous that has entered Glenavy church-yard for a great number of years - yet, general solemnity and decorum prevailed, that there was scarcely an individual present who did not seem to labour under a sort of regret and concern.” There are references to the office holders in the Glenavy District on Tuesday 29th September, 1829.

The new Council covers an area of nearly 200 square miles and Lisburn & represents seven District Electoral Areas namely: Lisburn South, Lisburn North, Downshire West, Downshire East, Castlereagh South, Castlereagh Castlereagh East and Killultagh. The new Council formation brings together two areas with long and proud historical traditions. Lisburn was founded in the early 17th century and its name in Irish is Lios na gCearbhach or Lisnagarvey, which means the ‘fort of the gamesters’ and today many local City Council sports clubs pay tribute by still carrying the title Lisnagarvey in their name. The name Castlereagh comes from ‘Caislen Riabhach’ or ‘Grey Castle’ of the O’Neill’s, which once perched splendidly in the heart of the Castlereagh Hills. The powerful O’Neill Clan inhabited ‘Grey Castle’ known as the ‘The Eagle’s Nest’ due to its position in the hills from the mid-1300s but was lost to the family in the early 17th century. An excursion across the new council area can bring you up close and personal with the Normans, Ulster-Scots, World War II, dolmens, historic churches, forts, the Industrial Revolution and into the present day.
