Born in Băileşti, in Oltenia, he attended the Carol I High School. He later played at the Craiova Theatre, then at the Small Theatre, Nottara Theatre, Comedy Theatre and the National Theatre Bucharest, being also a professor at the Academy of Theatre and Film in Bucharest. T he "Happy Moments" with Nea Marin (a comical and ingenious character that portrays an amazing archetypal Oltenian peasant) cheered up our childhood. He was teaching us that it lies in our power to see life friendly and to choose a cheerful and open way when tell a story. "It's a trait of character of the Romanian people to make fun by themselves, sometimes even in trouble.“ Amza Pellea "I am convinced that any even t may be told to squeeze tears or laughter.“ Amza Pellea In 1981, with "Uncle Marin, the Billionaire" he proved that he could play any role. In this most known Romanian comedy he played 2 characters: a comical authentic peasant "Nea Marin Juvete" who calmly resolves things like in his village and an American billionaire "Mr. Juvet" who comes in Romania and has to do with press, luxury life and with "bad guys" who kidnapped his daughter. "An actor should play any role and be credible as a ruler or a peasant, as a weak man or a strong man, as a thief or a judge.“ – Amza Pellea His biggest desire was to transform his hometown, Băileşti into "The Romanian Capital of Satire and Humor". His dream was accomplished with the support of the local leaders at that time by organizing in 1979, 1980 and 1982 three editions of The Humor and Satire Festival "From a Joke to Another". After his death the name of the festival was changed to "The Amza Pellea Humor Festival ". We shall never forget the natural and simple way he kneeled down and prayed for gratitude for people gathered in Băileşti at the first edition of the Festival. "I kneel before this great audience. Part of my heart will always love my native land and the people I grew up with.“ Amza Pellea He sincerely and dearly loved his people wit no limits, beyond personal sacrifice. This love lasts over time in his native town from Oltenia region, and those who outlive him (his humorous definition about them was "Oltenians are like pepper in the food") remember with love both the Man and the Actor. Recently a memorial house was opened, his statue stands in front of the “Amza Pellea Community Centre” of Băileşti, named in his honour. In April 2011 the people of Băileşti remembered his birth by offering his memory a star on the Romanian Walk of Fame. He was a genius who left his mark on Romanian culture and cinematography and will be forever associated with great Romanian leaders because of how passionately he acted as Decebalus, the Dacian King in "The Dacians" (1966) or Voivode Basarab from "The Big Tailors of Wallachia" or Michael the Brave, Prince of Wallachia in "Michael the Brave" (1970). He was also noted for the historical characters he played, such as Vlădică Hariton from “Tudor of Vladimiri”, as well as for playing in “Tudor”, “The Upraising”, “The Outlaws”, or “The Column”. In a 2006 poll conducted by Romanian TV to identify the "greatest Romanians of all time", Amza Pellea came in the 60th. The Dacians The Immortals Michael the Brave "Michael the Brave" is one of the most viewed Romanian movies, distributed worldwide by Columbia Pictures. This film was nominated for Golden Award at the Moscow International Film Festival in 1971 and at the Beaume Historical Film Festival in 1974. HBO had to broadcast this film on December 1st 2000. Other movies he played in: “The Catfish" (1964) , "Sunday Father" (1975), "Impossible Love" (1983) (many of them having Sergiu Nicolaescu as a movie director). In 1977 he won the "Best actor" prize at the Moscow International Film Festival - for the role played in "The Doom" (1976). In "Then I Sentenced Them All to Death" (1971) he brilliantly played the role of Ipu, the village idiot, who lives with simplicity the last days of the German occupation. He loved with passion theatre, acting with outstanding performances in any TV, theater or film productions, succeeding so finely to capture human behave, walk and talk. An actor should have "an open heart, perpetual sensitivity able to register any pain and human suffering, as a highest precision seismograph.” Amza Pellea During his life he played at The National Theatre Craiova, The Small Theatre, The Nottara Theatre, The Comedy Theatre and The National Theatre Bucharest, being also a professor

  • Negotiation of the Haiduc in Ceaușescu's Romania
Honor among Thieves: Negotiation of the Haiduc in Ceaușescu’s Romania (1968-1982) THESIS Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Justin Thomas Ciucevich, B.A. Graduate Program in Slavic and East European Studies The Ohio State University 2017 Thesis Committee: Theodora Dragostinova, Advisor David Hoffmann Adela Lechintan-Siefer Copyrighted by Justin Thomas Ciucevich 2017 Abstract In Nicolae Ceaușescu’s Romania, the haiduc enjoyed an elevated status in the national pantheon alongside the greatest rulers and revolutionaries of the past – celebrated through film, songs, literature, and architecture. Romania’s producers of culture (particularly privileged intellectuals working within the highly-centralized state) used the haiduc figure as an embodiment of the ideals espoused by the regime – a protector of national identity; a guarantor of social justice and economic equality; defender against foreign oppression; an embodiment of paternity, masculinity, fraternity, and morality; and a champion of righteous revolutionary principles. However, the haiduc also served a practical purpose for the regime. The narratives of the two most renowned haiduc figures – Baba Novac (1530-1601) and Iancu Jianu (1787-1842) – were used, especially, to vilify ethnic minorities and the large peasant population in Romania. This thesis focuses on how these two figures were used most malleably in order to maximize public displays of national chauvinism via flamboyant glorifications and representations. ii Vita 2004............................................................... The multitude of tourism products, “constructed” with a basis containing the resources of a tourism destination, on the one hand, and from the anticipation of the tourists’ needs and desires, on the other hand, is “hosted” in a complex space, which transcends the spatial and temporal coordinates. Therefore, it is necessary that the marketing specialists know and subsequenty use the components of the “destination’s universe” in the laborious process of constructing tourism products with specific, authentic elements, constituting points of contact between the targeted consumer segments and the nature and culture of the destination itself. The purpose of this paper is to identify, within a quantitative research, those specific elements of the region which can “collaborate” on developing every structured tourism product, comprising both tangible and intangible elements, functional and symbolic, which can be offered to as many market segments as possible, through planned activities of destination marketing, yet entirely complying with its identity. • The Hero-‐Mirror Mechanism
CULTURAL DISCOURSES IN CEAUŞIST ROMANIA: THE HERO-MIRROR MECHANISM FILIP SEBASTIAN BOICU, BA. MA. Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy July 2014 1 2 ABSTRACT Cultural discourses in Ceauşist Romania: The Hero-Mirror Mechanism This thesis is concerned with main cultural discourses of the second phase of Communism in Romania (1964-1989), period largely identical with that of Ceauşescu’s rule. A secondary aim of the thesis is to look at the post-1989 continuations of these publicly influential discourses with the aim of understanding how the educational system (HE, in particular) is positioned in relation to the cultural domain. With regard to the Communist period, the main assertion of the thesis is that analysis of these discourses reveals an underlying cultural mechanism equivalent with a central mode of governance employed by the Communist party. According to this assertion, the mission of this cultural mechanism, with origins in Lenin’s drastic distinction between the party and the proletariat and in the idea that the party must bestow consciousness on the proletariat, is to create and regulate positive avatars (heroes imbued with the best of humanity) for each social category so as to fulfill and safeguard the aims of the Party. For this reason, this device has been entitled the hero-mirror mechanism. The device has also been linked with religion and theology. This perspective has found that the mirror-mechanism corresponds to the notion of “imago Dei,” and its axes to the notions of “kenosis” and “imitatio Dei.” The assessment of these cultural discourses via the mirror-mechanism results in three dimensions of research, each with its own universes of investigation, and each with its own findings.

  • The Evolution of the Milicier Film Genre in Communist Romania
STUDIA UBB DRAMATICA, LXII, 2, 2017, p. 161 - 171 (Recommended Citation) DOI:10.24193/subbdrama.2017.2.09 The Evolution of the Milicier Film Genre in Communist Romania ION INDOLEAN1 Abstract2: In order to observe the manner in which the image of the Romanian militiaman is perpetuated throughout the movies produced during Nicolae Ceauşescu’s regime (1965-1989) we will analyze the most important detective films of that period. This will allow us to recognize a series of characterological and professional attributes present in the protagonists of these narratives which claimed to have come from reality. All of these heroes are shrewd, tenacious and well-intentioned because the official propaganda wanted to deliver a certain beautified image of the Romanian agent, about whom these films suggested having the mental and physical capabilities to be successful against any kind of villain and therefore being able to protect his country with a great sense of duty and commitment. Keywords: Cultural politics, Film, Nicolae Ceauşescu, Communism, Espionage, Industry, Censorship, Propaganda. “Milicier” defines the type of police films with law enforcement made during Nicolae Ceauşescu’s regime. The term is a combination of the “policier” cinematographic genre and the Romanian noun “milițian” which in communist countries defined the now globally used “policeman” (en) / “policier” (fr) / “poliţist” (ro) / “poliziotto” (it) etc.3 1. Faculty of Theatre and Television, Babeş-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania [email protected]. 2. Translated into English by Ilinca Hărnuţ. 3. I arrived at this term intuitively, but then I found it used by the researcher Bogdan Jitea, in his unpublished doctoral thesis entitled Dizidenţă şi conformism în cinematografia regimului Ceauşescu (Bucharest, 2015), where he had the historian Lucian Boia as his scientific supervisor So I can say that I invented the term milicier instinctively, without knowing that someone else had previously thought of it Because I am not the first to drive it into public space, I need to specify this.

Celebrul actor s-a nascut in Bailesti (Dolj), intr-o familie de tarani olteni instariti. Studiile primare si gimnaziale le-a facut in orasul natal.
