    On a day in 2000, at a certain pub, the three creators of The Big O got together and to discuss their passionate thoughts…! Kazuyoshi Katayama The director of The Big O, he has also worked on other anime including Sentimental Journey and Giant Robo. An established pro of robot dramas. Keiichi Sato The Big O character and mecha designer/supervisor. He has worked with director Kazuyoshi Katayama since Giant Robo, and has also worked on the City Hunter TV special. Hitoshi Ariga The Big O manga artist (see inside front cover for more information). The Big O is finally starting to be released on video/DVD. Ariga: I‟d like people who weren‟t able to catch it on TV to take this opportunity to check it out Sato: Even people who dismissed it by just saying “I don‟t have cable.” [The Big O was originally shown in Japan on the Wowow cable channel—Ed.] But I guess that‟s how it is. When you can‟t see it, it‟s sour grapes. Ariga: I was hoping that the manga would help to get people interested. I‟m hoping it‟ll get people to buy the DVDs and videos, so it‟s an important piece of media in that respect. I know that I shouldn‟t stray too far. Sato: Well, we‟re going to keep needing your help. (laughs) Ariga: I‟ll do my best. (laughs) Katayama: Well, I‟d like people to enjoy the world of The Big O by both reading the manga and watching the anime.

    DeepAniNet: Deep NLP-based Representations for a Generalizable Anime Recommender System Stanford CS224N Custom Project Michael Sun Tai Vu Robert Yang MCS Computer Science Computer Science Stanford University Stanford University Stanford University [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] Abstract Traditionally, recommendation systems require a long history of user-item inter- actions in the form of a large preference matrix to perform well, making them impractical without large datasets. We aim to build a successful content-driven rec- ommendation system that takes a hybrid ground between collaborative filtering (CF) approaches based off of a preference matrix, and nearest neighbor approaches based off of self-supervised embeddings. Specifically, we develop a deep learning, NLP- based anime recommender system named DeepAniNet on top of representations of anime shows called anime2vec. We explicitly train our model to reconstruct user-anime relevance scores, for shows with few or zero interactions. Our goal is to demonstrate that deep NLP approaches can extract rich content features to improve both a recommender system’s performance and ability to generalize to new users and anime. We are mentored by Andrew Wang, with no external collaborators or courses that share this project. 1 Introduction Large pretrained models have delivered breakthroughs in areas across NLP, from Question Answering to Machine Translation. They have enabled a new generation of consumer-facing applications. However, recommendation systems are still reliant on large datasets that are unable to be easily collected or found. With smaller datasets, the shortcomings of traditional recommendation systems begin to appear. Hence, we motivate the merits of a content-based approach with the problem of cold start, instances for which few or no interaction history is available (such as new users or added items).

Box 260 DK-4000 Roskildess line 1 [email protected] ABSTRACT The present study looks at the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise and the role of digital games from the conceptual frameworks of transmedia storytelling and the Japanese media mix. We offer a historical account of the development of “the Mobile Suit Gundam” series from a producer´s perspective and show how a combination of convergent and divergent strategies contributed to the success of the series, with a special focus on games. Our case can show some insight into underdeveloped aspects of the theory of transmedial storytelling and the Japanese media mix. Strong recognizable IPs take for example more and more space in the movie box office, and even the Producers Guild of America ratified a new title “transmedia producer” in 2010 1. This trend is by no means unique to the movie industry, as we also detect similar patterns in other media like television, documentaries, comics, games, publishing, music, journalism or sports, in diverse national and transnational contexts (Freeman & Gambarato, 2018). However, transmedia strategies do not always manage to successfully engage their intended audiences; as the problematic reception of a number of works can demonstrate.
