I'm rating this book at three stars based on the artwork of Roger Kupelian, which is gorgeously vibrant; a collection of atmospherically surreal montages. Tankian's poetry, however, strikes me as something that Rik, the People's Poet, might have come up with after dropping out of university. It's not that I disagree Glaring Through Oblivion Tankian's position on the issues raised in his largely political poems, but he's as subtle as a brick through a window I'm rating this book at three stars based on the artwork of Roger Kupelian, which is gorgeously vibrant; a Glaring Through Oblivion of atmospherically surreal montages. It's not that I disagree with Tankian's position on the issues raised in his largely political poems, but he's as subtle as a brick through a window, overly-earnest and Glaring Through Oblivion desperate to show his Glaring Through Oblivion colours. A few neat lines Glaring Through Oblivion, there's a lot of tortuously overwrought imagery, doggerel rhymes and a lurking leavening of lumpen alliteration. I do feel I'm getting a little carried away with my criticism; a lot of work has obviously gone into Tankian's work Anyway, the book has generally good ratings on this and other book reviews sites, perhaps from fans of Tankian's band, System of a Down, or perhaps he's just not my cup of tea and there's a quality to his work I'm missing. Bought on a whim, a roll of the dice that was partially successful, partially a disappointment. Jul 12, Etienne rated Glaring Through Oblivion it was ok. I'm a huge fan of Serj Tankian for his solo career as well as System of a Down. I was disappointed, the rhythm wasn't there. I like and respect his ideas and what it try to pass on but the sonority wasn't what I expected. View all 4 comments. Mar 15, Diogenes rated it it was amazing. This book had both amazing poems and artwork which made it worth Glaring Through Oblivion for me. The poetry was quite Glaring Through Oblivion to 'Cool Gardens' and I felt the same way about them. Some of the poems were not very interesting and I found them quite mediocre. However there were many which made this book enjoyable. This book even showed the inspiration to some of Serj's songs from as far back as System of a Dow This book had both amazing poems and artwork which made it worth reading for me. This book even showed the inspiration to some of Serj's songs from Glaring Through Oblivion far back as System of a Down. One of his poems talked about the generation of bottled water and that line is in the song 'Dreaming'. Aug 06, Zac rated it it was ok. Serj is a great singer, musician, activist, etc. He tries too hard with alliteration and assonance that would work fat better as slam poetry. May 19, Eze Vannucchi rated it it was ok Shelves: owned. It's sad to say but even though this book helps me to fully comprehend some of his lyrics and the artwork is very cool, the first one Cool Gardens was way better. At some point son words or phrases feel quite forced or don't lead anywhere. Nov 07, Shannon Green rated it really liked it. If you were a fan of SOAD you'll enjoy this. N°2 | February 2021 Structures of Genocide: Making Sense of the New War for Nagorno-Karabakh Joel Veldkamp * “Terrorists we’re fighting and we’re never gonna stop The prostitutes who prosecute have failed us from the start Can you see us?” - System of a Down, “Genocidal Humanoidz” On December 10, 2020, Turkey and Azerbaijan held a joint victory parade in Azerbaijan’s capital of Baku. Turkey’s president Tayyib Recep Erdogan and Azerbaijan’s president Ilham Aliyev stood together on a dais in front of twenty Turkish and Azerbaijani flags, as 3,000 members of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces marched by, displaying military hardware captured from their Armenian foes. Military bands played the anthems of the old Ottoman Empire, the Turkish dynasty that ruled much of the Middle East in the name of Islam until World War I. Azerbaijani jets roared over the capital, dropping smoke in the green, blue and red colors of the Azerbaijani flag. Certainly, there was much to celebrate. In forty-four days of brutal combat, Azerbaijani forces reversed the humiliating defeat they experienced at Armenia’s hands in 1994 and recaptured much of the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh. Turkey worked with Azerbaijan hand-in-glove during the war, supplying it with weapons, providing intelligence and air support, and bringing in thousands of battle-hardened fighters from Syria to fight on the ground.1 The victory opened up the possibility that the hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis driven from Armenian-occupied territory in the first Karabakh war, many of whom had lived for decades in squalid camps in Baku and its environs, would be able to go home.2 It was an impressive vindication of the alliance of these two Turkish states, exemplifying their alliance’s motto, “two states, one nation.” But a darker spirit was on display during the parade.

SUGAR - Chorus (Guitar) Words and music by Daron Malakian, Serj Tankian, Shavo Odadjian, and John Dolmayan Copyright©1998 Sony/ATV Tunes LLC and Ddevil Music All Rights Administered by Sony/ATV Music Publishing, 8 Music Square West, Nashville, TN 327203 International Copyright Secured All Rights Reserved System of a Down is the collaboration of four musicians from L.A. that share one relatively unusual characteristic—they are all of Armenian heritage. Serj Tankian (vocals) and Daron Malakian (guitar) met in 1993 as their two bands shared the same rehearsal studio. Shortly thereafter, they united under the name Soil. After several lineup changes, including the addition of Shavo Odadjian (bass) and John Dolmayan (drums), System of a Down was finally born in 1995. Amid lyrical assaults ranging from the personal to aggressive political and social indictments, SOAD draws upon an unusually wide range of stylistic influences including rap, jazz, hardcore, goth, Middle-Eastern, and even Armenian music. Dynamics can change on a dime. Vocalist/lyricist Serj explains, “We don’t just concentrate on an aggressive sound, though we have that. Anger becomes more angry when you’re quiet at first.” Nowhere is that better exemplified than in “Sugar,” the third cut from their self- titled 1998 debut. First, a word about the tone: More than any other band in this book, the guitars in “Sugar” have a pronounced lower midrange peak in the 600-800 Hz range.
