CHAPTER FOUR CELTIC SPIRITUALITY 4.1 Introduction The rediscovery of Celtic spirituality, particularly Celtic prayers and liturgical forms, has led to a popular movement, inter alia, among Anglicans around the world, including those in South Africa. Celtic spirituality has an attraction for both Christian and non-Christian, and often the less formal services are easier for secularized people, who have not been raised in a Christian environment, to accept. A number of alternative Christian communities wit h an accent on recovering Celtic spirituality have been established in recent years in the United Kingdom and in other parts of the world. The Northumbria Community, formed in 1976 (Raine & Skinner 1994: 440) is described as follows: The Community is clearly Christian, but with members from all kinds of Christian tradition, and some with no recognisable church background at all. We are married and single: some are unemployed, most are in secular jobs, some in full-time service which is specifically Christian, others are at home looking after families….Some of the most loyal friends of the Community are not yet committed Christians, but they are encouraged to participate as fully as they feel they can in our life. The Northumbria Community is one of several newly established communities with clear links to Celtic Spirituality. The near-universal appeal and flexibility reflected in the quotation above, is a feature of Celtic spirituality. For many in secularized Europe, the institutional church has lost its meaning, and traditional Christian symbols have no significance. Some of these people are now re-discovering Christianity through the vehicle of Celtic spirituality. -

Martin, May 2012 The description of the Dagda in §93 of Cath Maige Tuired has become iconic: the giant, slovenly man in a too-short tunic and crude horsehide shoes, dragging a huge club behind him. Several aspects of this depiction are unique to this text, including the language used to describe the Dagda’s odd weapon. The text presents it as a gabol gicca rothach, which Gray translates as a “wheeled fork.” In every other mention of the Dagda’s club – including the other references in CMT (§93 and §119) – the term used is lorg. DIL gives significantly different fields of reference for the two terms: 2 lorg denotes a staff, rod, club, handle of an implement, or “the membrum virile” (thus enabling the scatological pun Slicht Loirge an Dagdai, “Track of the Dagda’s Club/Penis”), while gabul bears a variety of definitions generally attached to the concept of “forking.” The attested compounds for gabul include gabulgicce, “a pronged pole,” with references to both the CMT usage and staves held by Conaire’s swineherds in Togail Bruidne Da Derga. DIL also mentions several occurrences of gabullorc, “a forked or pronged pole or staff,” including an occurrence in TBDD (where an iron gabullorg is carried by the supernatural Fer Caille) and another in Bretha im Fuillema Gell (“Judgements on Pledge-Interests”). -

Digging for my Dutch ancestral roots My personal search for traces of an indigenous spirituality in the ancestral past of the Netherlands Wim Bonis The need to understand our ancestry To understand why these days the survival of Western civilization is at stake due to several crises confronting it, it is essential for all of us to get know socially and individually who we actually are and how did we get to where we are today. Gradually we discover that the inner and outer cannot be divided any longer. That is the reason why I have turned this wisdom into the motto of my website: as without so within: where we are, is who we are. In this respect, I have been trying to increase my understanding of the ancestral past of the western, coastal region of the Netherlands, the place where I was born and I am still living. An important step in this direction I have taken in 2005 when I wrote – and published – an article (in Dutch) about the settlement Lugdunum Batavorum and its connection to Celtic culture. In the same year wrote an expanded version of this article, to include more information.1 In the current article I will repeat a few facts that I have written down at the time, but this is necessary to be able to present the results of my search as complete as possible. One of the most important discoveries since I wrote my article in 2005 is the fact that our lives are always fully embedded in the landscape, and that our prehistoric ancestors were much more aware of that than we modern human beings. -

The Goddesses of the Low Countries
The Goddesses of the Low Countries Wim Bonis In the pre-Roman Netherlands, this is the period preceding the Roman invasion in 57 BC, not only Gods but also Goddesses were worshipped. With regard to the prehistoric experience of religion in the Netherlands, Dutch researchers have always given more obvious attention to the male Gods than to the Goddesses. The question is whether this is justified. In this article I will try to sketch the reality of Goddess worship as it has or must have existed in the Netherlands before the arrival of the Romans, and could continue in a somewhat Romanized form under the Roman regime. I will explore the border area between prehistory and history, examine the Germanic and Celtic heritage, and the role of woman and the landscape within the indigenous religious experience. In order to get to a good impression of pre-Roman religious life, we can consult a great variety of sources: Classical writers, linguists, historians of religions, mythological researchers and material finds of, for instance, religious statues and sacrificed objects. I shall start with the last, the material finds, because they offer the best starting point for research into Goddess worship in the pre-Roman, and therefore prehistoric, Netherlands. The archaeological finds from the Roman era In the river delta area of the Rhine, Meuse, Waal, IJssel and the Scheldt – to which a large part of the Netherlands belongs and also the northern part of Belgium must be counted – many stone altar statues (also called votive stones or altar stones) and terracotta figurines have been found. -

TRIERER GÖTTERVASE 17 Wenn man sich dazu noch an den Kessel von Gundestrup erinnert, den Drexel in seiner grundlegenden Besprechung dieses rätselvollen Gefäßes (Arch. Jahrb. 30, 1915 S. 7) einleuchtend in die Mitte des 1. Jahrhunderts n. Chr. datiert und an die heiligen Gefäße der Cimbern erinnert (Strabo VII 2,1 '), von denen sie ihren kost barsten dem Augustus übersandten, dann wird klar, daß in diesen mit Götterbildern geschmückten Gefäßen ein tief eingewurzelter, alteinheimischer Brauch vorliegt2). Freilich diese alte, bodenständige Sitte hat sich im 3. Jahrhundert, in dem wir uns hier befinden, auch bei den Treverern schon ganz in römisches Gewand gekleidet. Wie die Technik dieser Schwarzfirnisgefäße aus dem Mittelmeergebiet kommt, so sehen die Götterbilder äußerlich auch wie römisch aus. Aber die an unserm Becher dargestellten Götter sind alles solche, die dem einheimischen Glauben entstammen. In Mercur dürfen wir den großen, gallischen Hauptgott, den Teutates, erblicken, den die belgischen Planetenvasen noch als Dreikopf bringen. Seine drei Begleiterinnen aber entsprechen den drei Gebieten, in denen seine göttliche Macht sich auswirkt. Wenn er Segen und Reichtum spendet, steht ihm Fortuna zur Seite, für Heilung in Krankheit und Not Minerva in ihrer gallischen Ausprägung und für Sieg im Kampfe die Göttin Bellona. Daneben ist noch eins festzustellen, was sich mit der sinnvollen, hohen Be deutung des Schmuckes mit Götterbildern, den diese Gefäße tragen, nicht ganz leicht vereinigen läßt: Die Auswahl der Gefäßformen, Flaschen und Becher, und der Inhalt der aufgemalten Sprüche, die ausnahmslos nur zum Gelage passen, machen es zweifellos, daß unsere Göttergefäße nichts anderes gewesen sind, als T rin k gefäße, die offenbar nur zu Gelagen gedient haben. -
