SPES Historical Fencing Gear is a group of HEMA enthusiasts. At the very beginning we were producing combat clothing and civil clothing for medieval reenactors. With time passing we have also expanded our business with products for Historical Fencing lovers. What made us unique throughout the years: • high quality of our products • constant development of our offer TESTED ON • stable cooperation with our customers • contribution to the development of HEMA circle HUMANS The very first protective gear fully designed and created by us was manufactured in 2007 for the needs of Fechtschule Gdańsk on the initiative of Andrzej Zmuda Trzebiatowski and with the participation of Jan Chodkiewicz. Since then we are in cooperation with Fechtschule schools from Poland and all over the world in the field of inventing and testing our products. They are the source of information about their expectations towards the gear during combat. The knowledge is the key point when designing new elements and improving protectors. We take into consideration all the ideas and suggestions of our products’ users so our gear meets your expectations and gives you great satisfaction during combat! 2 “Hussar” Fencing Jacket 800N DESCRIPTIONS COLOURS In order to meet your expectations we present a modern, durable “Hussar” Fencing Jacket 800N, with a Basic: high level of protection against hits. It is made of high tear resistant fabric. A new filling system with high shock-absorption features and breathable lining with anti-bacterial aperture ensures heat and moisture transfer and high comfort of use and maintenance (washing and drying). “Hussar” Fencing Jacket 800N has foam enforcements on shoulders, chest and back, a plastic elbow protector and plastic inserts on forearms, ensuring very good protection against hits. All additional protectors may be taken out, cut out or exchanged for different ones, depending on one’s preferences to adjust the jacket to individual needs and intensity of training. A strap on the back and sleeve straps allow a better fit of the jacket. Two zippers on the front ensure a secure, durable and reliable closing. The jacket has a blade catcher which protects the larynx from thrusts and a loop, which allows to store it conveniently. “Hussar” Fencing Jacket 800N also stands out with its looks – it has a grey binding on the front, on the blade catcher and around the bottom edge. The jacket closes in front (see the picture) with the help of a zipper and velcro. On the front of the collar, there is a broad overlap which Special: closes with velcro. The sleeves are specially designed for better arm movement. Also, there are additional protective layers on the chest, shoulders and elbows. The layers of fabric (from the outside) are: 1 layer of cotton, one protective layer, and 1 layer of lining. The design is based on previous model (1.1), highly valued among the historical fencing devotees. It is equipped with fasteners for mounting an additional protection – detachable, specially schaped, plastic pads. Noticing growing group of ladies within HEMA community along with growing popularity of this Jacket model we decided to redesign it in a best way to be suitable for ladies anatomical shape. Special: Except the fact that it is well-fitted, jacket keeps all the assets of male model such us fold on the front fastened with zipper and Velcro, special collar with Velcro and blade catcher in front. Also the special construction of the sleeves for better arm movement during fighting. To increase the protection level jacket has thick amortization layers on the chest, ribs, shoulders and elbows. It has a special system of layers which guarantees maximum protection and mobility with the minimal arming protection. Special: Additionally it protects the body from stabs and cuts. The torso and the neck have overlaps which protect againts thrusts. The gambeson is tailored in a way that its lower part sits on the hips. The sleeves are made of 3 elements to guarantee the best mobility of the elbows. For the mobility of the shoulders, we use special deep-set slevees as SIZE well as gussets in the armpits. The „FG” gambeson is composed of: 1 SIZE layer of linen (outer); 2 layers of cotton; 1 thick, thickly woven, woollen S-XL fabric layer; and finally a very sturdy cotton layer. On the shoulders, the S-XL Custom number of protective layers increase from 1 to 3. Custom The gambeson is made of linen to keep historical correctness as much as possible. Using gambeson made of linen, it is necessary to remember that this fabric is less resistant (than for example cotton) for contact WEIGHT with sharp elements or materials such us Velcro tape.     Hans Wurm’s Ringbuch c. 1507 - A Translation and Commentary By Keith P. Myers Exclusively for the ARMA, March 2002 The manuscript you see here is thought to have originated in approximately 1500 in the workshop of the Landshut woodcutter and printer Hans Wurm. “Landshut” could be translated as “grounds keeper”, which may go along with the description of Wurm as a “woodcutter” as well as a printer. Dr. Sydney Anglo, senior ARMA advisor and leading scholar of historical fencing, describes Wurm’s work as an “experimental and rudimentary block book”, and notes that it may have been one of the earliest printed treatises produced. The author remains anonymous, and only one copy is known to survive. It is thought to consist of the actual colored test prints made from the original wood blocks. It is unclear whether the Ringbuch was ever actually widely published. It was, however, plagiarized on at least two occasions. These later reproductions referred to the manuscript as “Das Landshuter Ringerbuch.” Although they demonstrate some dialect differences, these copies almost directly correlate with Wurm’s Ringbuch. Both likely arose independently of each other, and where based directly upon Wurm’s earlier work. The first copy is dated to approximately 1507. It does not designate the exact year, the author, the printer, or the locale. While it places the techniques in the same order as Wurm, the grapplers in the illustrations are dressed in a completely different fashion than in Wurm’s Ringbuch. The second copy is dated to approximately 1510. It originated from the Augsberg printer Hannsen Sittich.

    Martial Arts Studies in Germany Sixt Wetzler, dvs-Kommission „Kampfkunst & Kampfsport“; [email protected] In March 2011, the first German conference for martial arts studies was held at the University of Bayreuth. Initiated by Prof. Peter Kuhn (University of Bayreuth) and Prof. Harald Lange (University of Würzburg), this conference also marked the beginning of the 'Commission for Martial Arts & Combat Sports' (Kommission Kampfkunst & Kampfsport) within the German Association for Sports Science (Deutsche Vereinigung für Sportwissenschaft - dvs). With their interdisciplinary approach, the conference of 2011 and the newly founded commission can be seen as a turning point for the German speaking literature on martial arts studies. However, the following research projects are far from being the first ones in Germany, Austria or Northern Switzerland to deal with the various aspects of martial arts and combat sports. This article will shed light on several of the roots of German language martial arts studies, before discussing the topics, approaches, and protagonists of the Kommission Kampfkunst & Kampfsport in detail. Furthermore, relevant, ongoing activities outside the Kommission are included in the review. I will try to draw a complete picture of the current situation of the field. Of course, I am fully aware that this is a difficult task to set for oneself. I hope the readers will forgive me if this article fails to name all important authors or works. The reason is not ill intent, but the dispersed and heterogeneous character of the relevant literature. Only recently has the Kommission begun to compile a bibliography on martial arts studies, and the work is far from being completed.

    SOME INTERPRETATIONS OF SELECTED PLAYS FROM THE WINDEN AS PRESENTED IN THE CODEX WALLERSTEIN By Hugh T. Knight, Jr. Fechtmeister, die Schlachtschule Introduction: The purpose of this paper is to present an interpretation of four of the plays given to us in the Codex Wallerstein (Universitaetsbibliothek Augsburg, I. 6.4°.2) which are related to the Win- den—a powerful technique of the Liechtenauer school of swordsmanship. Johannes Liechtenauer was a fourteenth-century fencing master who lived in Germany. He wrote (well, is presumed to have written) a series of rhymes intended to act as mnemonics for students of the Art of Fencing—der Kunst des Fechtens—to use to help remember his teach- ings. These rhymes were later interpreted by many other fencing masters in their own, more detailed, fencing books or “Fechtbücher”. Most of these later teachers were considered part of the Gesellschaft Liechtenauer, a term coined by Paulus Kal (himself a noted teacher and author of a Fechtbuch) and usually translated as the “Liechtenauer Society”. Some authorities have argued that Codex Wallerstein is not strictly part of the Liechtenauer school of swordsmanship (e.g., Żabiński & Walczak 2002, p.11), a question that is beyond the scope of this work. In examining these plays, however, I was struck by the idea that they repre- sented techniques that built on the plays of Liechtenauer rather than being a separate line of teaching. The four plays I will be examining here, for example, are all related to or develop- ments from the Winden—one of the primary Liechtenauer techniques. Nowhere in Liechtenauer’s teachings are we shown a successful counter to the Winden.

    Martin Siber’s Fight-Lore of 1491 AD A sword and buckler thesis on the Fechtlehre from Handschrift M I 29 (Codex Speyer) at the University of Salzburg, Austria by Jeffrey Hull Foreword The Fechtlehre (fight-lore) of Martin Siber is part of the Handschrift M I 29 now residing at Universitätsbibliothek Salzburg. This Fechtbuch (fight-book) was originally put to paper by Hans von Speyer, its compiler and editor, in the southwestern area of Germany in 1491 AD, and hence we may call this Codex Speyer. A fine transcript of the whole Codex Speyer by Beatrix Koll of Universitätsbibliothek Salzburg is posted at: http://www.ubs.sbg.ac.at/sosa/webseite/fechtbuch.htm. I thank her for her inspiring work and gracious help, and encourage others to view it. At one time Universitätsbibliothek Salzburg had posted its own high-quality colour facsimile of Codex Speyer on the Web. Uni-Salz no longer does but hopefully someday they may post it again. Also, I thank Monika Maziarz for sharing her personal transcript of Siber for helpful comparison. Ultimately, I chose to do my own original transcript of Siber’s fight-lore based upon the manuscript- facsimile of Codex Speyer, so that I could trust the unity and validity of my own work.     Peter Smallridge, instructor Feb 02, 2017 16:00 GMT Historical European Martial Arts taster day comes to Thanet A new historical European martial arts (HEMA) club, the Thanet Fecht Schule (Thanet Fight School) is being launched in Thanet at the St Georges School, Broadstairs at a special taster workshop on Sunday 26th March instructed by Peter Smallridge of the KDF (Kunst Des Fechtens) Tonbridge group. Jason Hulott, Event Organiser, says: "There has been a huge surge in interest in western historical martial arts over the last number of years, as books have been discovered documenting actual fighting techniques of medieval knights from across Europe. While it has been a long standing understanding that the Far East had martial arts schools and tradition, until recently it was not widely thought this was the same in Europe. "However, German and Italian schools of swordsmanship have existed for hundreds of years and these documents now provide practitioners with the ability to learn and fight in the same way the knights of old did across Europe in the 14th and 15th Century." The Thanet group will follow the German tradition of Johannes Liechtenauer’s Longsword, based on documents dating back to the 1400s. This tradition includes a range of possible study from Longsword, Dagger, Polearms and even unarmed wrestling or Ringen. Jason adds: "The hope is that the workshop will lead to a study group being established in Thanet to offer medieval sword training for over 18s. It is a great way to get into shape and take part in a living history of our ancestors".
