New Zealand's Pre-Human Avifauna and Its Vulnerability R.N. HOLDAWAY 11 Department of Zoology, University of Canterbury, Christchurch NEW ZEALAND'S PRE-HUMAN AVIFAUNA AND ITS VULNERABILITY Summary: In the past 1000 years New Zealand has experienced a major 'extinction event', losing 40-50% of the avifauna, at least 50% of the frog fauna, and unknown proportions of the lizard and invertebrate faunas. During this period, bird species became extinct at different times and rates depending on the particular aspects of their ecology and life history which made them vulnerable to habitat loss, hunting, predation, and competition for food resources. Three groups of species with different levels of vulnerability are recognised within this event: Group I, 1000-1200 AD - species susceptible to initial impact of hunting by Polynesians and dogs, and predation and competition for food after an explosive irruption of kiore (Rattus exulans); Group II, 1200-1780 AD - species more resilient but gradually reduced by Polynesian hunting and continuous clearance and fragmentation of habitat; Group III, 1780-present - species susceptible to hunting with European weapons and predation by Rattus norvegicus, R. rattus, mustelids, cats, and to competition by mammalian herbivores, and destruction of wet forest and wetland habitat. Climatic change is seen as a negligible influence relative to these major intrusions. Discussions of the pre-human avifauna have so far concentrated almost exclusively on moas (Aves: Dinornithidae, Anomalopterygidae), partly because information on the other extinct species is sparse. The ecology of 12 species in the pre-human avifauna is inferred from their anatomy, relationships to extant species, sub-fossil evidence of diets, and analogy with related forms elsewhere. With the fourth volume expected imminently and with worldwide acceptance gained, there are no accolades that I can add to the many that have already been lavished on the HBW series. With this in mind, I can only say, again, that this book is cheap for all it offers, that it is a true landmark in the history of ornithological publications and a ‘must’ for ornithologists and birders alike. The general format and presentation of families and species continues as in previous volumes, as well as that of the plates and photographs. The overall quality and standards of plate and photograph reproduction are maintained in this volume; all on excellent quality paper. However, I would note that, at least in my copy, plates 31 (avocets), 37 (plovers), 47 (seedsnipes) and 54 (terns) look a bit pale or faded. A couple of very slight differences distinguish this volume from previous ones. The most important is the inclusion of a “Voice” ‘subsection’ under the description of all Gruidae and Rallidae. This subsection, which had been originally planned only for Passerines, is welcome in this volume, as it will prove particularly useful in the case of the rails and crakes, as much as it would have been for tinamous. I hope we can expect this subsection to appear in some of the other forthcoming non-passerine volumes.

Peru is one of the countries with the highest diversity of birds worldwide, having about 1,876 species in its territory. However, studies focused on chewing lice (Phthiraptera) have been carried out on only a minority of bird species. The available data are distributed in 87 publications in the national and international literature. In this checklist we summarize all the records to date of chewing lice on wild and domestic birds in Peru. Among the 301 species of birds studied, 266 species of chewing lice were recorded. The localities with the highest records were the Departments of Cusco, Junín, Lima and Madre de Dios. No records of birds pa- rasitized by these lice have been found in seven departments of Peru. Studies related to lice have only been reported in 16 % of bird species in the country, indicating that research concerning chewing lice has not yet been performed for the the majority of birds in Peru. Tennyson Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, PO Box 467, Wellington, New Zealand (Email: [email protected]) Published on-line: 4 November 2009 Abstract: Since the 1980s, morphological and molecular research has resulted in significant advances in understanding the relationships and origins of the recent terrestrial vertebrate fauna in the New Zealand biogeographic region. This research has led to many taxonomic changes, with a significant increase in the number of bird and reptile species recognised. It has also resulted in the recognition of several more Holocene (<10 000 years ago) bird species extinctions. The conclusion that Holocene extinctions were primarily caused by human- hunting and predation by other introduced mammals (particularly rats and cats) has been supported by new data. Despite many local eradications of introduced pests, the number of introduced species has increased, with the establishment of five more foreign birds and (on Norfolk Island) the house gecko (Hemidactylus frenatus). Many new, significant New Zealand vertebrate fossils have been reported, including more dinosaurs from the Cretaceous, and the first Tertiary records of frogs, rhynchocephalids, lizards, crocodylians, bats and a terrestrial “Mesozoic ghost” mammal from the Early Miocene near St Bathans. For birds, the earliest known penguins in the world have been discovered, and there are intriguing Late Cretaceous – Early Paleocene remains still awaiting detailed description.

(all photos by DLV) ULTIMATE CHILE 19 NOVEMBER– 3/8 DECEMBER 2018 LEADER: MARK PEARMAN and DANI LOPEZ-VELASCO 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Ultimate Chile 2018 www.birdquest-tours.com Once again, our Ultimate Chile tour produced all of the mainland Chilean endemics, all eight tapaculos, some the size of a puffin, including walk-away views of both Chestnut-throated and Black-throated Huet- Huets, and an astonishing wader spectacle of 33 species, including Diademed Sandpiper-Plover, Magellanic Plover, Peruvian Thick-knee, Tawny-throated and Rufous-chested Dotterels and Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe. Our two main pelagics, and various ferry crossings, delivered 17 species of tubenose with highlights of Southern Royal, Chatham and Buller´s Albatrosses, one of the first Shy (White-capped) Albatross records for Chile, and some Pincoya Storm Petrels. In all, we observed 280 species (of which 28 were only seen on the extension) plus some 16 species of mammal, among which, the rarely seen Huemul and delightful Commerson's Dolphin stood out. As we travelled almost the entire spine of Chile we sampled three major biomes including several vast wilderness areas, from the Atacama desert to the high Andes and through Patagonian forests to the Magellanic and Fuegian tundra steppe. Other unforgettable highlights, from north to south, included, the critically endangered Chilean Woodstar, Tamarugo Conebill, White-throated Earthcreeper, Andean and James's Flamingos, Magellanic Woodpecker, Burrowing Parrot, Spectacled Duck, White-throated Hawk, Rufous-legged Owl, Des Murs’ Wiretail and the recently split Patagonian Forest Earthcreeper.
