Selah Sue , © JP Mondino .

  • Meshell Ndegeocello Meshell Ndegeocello
MESHELL NDEGEOCELLO NNNewNewewew album : «: « Weather » out on the 8th of November Biography by Romain Grossman Meshell has changed. So has her music. It’s more peaceful, freer. Her new album, Weather, cloaks itself in the colours of autumn, full of in-between shades and hues and with a certain mildness to it. The singer has let her feelings carry her along. Meshell has never been scared of sharing her most intimate thoughts in explicit or colourful terms that always come from the heart. As ever, she is true to herself. But Weather ’s folk sensibility and pregnant acoustic melodies make this a supremely accessible album. “For a long time I was at war with everyone else. I dug my heels in, I fought hard. That’s all over now. I have my opinions, but they’re no longer a source of conflict with the rest of the world.” On Weather Meshell’s usually deep vocals slip into a register more like a whisper, sharing secrets about subjects that are straightforward, almost light-hearted. She has pared down her style to something like pop. “I started to write this album on the guitar and you can hear it. The final atmosphere’s gentler.” And then the singer agreed without fuss to put her fate in the hands of a producer. Joe Henry (Ani DiFranco, Bettye Lavette, Allen Toussaint, etc.) helped her reveal a different side to herself. And Meshell went along with this. “I’ve known him since the Bitter album; Craig Street introduced us. I hadn’t called on someone from outside for several albums.

  • Monitoring the Cross-Border Circulation of European Music Repertoire
Monitoring the cross-border circulation of European music repertoire within the European Union Report commissioned by EMO & Eurosonic Noordeslag Emmanuel Legrand January 2012 1 About this report: The music scene in Europe is very strong, creative and diversified. Each country within the European Union has a solid local music scene. However, due to the structure of the various national markets, the existence of language diversity and different cultural behaviours, the flow of repertoire across borders within the EU is far from reflecting the notion of one single market. Although there have been embryonic attempts to document the situation of European music repertoire in Europe, the full scale of the situation has never been fully monitored. The European Music Office, in partnership with Eurosonic Noordeslag and Nielsen, has undertaken a preliminary study aimed at monitoring and analysing the cross-border flows of repertoire within the EU in 2011. The study provides quantifiable data on the circulation of repertoire with the ambition of becoming the foundation for an observatory of the circulation of repertoire in Europe. This report has been made possible with the contributions from the following organisations: [NB: the views expressed in this report are those of its author and do not represent those of EMO of Eurosonic Noordeslag.] 2 Executive Summary The study on the circulation of European repertoire within the European Union was commissioned by the European Music Office and Dutch conference and festival Eurosonic Noordeslag. Its purpose is to analyse the flow of repertoire between EU countries, based on statistical data on radio airplay and digital downloads.

Segers Samenvatting: (max.

For some, this journey goes surpri- singly quick, for others it seems an eternal quest. Anyway, to master the drums it is key to focus on three main skills. 1) Play along with musicians (or audio) in different tempos and styles. 2) Play beats (or grooves) in which the feel and independence is trained. 3) Play fills in which technique, style and chops (or licks) are combined. Often these 3 main skills are studied separately, which is perfect to obtain a good and so- lid foundation. But the next step is crucial: Learning to combine these three topics. And that is what this book is about! But do not forget that this is only a very small selection from book 1 and book 2.

Ecological Models of Musical Structure in Pop-rock, 1950–2019 Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Nicholas J. Shea, M.A., B.Ed. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2020 Dissertation Committee: Anna Gawboy, Advisor and Dissertation Co-Advisor Nicole Biamonte, Dissertation Co-Advisor Daniel Shanahan David Clampitt Copyright by Nicholas J. Shea 2020 Abstract This dissertation explores the relationship between guitar performance and the functional components of musical organization in popular-music songs from 1954 to 2019. Under an ecological theory of affordances, three distinct interdisciplinary approaches are employed: empirical analyses of two stylistically contrasting databases of popular-music song transcriptions, a motion-capture study of performances by practicing musicians local to Columbus, Ohio, and close readings of works performed and/or composed by popular- music guitarists. Each offers gestural analyses that provide an alternative to the object- oriented approach of standard popular-music analysis, as well as clarification on issues related to style, such as the socially determined differences between “pop” and “rock” music. ii Dedication To Anna Gawboy, who is always in my corner. iii Acknowledgments Here I face the nearly insurmountable task of thanking those who have helped to develop this research. Even as all written and analytical content in this document is my own, I cannot deny the incredible value collaboration has brought to this inherently interdisciplinary study. I am extremely fortunate to have a small team of individuals on which I can rely for mentorship and support and whose research backgrounds contribute greatly to the domains of this document.

  • Traditionally, Shin Buddhist Temples Have Not Had the Practice of Meditation. In
Meditation in Shin Buddhism Interim Rinban raditionally, Shin Buddhist temples have not had the practice of meditation. In & Supervising fact, some might argue that there is no place for meditation at a Shin Buddhist Minister temple. I would argue this point, however, and would say that there is a place for Rev. Marvin Harada Tmeditation in Shin Buddhism, and that if Shin Buddhism is to grow in the West, it must incorporate meditation in some form. At Orange County, we have offered meditation services twice a week for probably around 18 years now. We have also initiated it at the Vista Buddhist Temple maybe close to 7 or 8 years ago. What we have found is that there is a great interest in meditation and that the meditation service helps tremendously to introduce the temple and the teachings to new people. For many years working at Orange County Buddhist Church (OCBC), we would get phone calls to the office. “Do you have meditation?” I had to answer, “No, we don’t.” I would then refer them to Zen or other places that had meditation. It began to dawn on me: Why I was sending all of these people to other places? If we had meditation, we could introduce Jodo Shinshu to more people. And so it began, some 18 years ago, with the assistance of Reverend Koshin Ogui, whom we had conduct an introduction to meditation class for several nights in a row, that we began to offer meditation services on a weekly basis at OCBC.
