NCEA Changes Being Planned

In case you missed it, the Government has recently confirmed its final NCEA change package. Schools have been advised that the changes are intended to: strengthen our national qualification; address over-assessment and fragmented learning; promote culturally responsive teaching and learning; and improve accessibility, the support available to teachers, and the information available to students and whānau. A copy of the Ministry of Education’s announcement is available here:http://education.govt.nz/news/changes-to-strengthen-ncea- confirmed-and-provisional-subject-list-for-ncea-level-1-subjects-released/. There are changes to the subjects that the Ministry proposes to support at NCEA Level 1. This is consistent with the policy objective - for NCEA Level 1 to become a broader, foundational qualification that allows students to keep their pathway options open, while Levels 2 and 3 promote greater specialisation. The Ministry has asked us to encourage you all to give feedback. Public engagement on the subject list for NCEA Level 1 has commenced for a period of two months (closing on 20 April 2020). More information is available on the Ministry’s website along with the provisional subject list for NCEA Level 1: https://consultation.education.govt.nz/ncea/ras-provisional-subject-list. The Cabinet paper and Ministry advice have also been made public: http://www.education.govt.nz/our-work/information-releases/advice-seen-by-our-ministers/ (See under the February tab). You can find the list in the engagement questionnaire, or for your ease of reference it is also accessible from this link to the Cabinet paper http://www.education.govt.nz/assets/Uploads/R-Cab-Pack-Implementation-of-a-New-Strengthened-NCEA-Redacted.pdf (go to pages 19 and 20). 5 Junior Campus News

9 Assessment Procedures Your Online Access to Teaching Staff at Hargest

The age of e-mail contact has had the effect of making teacher/ parent and teacher/student communication much easier, and, as a result, much more frequent! Generally this has been very positive for all of us. Whilst staff accessibility is encouraged, we have recognised the need for some guidelines in order to allow staff to “switch off” after normal work hours. (Part of being a “Good Employer”).

Guidelines/Expectations • We recognise that parents often send e-mails in evenings or weekends. (When they have time to attend to parenting issues!) However, staff are not expected to read or reply to e-mails after hours (ie during evenings, weekends or holidays). • Staff response time will be variable according to their workload and teaching pressures. They are expected to acknowledge your email the next working day, and, Look out for this at where required, follow up with a more detailed home and discuss it response as soon as with your child! practicable (generally within two more days). 10 Japanese Exchange

Last Year as a Year 12 student, Madeleine Doherty was very fortunate to spend 9 months in Japan on a paid scholarship at Kun-ei Girls’ High School in Osaka. (Kun-ei sends 2 students to Hargest each year.) In order to improve her Japanese as much as possible, Maddy independently studied Japanese in her classes, when she couldn’t do the work they were doing. She also had 4 Japanese lessons per week designed specifically for her and another kiwi student. During her time there, Maddy became very proficient at Japanese and she learned a lot about the Japanese Culture including being a member of the Tea Ceremony Club at school.

Year 8 First Aid

This term students will take part in the St John Safe Kids’ programme with a St John instructor. Students learn basic First Aid techniques and gain knowledge in order to keep themselves safe in the bush. The skills and knowledge they acquire before heading off to camp in Deep Cove is invaluable.

11 James Shaw visit

Green Party Co-Leader and Minister for Climate Change the Hon. James Shaw spoke to Mr James’ Year 12 Media Studies class. He also confirmed funding to upgrade the boiler.

The Minister answered questions from the students on how the media cover political issues and whether they’re doing a good job to inform voters. This will be useful in the assessment the class are now doing, and we thank him for his time

13 Omaui Camp

Our Year 7 students have started the year with much excitement; some risk taking, challenges and team building activities. Our camps to Omaui began early, with our first class going in the second week of the term. It has been fantastic watching our new students rise to the challenges and give their best, participating with enthusiasm during a variety of activities. From tramping, abseiling and adventure based learning to contributing during team duties, our students are quickly showing

that they have picked up the culture of ‘The Hargest Way’. Our camps will continue through to week eight of this term. It is a valuable experience and positive way of establishing a team culture within each class. We appreciate the support of many parents and whanau members, along with our Senior Campus students who have come along as helpers. Your contribution has added to the smooth running of our camping experience. 14 SVA Foundation and Student Volunteer Senior Work Army Service Award Programme
