Leach’s Storm-Petrels (Hydrobates leucorhous) are burrow-nesting seabirds that breed on coastal islands throughout much of the North Atlantic, with most of the world’s population breeding in Atlantic Canada. Population declines in the past 20–30 years have resulted in the species being uplisted to “Vulnerable” on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. One of the species’ most well-studied colonies is on Kent Island, New Brunswick in the Bay of Fundy. -

The Taxonomy of the Procellariiformes Has Been Proposed from Various Approaches

Ornithol.),22:114-23,1990 Genetic Divergence and Relationships in Fifteen Species of Procellariiformes Nagahisa Kuroda*, Ryozo Kakizawa* and Masayoshi Watada** Abstract The genetic analysis of 23 protein loci in 15 species of Procellariiformes was made The genetic distancesbetween the specieswas calculatedand a dendrogram was formulated of the group. The separation of Hydrobatidae from all other taxa including Diomedeidae agrees with other precedent works. The resultsof the present study support the basic Procellariidclassification system. However, two points stillneed further study. The firstpoint is that Fulmarus diverged earlier from the Procellariidsthan did the Diomedeidae. The second point is the position of Puffinuspacificus which appears more closely related to the Pterodroma petrels than to other Puffinus species. These points are discussed. Introduction The taxonomy of the Procellariiformes has been proposed from various approaches. The earliest study by Forbes (1882) was made by appendicular myology. Godman (1906) and Loomis (1918) studied this group from a morphological point of view. The taxonomy of the Procellariiformes by functional osteology and appendicular myology was studied by Kuroda (1954, 1983) and Klemm (1969), The results of the various studies agreed in proposing four families of Procellariiformes: Diomedeidae, Procellariidae, Hydrobatidae, and Pelecanoididae. They also pointed out that the Procellariidae was a heterogenous group among them. Timmermann (1958) found the parallel evolution of mallophaga and their hosts in Procellariiformes. Recently, electrophoretical studies have been made on the Procellariiformes. Harper (1978) found different patterns of the electromorph among the families. Bar- rowclough et al. (1981) studied genetic differentiation among 12 species of Procellari- iformes at 16 loci, and discussed the genetic distances among the taxa but with no consideration of their phylogenetic relationships. -

Welcome On behalf of the Ornithological Society of New Zealand we are pleased to welcome you to Blenheim and the Third Australasian Ornithological Conference. Delegates have come from all parts of Australia and New Zealand and some from even further afield. Some are presenting papers reporting work done elsewhere including New Guinea, East Timor and the Cook Islands. We are delighted that the sphere of interest in these conferences is expanding to take in the fascinating avifaunas of other nations in the wider Australasian/Pacific regions. We have been over whelmed by the number of interesting papers offered for presentation. We have had to run concurrent sessions for the entire duration of the conference and for parts of one day resorted to running a third session. Even then we were unable to allow all those people who offered a spoken paper the opportunity to present their work. We apologize to those who missed out. The programme contains the rich mix of science and conservation typical of AOC conferences. Doubts have been expressed as to the wisdom of holding a conference in Blenheim rather than on a university campus. We are certain that those who go on the fieldtrips will understand why Blenheim was chosen. Marlborough is arguably the wine and food capital of New Zealand and our sponsor Grove Mill Winery and our caterers promise fare unequalled on any university campus. We trust that the conference will stimulate discussion and that many new friendships are forged and old acquaintances renewed. Breeding of the Southern Giant Petrel Macronectes giganteus in southern Chile. Marine Ornithology 46: 57–60. Here I review the current knowledge of the breeding status of the Southern Giant Petrel Macronectes giganteus in Chile and provide new data on the population at Isla Noir in the Región de Magallanes. Breeding numbers on Isla Noir are approximately six times greater than previously reported for the entire country, including all offshore islands except for the Diego Ramirez Archipelago, for which information is sparse. Here, I also describe the nests and eggs of this species found in Isla Noir, as well as feeding behavior, including consumption of carrion but also active hunting in penguin colonies. Only the Southern Giant Petrel, and not the Northern Giant Petrel M. halli, has been seen within Chilean fiords and nearshore waters. The IPOA-Seabirds stipulates that countries with longline fisheries (conducted by their own or foreign vessels) or a fleet that fishes elsewhere should carry out an assessment of these fisheries to determine if a bycatch problem exists and, if so, to determine its extent and nature. If a problem is identified, countries should adopt a National Plan of Action – Seabirds for reducing the incidental catch of seabirds in their fisheries. South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) are a United Kingdom Overseas Territory and the combined area covered by the Territorial Sea and Maritime Zone of South Georgia is referred to as the South Georgia Maritime Zone (SGMZ) and fisheries within the SGMZ are managed by the Government of South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands (GSGSSI) within the framework of the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living (CCAMLR). -

Frank Abstract Crustaceans possess a huge variety of body plans and inhabit most regions of Earth, specializing in the aquatic realm. Their diversity of form and living space has resulted in equally diverse eye designs. This chapter reviews the latest state of knowledge in crustacean vision concentrating on three areas: spectral sensitivities, ontogenetic development of spectral sen sitivity, and the temporal properties of photoreceptors from different environments. Visual ecology is a binding element of the chapter and within this framework the astonishing variety of stomatopod (mantis shrimp) spectral sensitivities and the environmental pressures molding them are examined in some detail. The quantity and spectral content of light changes dra matically with depth and water type and, as might be expected, many adaptations in crustacean photoreceptor design are related to this governing environmental factor. Spectral and temporal tuning may be more influenced by bioluminescence in the deep ocean, and the spectral quality of light at dawn and dusk is probably a critical feature in the visual worlds of many shallow-water crustaceans. -

Mud Islands, situated within the entrance of Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, about 60 km south of Melbourne, are well known for their rich bird-life, particularly sea-birds and waders. There are three closely grouped, low sandy-mud islets, covered with salt-scrub, and in the centre is a large shallow lagoon. The islands are the strong hold for Grey Plover, Pluvialis squatarola, and Great Knot, Chlidris tenuirostris, in south-eastern Australia, and they have been visited regularly by observers for many. -
