Se estudiaron los efectos de la edad, el lavado y la temperatura sobre la inducción de la germina­ ción precoz, el crecimiento de la radícula, y el tiempo hasta la floración de plantas provenientes de semillas inmaduras de soja [Glycine max (L.) Merr.) cv. Williams. Las semillas se cosecharon a los 25; 30; 35 y 40 días después de antesis (ODA). Las mismas se lavaron durante; 0. 12, 24 y 48 h en agua destilada aireada a 20; 25; 30 y 35*C. La germinación se continuó luego en oscuridad, a las mismas temperaturas. Se utilizó un diseño factorial; 4x4x4 (edad x tiempo de lavado x temperatu­ ra) con dos repeticiones de 20 semillas. Para cada edad se agregó un testigo con semillas maduras y secas (>60 ODA). Tanto el porcentaje como la tasa de germinación aumentaron en proporción directa con la edad. El lavado, independientemente del tiempo, estimuló la germinación y los even­ tos postgerminativos tempranos. Temperaturas de 20 a 30‘ C no modificaron la tasa de germinación ni la de crecimiento radicular, pero ambas cayeron abruptamente a 35*C. Esta temperatura inhibió, además, el establecimiento de las plántulas provenientes de embriones de 25 y 30 DDA. A partir de los 35 DDA el porcentaje de plántulas establecidas se independizó de la temperatura. Los días hasta la floración aumentaron en proporción inversa a la edad de las semillas. El lavado redujo los días hasta la floración de las plantas provenientes de semillas inmaduras. Temperaturas de 20 a 30X durante la germinación no tuvieron efecto sobre el tiempo hasta la floración. The effects of seed age, washing time and temperature on the precocious germination, radicle growth and time io flowering of immature soybean seeds[Glycine max (L.) Merr.] cv. Williams, were studied. Seeds of 25. 30. 35 and 40 days after antesis (DAA) were used. Washing was done with distilled aerated water, during; 0. 12, 24 and 48 h, at 20, 25, 30 and 35'C. The germination of the seed was continued in Petri dishes, in the dark, at the same temperatures. A factorial design 4x4x4 (age x washing time x temperature) with two replicates of 20 seeds was used. A control of mature and dry seeds (> 60 DAA) was included. Both, germination percentage, and radicie growth rate increased with seed age. Washing stimulated germination and early post-germinative events independently of the washing time. Temperatures of 20 and 30 *C did not change neither germination rate nor radicie growth irate, but both parameters dropped abruptly at 35*C. This temperature also inhibited seedling survival of 25 and 30 DDA seeds. After 35 DAA the survival of seedlings became temperature independent. Days to flower increased inversely to the age of the seeds. Washing shortened the time to flowering in plants produced by immatured seeds. Temperatures betweeen 20 to 30°C during germination did not have an effect on flowering time. Peck Department of Biology, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa, Ontario K1S 5B6, Canada stewart_peck@carleton. ca Abstract. The beetle fauna of the island of Dominica is summarized. It is presently known to contain 269 genera, and 361 species (in 42 families), of which 347 are named at a species level. Of these, 62 species are endemic to the island. The other naturally occurring species number 262, and another 23 species are of such wide distribution that they have probably been accidentally introduced and distributed, at least in part, by human activities. Undoubtedly, the actual numbers of species on Dominica are many times higher than now reported. This highlights the poor level of knowledge of the beetles of Dominica and the Lesser Antilles in general. Of the species known to occur elsewhere, the largest numbers are shared with neighboring Guadeloupe (201), and then with South America (126), Puerto Rico (113), Cuba (107), and Mexico-Central America (108). The Antillean island chain probably represents the main avenue of natural overwater dispersal via intermediate stepping-stone islands. The distributional patterns of the species shared with Dominica and elsewhere in the Caribbean suggest stages in a dynamic taxon cycle of species origin, range expansion, distribution contraction, and re-speciation. In total 20 aphid species, representing 12 genera, were found infesting 35 medicinal and aromatic plant species under 31 genera encompassing 19 families. Aphis gossypii with 17 host plant species was the most polyphagous species followed by Myzus persicae and Aphis fabae that infested 15 and 12 host plant species respectively. Twenty-two host plant species had multiple aphid species infestation. Sonchus asper was infested by eight aphid species and was followed by Tagetes minuta, Galinosoga perviflora and Chenopodium album that were infested by 7, 6 and 5 aphid species respectively. Asteraceae with 11 host plant species under 10 genera, carrying 13 aphid species under 8 genera was the most aphid- prone plant family. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000).

Received: 13 May 2020; Accepted: 15 July 2020; Published: date Abstract: Potyviruses are the largest group of plant infecting RNA viruses that cause significant losses in a wide range of crops across the globe. The majority of viruses in the genus Potyvirus are transmitted by aphids in a non-persistent, non-circulative manner and have been extensively studied vis-à-vis their structure, taxonomy, evolution, diagnosis, transmission and molecular interactions with hosts. This comprehensive review exclusively discusses potyviruses and their transmission by aphid vectors, specifically in the light of several virus, aphid and plant factors, and how their interplay influences potyviral binding in aphids, aphid behavior and fitness, host plant biochemistry, virus epidemics, and transmission bottlenecks. We present the heatmap of the global distribution of potyvirus species, variation in the potyviral coat protein gene, and top aphid vectors of potyviruses. Lastly, we examine how the fundamental understanding of these multi-partite interactions through multi-omics approaches is already contributing to, and can have future implications for, devising effective and sustainable management strategies against aphid- transmitted potyviruses to global agriculture.

Abstract Endophytes in Maize (Zea mays) in New Zealand by Jennifer Joy Brookes The aim of this study was to isolate fungal endophytes from maize in New Zealand (NZ) and to select endophytes with potential to reduce insect pests and/or plant diseases. Culture methods were used to isolate 322 isolates of fungi belonging to four phyla from maize (Zea mays L.) plants. Plants were sampled over two growing seasons (2014 and 2015) in two regions of NZ. Morphological and molecular (ITS rDNA sequencing) techniques were used to identify the fungi. The most common genera recovered were Fusarium, followed by Alternaria, Trichoderma, Epicoccum, Mucor, Penicillium and Cladosoprium spp. Of the Acomycota isolates, 33 genera from 6 classes were recovered.
