  • Second Lieutenant Philip Eric Edkins
Second Lieutenant Philip Eric Edkins Cyril enlisted in the 1st Birmingham Pals Regiment after war was declared. He was commissioned the following year and went to France in early 1916 to join his regiment the 1/7th Royal Warwickshire Regiment, Territorial Fotce. He was wounded in the Battle for the Bazentine Ridge, the second phase of the Battle of the Somme on 14th July 1916 and died two days later at the Heilly casualty clearing station. The Edkin’s family can trace their roots back to Droitwich where his great- great-grandfather, Ellis was born around 1796.i He married Ann Turrall on the 4th December 1827 at Kidderminster.ii Three years later, in 1830, John Turrall Edkins was born, the second of three children.iii Pigot’s Directory of 1842 records Ellis as a draper in Bromsgrove Street, Droitwich. John married Sarah Bakewell, from Sutton Coldfield, on 1st August 1860.iv After his marriage John and his wife returned to Droitwich, where they lived in Queens Street with his brother, Frederick Ellis Edkins.v John was employed in the family drapery business as was his younger brother. On the 9th February 1861, an opportunist thief stole 50 yards of carpeting from the outside the shop, but thanks to the quick thinking of a young girl on an errand, the transgressor was apprehended and the goods recovered.vi Figure 1 Newspaper report of an attempted robbery at the Edkins Drapery shop in 1861, Droitwich Tragedy struck the family when John died on the 7th January 1869, aged only 38 years, vii just a month after the birth of his third child Catherine Fanny.

  • Thomas Vincent Holbeche
THOMAS VINCENT HOLBECHE (Sutton Coldfield’s First Town Clerk) Born: 27th February 1846 Died: 16 January 1904 Janet Jordan Sutton Coldfield Local History Research Group February 2007 1 Introduction For 20 years (it seemed like 40!), I used to join the throng of commuters leaving from Sutton Coldfield Railway Station for Birmingham City Centre at 8.00 o’clock every weekday morning. Most days, we stood, side by side, facing the track, glumly preparing ourselves for the journey and workday ahead of us. In the winter, if the waiting room was open and the heater was working (joy of joys!), we all flocked inside to keep warm. Two enormous benches, which I reckoned to be as old as the station building (1884), were soon occupied and the miserable expressions soon brightened. For me, this vision never altered, until I came across some old newscuttings, which made me view that waiting room in a different light. It was ‘The Sutton Coldfield News’ of Saturday, January 23, 1904, which reported on the death of Thomas Vincent Holbeche, Sutton’s First Town Clerk. His last dying hours were spent in that waiting room, probably stretched out on one of the benches and suffering from the awful effects of a heart attack, away from his wife and home. I often thought afterward, as I sat there, how swiftly time passes! In those surroundings, it didn’t feel to me as if 100 years had gone by since that sad event and yet the Sutton Coldfield which Tom had served so well had changed in 100 different ways.

  • The Assessment Concludes That Multi-Typology Open Spaces Should Be Encouraged So Biodiversity Is an Integral Part of Recreational Open Space
The assessment concludes that multi-typology open spaces should be encouraged so biodiversity is an integral part of recreational open space. Description of provision in Walsall Metropolitan Borough 7.40. Walsall Metropolitan Borough falls in the southeast of the study area. The less densely urban eastern half of the borough is included within the study boundary. Figure 7.1e shows distribution of current open space provision by typology as assessed in the Walsall Green Space Strategy 2006-2011 (Draft for consultation July 06). The strategy did not set out any standards for analysis or for future provision, however the Urban Open Space SPD, April 2006 provides further summary of the current quantity of provision and targets for future provision. Firstly I do feel that Sutton Coldfield should have a further councillor - it is quite possible with the large number of houses planned by the Council and which could be completed before 2021, that a new Whitehouse Common Ward could be created. The figures also appear to show, that we have a quota of 10.5 (as per figures supplied by our MP) and thus the numbers should be rounded up to eleven and not kept at ten. I support the Conservative proposed changes for a range of reasons: Wylde Green proposed ward does follow 'community lines' and from discussions with residents and the local neighbourhood forum is popular. The Conservative changes give the numbers required, with clear and understandable boundaries that don't run down the middle of roads. Walmley and Minworth Ward. The moving of the Springfield Road Estate to Sutton Reddicap Ward makes great sense. This area cleaves more to Reddicap than to Walmley with residents shopping in the former area or Sutton and not Walmley. This fits with the intention of splitting down community lines. The boundaries themselves in this area are also much clearer and logical. Whitehouse Common. The proposed new ward represents a distinct area and community, and should be treated as such.
