Firstly I do feel that Sutton Coldfield should have a further councillor - it is quite possible with the large number of houses planned by the Council and which could be completed before 2021, that a new Whitehouse Common Ward could be created. The figures also appear to show, that we have a quota of 10.5 (as per figures supplied by our MP) and thus the numbers should be rounded up to eleven and not kept at ten. I support the Conservative proposed changes for a range of reasons: Wylde Green proposed ward does follow 'community lines' and from discussions with residents and the local neighbourhood forum is popular. The Conservative changes give the numbers required, with clear and understandable boundaries that don't run down the middle of roads. Walmley and Minworth Ward. The moving of the Springfield Road Estate to Sutton Reddicap Ward makes great sense. This area cleaves more to Reddicap than to Walmley with residents shopping in the former area or Sutton and not Walmley. This fits with the intention of splitting down community lines. The boundaries themselves in this area are also much clearer and logical. Whitehouse Common. The proposed new ward represents a distinct area and community, and should be treated as such. The Conservative proposals show that a new ward can be created accordingly with sensible boundaries and fitting the criteria for numbers of electors. Again from discussions with residents and a public meeting held this appears to be a popular proposal which would receive strong support. Previous changes that I would support - Minworth residents clearly want to remain part of a Walmley Ward, and this is where their community belongs. Therefore it should not be moved into Kingstanding now. Particularly when the area to the south of Hawthorn Road has previously been in Kingstanding Ward and is known as being part of Kingstanding Community. It shares a shopping centre, Hawthorn Road, has the same postcode, and its postal address is Kingstanding. Schools like Sundridge Primary School are made up of children from Oscott not Kingstanding area. The local clubs are connected to Oscott, the whole community knows that the boundary is Kingstanding Road and always has been. I hope the commission will therefore listen to local residents and keep us in Oscott Ward. I welcome the changes you have made to your initial proposal and believe the new boundaries for a two member Edgbaston ward more accurately reflect the historic community of Edgbaston. However, whilst I am pleased to see that the concerns of North Edgbaston residents have to some extent been met by the renaming of Summerfield Ward as North Edgbaston, I still believe that the boundaries for this two member ward do not accurately reflect the communities within and around it. The northern portion of the proposed North Edgbaston ward does not really relate very much to Edgbaston and relate far more to Ladywood and to Soho. There are factors such as the Harborne Walkway, referred to in my previous submission, which forms a physical barrier stretching across this proposed ward which naturally divide it up. In view of other changes that have been made I, and residents to whom I have spoken would argue that the most sensible way forward is contained within the revised Conservative Group plan, which reduces North Edgbaston to a single member ward, encompassing the areas North of the Hagley Rd currently in Edgbaston and Harborne wards, as well as the area around Edgbaston Reservoir. It is notable that in these areas there are several businesses which contain the word "Edgbaston" in their names even though they fall outside the current boundaries of the ward. It shows that there is a historic association with Edgbaston within these areas which will make this revised ward a more natural fit with existing communities. I very much hope you will consider these changes. Geographically, Druids Heath is the largest housing estate in Europe. It has clearly defined boundaries and the name derives from 'Drews Heath', after a family that farmed here in the mid 19th century. Druids Heath is one of the most deprived areas in the country. We have finally got Government money for a regeneration plan, and as it has been so neglected we are hopeful this will result in significant regeneration in the near future. It would be a crying shame to lose the name from our political map at this time. Whilst there is a strong community on Druids Heath with active community centres and residents who work together to help each other, citizens are working to feed their children and heat their homes, few are engaged with formal political process. It is utterly wrong that the Boundary Commission listens to those who have the luxury of time and skills to write letters and submissions and ignores those who are already marginalised - that is why we have tried to talk one-to-one with as many residents as we could, though not nearly as many as we would have liked to. Overwhelmingly, residents wanted their estate recognised within the new ward. • Second Lieutenant Philip Eric Edkins
Second Lieutenant Philip Eric Edkins Cyril enlisted in the 1st Birmingham Pals Regiment after war was declared. He was commissioned the following year and went to France in early 1916 to join his regiment the 1/7th Royal Warwickshire Regiment, Territorial Fotce. He was wounded in the Battle for the Bazentine Ridge, the second phase of the Battle of the Somme on 14th July 1916 and died two days later at the Heilly casualty clearing station. The Edkin’s family can trace their roots back to Droitwich where his great- great-grandfather, Ellis was born around 1796.i He married Ann Turrall on the 4th December 1827 at Kidderminster.ii Three years later, in 1830, John Turrall Edkins was born, the second of three children.iii Pigot’s Directory of 1842 records Ellis as a draper in Bromsgrove Street, Droitwich. John married Sarah Bakewell, from Sutton Coldfield, on 1st August 1860.iv After his marriage John and his wife returned to Droitwich, where they lived in Queens Street with his brother, Frederick Ellis Edkins.v John was employed in the family drapery business as was his younger brother. On the 9th February 1861, an opportunist thief stole 50 yards of carpeting from the outside the shop, but thanks to the quick thinking of a young girl on an errand, the transgressor was apprehended and the goods recovered.vi Figure 1 Newspaper report of an attempted robbery at the Edkins Drapery shop in 1861, Droitwich Tragedy struck the family when John died on the 7th January 1869, aged only 38 years, vii just a month after the birth of his third child Catherine Fanny.

  • Annual Review 2018 / 2019 the Birmingham Civic Society
Annual Review 2018 / 2019 The Birmingham Civic Society Message from Geoff Cole Chairman, Birmingham Trees for Life I am pleased to report on another successful season for BTFL, in which we saw record numbers of people at one event, and rounded off the Birmingham Civic Society Centenary celebrations with a second planting at the Lickey Hills and the installation of a plaque to mark the Centenary Arboretum. We welcomed Cllr. Mohammed Azim as the new Council Member representative, who has more than demonstrated his support by attending almost every event, and were delighted to welcome back former Councillor Fiona Williams, who proved to be a staunch voice for trees when on our Committee previously, who has rejoined us as a ‘lay member’. We were fortunate to become a beneficiary of the HS2 Community Environment Fund this year, and will be planting new trees on 10 sites over 3 years with this grant. All the sites are within 1km of the line, and as inner city parks, are vital for improving air quality and health and well-being for local residents. We were also pleased to receive continuing support from the Halpin Trust for our River Cole project; last summer we trialled some summer events for the first time as part of this project, running follow-up sessions for schools on a few sites, and we will be expanding these on both River Cole and HS2 sites this summer and beyond. Our partners the Woodland Trust also continue their support of our project, and we enjoyed welcoming them back to Birmingham for our joint event at Norman Chamberlain Playing Fields.
