• Burning the Veil: the Algerian War and the 'Emancipation' of Muslim
3 Unveiling: the ‘revolutionary journées’ of 13 May 1958 Throughout the period from early 1956 to early 1958 putschist forces had been gathering strength both within the army and among right- wing settler organisations and these eventually coalesced on 13 May 1958 when crowds gathered in the Forum and stormed the General Government buildings. The military rapidly used the crisis to effect a bloodless coup and to install a temporary ‘revolutionary’ authority headed by a Committee of Public Safety (Comité de salut public or CSP) under Generals Massu and Salan. There then followed a tense stand- off between the army in Algeria and the new Paris government headed by Pierre Pfl imlin, a three-week period during which civil war was a real possibility, until de Gaulle agreed to assume, once again, the role of ‘saviour of the nation’, and was voted into power by the National Assembly on 1 June.1 ‘13 May’ was one of the great turning points in modern French history, not only because it marked a key stage in the Algerian War, but more signifi cantly the collapse of the Fourth Republic, de Gaulle’s return to power, and the beginnings of the new constitutional regime of the Fifth Republic. The planning of the coup and its implementation was extraordi- narily complex – the Bromberger brothers in Les 13 Complots du 13 mai counted thirteen strands2 – but basically two antagonistic politi- cal formations reached agreement to rally to the call for de Gaulle’s return to power. On the one hand there was a secret plot by Gaullists, most notably Michel Debré (soon to become Prime Minister), Jacques Soustelle, Léon Delbecque and Jacques Chaban-Delmas (acting Minister of Defence), to engineer the return of the General so as to resolve the political crisis of the ‘system’, the dead hand of the party system of the Fourth Republic, which they viewed as destroying the grandeur of France.

The United States military was shocked by its failure and was forced to consider what it had done wrong. Once the U.S. military looked into its past it was forced to admit it had wrongly ignored counterinsurgency. To correct this, it assigned many of its officers, along with other military experts, to create a new, updated doctrine that incorporated the lessons of Iraq and other recent, relevant historical precedent.

The Algerian War's Origins in French Colonization of Algeria 1830 Algiers is occupied by France. 1839 Abd el-Kader declares war on the French after their meddling in the administration of his territory. 1847 Abd el-Kader surrenders. France finally subjugates Algeria. 1848 Algeria is recognized as an integral part of France. The colony is opened to European settlers. 1871 Colonization of Algeria increases in response to the loss of the Alsace- Lorraine region to the German Empire. 1936 Blum-Viollette reform is blocked by French Settlers. March 1937 The Parti du Peuple Algerien (PPA, Algerian People's Party) is formed by the veteran Algerian nationalist Messali Hadj. 1938 Ferhat Abbas forms the Union Populaire Algérienne (UPA, Algerian Popular Union). May, 1940 World War II—Fall of France. November1942 Allied landings in Algeria and Morocco. May 1945 World War II —Victory in Europe. May 8, 1945. While France celebrates VE Day, Muslim protesters in Sétif organize to demand Algerian independence. What begins as a march becomes a massacre: the protesters murder more than 100 European settlers, or pieds- noirs, and French armed forces retaliate by killing (according to various estimates) between 1,000 and 45,000 Muslims. October 1946 The Mouvement pour le Triomphe des Libertés Démocratiques (MTLD, Movement for the Triumph of Democratic Liberties) replaces the PPA, with Messali Hadj as president. 1947 The Organization Spéciale (OS, Special Organization) is formed as a paramilitary arm of the MTLD. September 20, A new constitution for Algeria is established. All Algerian citizens are offered 1947 French citizenship (of equal status to those of France).

ISBN 9781786736192. Review by Roy Dilley, University of St Andrews. In 1852, Louis Léon César Faidherbe, later promoted to General in the French Army during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871, was transferred from Algeria to Senegal in the role of Deputy Director of Engineers. Two years later, now chef de bataillon, Faidherbe was appointed Governor of Senegal, a position he held until July 1865, with one brief hiatus from 1861 to 1863. He immediately rose to the task, instituting a new colonial regime that aimed at the mise en valeur of the region. With the backing of powerful merchants from Bordeaux, Faidherbe sought to pacify the hinterland along the banks of the Senegal River east from Saint Louis on the coast, where rich pickings in trade were to be had. One of Faidherbe’s first missions was to subjugate and repulse Moorish traders from Saint Louis and its surrounds, sending them back north of the river valley into the desert margins. He then set about quelling Al Hajj Umar Tal and his Futanke followers from Fuuta Toro of the middle valley. Alarmed at the growing power of the militant Islamic leader, Faidherbe went on the offensive, abandoning the cautious approach of his predecessors, and he drove Tal and his armies east.
