PRESIDENTS’ FILES

HOROWITZ

Note: President Horowitz’s papers were transferred to the Archives in several segments, in January, July, and September 2005, and work on them was begun in November of that year. They comprised 14 cardboard boxes of about one cubic foot each and four standard five-drawer metal filing cabinets totaling approximately 50 cubic feet. That work was completed in March 2008; but additions were received from the Office of Public Affairs and the President’s Office from time to time during the rest of 2008 and the spring and summer of 2009 and from the Provost’s Office in 2010. Still more was received from Horowitz in June 2011 and from the President’s office in 2012 and 2013. All these additions have been integrated into the existing files.

To the extent possible the papers have been processed in the same way as those of her predecessors, specifically in the selection of folder titles.

Horowitz often used the back of pages of typescript for new notes, drafts of new papers, informal correspondence and the like. Whenever the archivist came across such pages the side containing the unwanted text was crossed out in pencil; but users should be aware of this to avoid confusion as papers are removed from the files and examined.

A list of abbreviations she used frequently is provided here, but it is far from complete: ABA – Applied Behavior Analysis AFP – Association of Fund-Raising Professionals APA – American Psychological Association APF – American Psychological Foundation APS – American Psychological Society CGS – Council of Graduate Schools COGDOP – Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology HDFL – Human Development and Family Life (a division within the University of Kansas) ICIS – International Conference on Infancy Studies Jnl – Journal (used in parentheses after a journal title) KID Project – Kansas Infant Development Project KU – University of Kansas NASULGC – National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges NBAS – Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale NICHHD – National Institute of Child Health and Human Development NIH – National Institutes of Health PITS – People in the Street SRCD – Society for Research in Child Development

Articles, Speeches and Other Writings

The full texts of Horowitz’s articles, speeches and other writings are filed chronologically in eight loose-leaf binders. (The typescript of a 1975 monograph edited by Horowitz, to which she contributed several chapters, is filed in a separate container shelved between the 1970s and 1980s binders.) Drafts, revisions and accompanying correspondence are filed with one copy of the final full text under appropriate subject headings in the appropriate subgroup. However, for a few articles or speeches there may be neither a copy nor even any reference under the subject. Also, there is no certainty that this compilation includes absolutely all the articles, speeches and other writings of Horowitz’s prolific career.

The same item may appear here, with variations, as a conference paper, a journal article, and a chapter in a book, under different dates. An effort has been made to bring the several versions together if possible.

A few reprints or extra copies may be filed with the originals in these binders.

Correspondence—Names

Note: Papers are filed here only if there is no identifiable subject or if the named person is the subject. Otherwise, papers by or about specific persons are filed in Correspondence—Subjects under relevant headings denoting their fields of activity or the organizations to which they belonged. There are no cross-references from here or other indicators to that effect.

For several persons there are brief notes about material of special interest contained in their files, i.e., papers other than routine reports, greetings, condolences, notices of appointments, and the like.

Many papers are missing: letters to which Horowitz replied, her replies to letters received, replies to her letters, enclosures mentioned in correspondence, etc. Some of these may have been passed on to other people to handle; others may have been discarded deliberately in the course of weeding the files. A special problem is presented by e-mail because the sender’s and recipients’ names may not always be given in full or because it may go to numerous addressees at once.

Another problem is due to Horowitz’s habit of addressing people by their first names without indicating, somewhere on the document, what their last names are. Most of these documents are properly filed in Correspondence—Subjects; in many others the people could be identified by the Archivist. In the few remaining cases the documents are filed in the Personal Materials subgroup, under “Unidentified or Fragmentary Papers.”

GSUC Archives V-C Presidents’ Files / Horowitz

Correspondence—Subjects

Note: The papers here span the period from the early 1960s to Horowitz’s retirement as GSUC president in May 2005 and post-retirement roles at GSUC. They cover not only her role as GSUC president and her earlier tenure at the University of Kansas but also her extensive activities in education and psychology generally and in developmental psychology, her specialty, in particular. They also cover her deep involvement in Judaism and in the movements for women’s rights and racial equality.

As far as possible, folder titles are consistent with those used in other record groups. Usually, titles are in the normal word order, i.e., not inverted (e.g., American Psychological Association, not Psychological Association, American). There are no cross-references from personal names, but cross-references from synonyms and related terms are used extensively. Folders and the papers they contain are usually filed in reverse chronological order, i.e., with the latest in front.

Note that the dates do not always match those on the cassette labels “Women to Women” (CUNY TV Program)—Specific Programs (16 folders) Papers about individual shows, listed alphabetically by names of the guests. They comprise introductory and concluding remarks, proposed questions and topics, biographical and other background papers, and, in a few cases, photos and correspondence with and about the interviewees. When two or more guests appeared in the same program, the papers are filed under the name coming first alphabetically. Entries include the show’s title if given and the date (usually the date of taping, not when the show was aired). Entries also indicate if the tapes themselves are in the Archives, and how many. These are stored in six large cardboard cartons, roughly in the alphabetical order of the interviewees’ names. Two or more tapes of the same show are bundled together with rubber bands. Data on the cassette labels may not match those in the schedules. These cartons are on the lower shelves below the last archival boxes in the Horowitz record group.

Archives V-C Presidents’ Files / Horowitz

Personal Materials

Note: This subgroup comprises documentary as well as non-documentary materials (“objects”) pertaining to the personal, more private side of Horowitz’s life, although the dividing line between “professional” and “private” is often blurred. (For example, if a vacation is combined with business travel, papers about this are filed not here but in the Correspondence—Subjects subgroup wherever the business aspect is covered.) Here, as throughout the Archives, documents are filed in folders with appropriate titles, and the folders are stored alphabetically in archival boxes. The boxes are labeled with the titles of the first and last folders they contain and are shelved in alphabetical order. Non- documentary materials and oversize documents are stored in suitable containers, which are labeled to indicate their contents and shelved with or near the archival boxes.
