The 2018 PLCAC Annual Convention

It is with great pleasure that my wife Sheryl and I welcome you to the 2018 PLCAC Annual Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. This year marks our 64th event. Nashville, from its very beginnings, grew from a foundation built on music. The city’s earliest settlers celebrated in the late 1700s with fiddle tunes and buck dancing after safely disembarking onto the shores of the Cumberland River. As the 1800s unfolded, Nashville grew to become a national center for music publishing. The first around-the-world tour by a musical act from Nashville was by the Fisk Jubilee Singers from Fisk University. Their efforts helped fund the school’s mission of education after the Civil War — and also put Nashville on the map as a global music center. In fact, upon playing for the Queen of England, the queen stated the Fisk Jubilee Singers must come from the “Music City.” Today, the capital of Tennessee is known as the epicenter of country music. As you explore this city, steeped in southern history, we are certain that you will enjoy your visit. We have prepared a fantastic week, packed again with many exciting events and tours — all of them designed to convey a true sense of what makes Nashville the city “that calls music home”. In closing, on behalf of the PLCAC Board of Directors, I would like to express our sincere appreciation to our 2018 sponsors for their support in making this year’s convention one to be remembered for years to come. See you in Music City, U.S.A. in April!

Lyall A. Nash PLCAC President 2017-2018

4.4. The DESTINATION

Nashville, located on the Cumberland River in the north central part of Tennessee, is the largest city in the state, and also its capital. The city is a center for the music, healthcare, publishing, banking and transportation industries, and is home to numerous colleges and universities.

The name “Nashville” is symbolic to the country music industry, earning it the moniker Music City, U.S.A. Many popular tourist attractions involve country music, including the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Belcourt Theatre and Ryman Auditorium. The Ryman was home to the Grand Ole Opry until 1974 when the show moved to the Grand Ole Opry House.

Civil War history is important to the city’s tourism industry. Sites pertaining to the Battle of Nashville and the nearby Battle of Franklin and Battle of Stones River can be visited, along with several well-preserved antebellum plantations such as Belle Meade and Carnton.

Nashville has several arts centers and museums, including the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Tennessee State Museum, Johnny Cash Museum, Vanderbilt University’s Fine Art Gallery and a full-scale replica of the Parthenon.

5. The VENUE

Across from the Music City Center, the downtown Omni Nashville Hotel is a one-of-a-kind experience, fully integrated with an expansion of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum on three levels.

The hotel’s design is a modern expression of the city’s distinct character, incorporating natural materials, exposed steel and regional limestone. The multi-story hotel and museum share meeting and entertainment space and bring additional restaurants and retail venues to this dynamic destination in downtown Nashville.

Amenities include: a full-service spa; rooftop swimming pool and whirlpool offering stunning views of the downtown skyline; a fitness centre; and a seasonal rooftop bar and grill. Wifi is free for PLCAC delegates. Omni Nashville Hotel And keep an eye out for celebrities and professional athletes who frequent 250 – 5th Avenue South the hotel. Nashville, TN 37203 For more information, visit: www.omnihotels.com/hotels/nashville

NOTE: There will be limited space at the Omni Nashville Hotel during the PLCAC convention. Special convention rates are being offered to PLCAC delegates from April 21 to April 27, based on availability. (See page 13 for further information).

6. Getting to the HOTEL

The Omni Nashville Hotel is approximately 9 miles (11 minutes) from the Nashville International Airport. With more than 12.2 million passengers visiting each year, the airport serves almost 400 flights daily.

Because of its close proximity to downtown, most visitors opt to take a taxi or limousine service from the airport to the city centre. The Omni Nashville Hotel does not offer a shuttle service. Taxis to the downtown area run around $25.00 – $30.00 USD.

If you prefer to be more independent during your stay, there are several car rental companies within the airport terminal. Self-parking is available at the Music City Center garage adjacent to the Omni Nashville Hotel for $24.00 USD + tax per day with in/out privileges. Valet parking is also available for $32.00 USD per night with in/out privileges.

NOTE: Prices here are in USD and are subject to change as per the service provider.
