African Initiated Christianity and the Decolonisation of Development
African Initiated Christianity and the Decolonisation of Development This book investigates the substantial and growing contribution which African Independent and Pentecostal Churches are making to sustainable development in all its manifold forms. Moreover, this volume seeks to elucidate how these churches reshape the very notion of sustainable development and contribute to the decolonisation of development. Fostering both overarching and comparative perspectives, the book includes chapters on West Africa (Nigeria, Ghana, and Burkina Faso) and Southern Africa (Zimbabwe and South Africa). It aims to open up a subfield focused on African Initiated Christianity within the religion and development discourse, substantially broadening the scope of the existing literature. Written predominantly by scholars from the African continent, the chapters in this volume illuminate potentials and perspectives of African Initiated Christianity, combining theoretical contributions, essays by renowned church leaders, and case studies focusing on particular churches or regional contexts. While the contributions in this book focus on the African continent, the notion of development underlying the concept of the volume is deliberately wide and multidimensional, covering economic, social, ecological, political, and cultural dimensions. Therefore, the book will be useful for the community of scholars interested in religion and development as well as researchers within African studies, anthropology, development studies, political science, religious studies, sociology of religion, and theology. It will also be a key resource for development policymakers and practitioners. Ogbu Kalu and African Pentecostalism
Richard Burgess (2019forthcoming) Ogbu Kalu and African Pentecostalism. In Andrew Atherstone and David Ceri Jones (eds.), Evangelicalism and its Historians, Routledge Studies in Evangelicalism Professor Ogbu Kalu, who died unexpectedly in 2009, was one of the leading African scholars working within the field of African church history. A native of Nigeria, Kalu worked for almost thirty years as a church historian at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, before his appointment in 2001 as Henry Winters Luce Professor of World Christianity and Mission at McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago, Illinois. During his career he published over 150 articles and book chapters, as well as 18 books and edited volumes, on a wide range of subjects.1 Kalu’s earliest research was on Protestant religious practices in Jacobean England, although he soon turned his attention to the history of Christianity in Nigeria and Africa more widely. However, it was his latter research and publications on African Pentecostalism that cemented his reputation as a world class scholar. Kalu was born in 1942 in Ohafia (now in Abia State) and studied at the Hope Waddell Training Institute, Calabar, a legacy of nineteenth and twentieth-century Presbyterian missionaries to Nigeria. In 1963, soon after Nigeria achieved its independence from Britain and joined the Commonwealth, Kalu left Nigeria to study history in Canada at McMaster University and the University of Toronto, where he earned a PhD in history in 1970. He subsequently obtained a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1974 and a Doctor of Divinity honoris causa in 1997 from the Presbyterian College, Montreal, Canada. -

Kalu (1942–2009) Richard Burgess University of Birmingham, UK [email protected] I am sure that we were all shocked and saddened to hear the news of the sudden death of Dr Ogbu Kalu on 7 January 2009 after a brief illness. Dr Kalu, who spent most of his life and academic career in Nigeria, was most recently the Henry Winters Luce Professor of World Christianity at McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago. We first met in 1999 when I was just beginning my doctoral studies on African Pentecostalism at the University of Birmingham. It was his invi- tation to participate in a conference in Nigeria which helped to kick-start my field research and introduce me to some of the pioneers of the Nige- rian Pentecostal movement. I remember the group discussions we had with some of these pastors, and the respect with which they held him. Subsequently, I benefited from Dr Kalu’s comments on my own work and from interacting with his numerous publications. Dr Kalu has been described as a “towering figure in the fields of Global Mission, African Christianity and Global Pentecosalism.” He studied History at the Universities of Toronto, Canada, and London, United Kingdom, obtaining BA (Hons), MA, PhD (University of Toronto). He also obtained a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Semi- nary, New Jersey, and a Doctor of Divinity in 1997 from the Presbyterian College, Montreal, Canada. -

Uka Preamble The Deputy Vice Chancellor, and Chairman of the occasion, All other protocols observed. I feel humbled, and at the same time honoured to be invited to participate in this sudden memorial seminar on behalf of Prof. Ogbu Kalu my boyhood friend at Hope Waddell in the mid fifties. We belonged to the same church- the Presbyterian church of Nigeria. Ogbu kept in touch with me when he was about to return to Nigeria in 1974. By then I was the Chaplain of the Christ Church Chapel here in UNN. Ogbu encouraged me to apply to Princeton Theological Seminary while he was there. He also disclosed to me his intention to apply to the University of Nigeria Nsukka (U.N.N.) for the post of a lecturer in the Department of History. I took his letter to Prof. Eme Awa of blessed memory for advice. He suggested that Ogbu should apply to the Department of Religion where his progress would be rapid, for at that time, there were heavy weights in History with people like Prof. Ifemesia, Prof. Afigbo and the rest. He asked me to inform Ogbu to send his application through him. This was how Ogbu got appointment in the Department of Religion here in U.N.N. Ogbu made me feel proud by his progress in our Department. In fact he was a champion not only in subjects related to religion and culture, but also in history and in most of the social science subjects. -

He is well known for his advocacy on African tradition and culture. Amu's pride in the African personality has earned him a place in Ghana's hall of fame. It was in recognition of these achievements that his portrait was embossed on Ghana's highest currency, the Twenty Thousand Cedi note. But there is more to the Amu story. In this thesis I have drawn substantially on Amu's own works to demonstrate how, in fact, he is an exemplar of mother tongue apprehension of the Christian faith in Africa. Amu showed in his songs, diaries, sermons, letters, addresses and private papers that the mother tongue, in this case, Ewe and Twi can be used to express not only Christian experience but also to formulate theological ideas in an innovative and creative ways. -

Obituary Professor Ogbu Uke Kalu (June 2, 1942–January 7, 2009)
Journal of Religion in Africa 39 (2009) 360-361 brill.nl/jra Obituary Professor Ogbu Uke Kalu (June 2, 1942–January 7, 2009) Professor Ogbu U. Kalu, a member of the Board of the Journal of Religion in Africa for a number of years, passed away unexpectedly in early 2009. Professor Kalu’s life spanned many important eras in his native Nigeria’s his- tory. Born in Ohafi a (now in Abia State) in the midst of World War II when Nigeria was still a colony of Great Britain, Solomon Ogbu U. Kalu received his early education in that town and later (1955-61) at the famous Hope Wad- dell Training Institute in Calabar. It is perhaps signifi cant that HWTI was a legacy of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Presbyterian missionaries to Nigeria since their work would spur Kalu’s interest and subsequent scholar- ship in African Christianity. At around the same time that Nigeria received its fi nal independence from the U.K. and joined the Commonwealth, Kalu left Nigeria for university in Canada, studying history at McMaster University and the University of Toronto, where he earned his Ph.D. in that subject in 1970. Since the Biafran civil war was raging in and around his hometown, the young Ph.D. studied in the United Kingdom, then came to the United States to take a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton University in 1974. Th e end of the war enabled Kalu to return to Nigeria, where he took a lectureship in the Department of Religious Studies at the revived University of Nigeria at Nsukka, becoming a professor of church history in 1978.
