NORTHERN PERU: THE MOCHE ROUTE CHICLAYO & TRUJILLO Apo19-ASPA-2-11 (03 days/ 02 nights)

DAY 01 LIMA - CHICLAYO (L)

Arrive in an early morning flight from Peru’s capital to the northern city of Chiclayo, and after some rest time we start our visit to the mud-brick pyramid that made world headlines in 1987 with one of the most sensational discoveries of recent archaeology, known as ” -- the “Cracked Pyramid” and its Site Museum.

We return to Chiclayo for a delicious lunch of Peru’s northern-style cuisine.

After these sensational experiences we continue on to Lambayeque, to visit the Royal Tombs of the Sipan Museum. This modern building, representing the style of a Moche pyramid, was built to house the stunning and priceless objects unearthed at Sipan. We will be able to appreciate the incredible array of precious symbols and images, stones and shell necklaces, ear-plugs and headdresses that were worn and displayed at Moche ceremonies, and also learn what is known of their meaning. This astonishing visit ends at an “animated waxworks” exhibit of the lords and retinue of the Moche court, allowing us to glimpse and imagine the world of an unfamiliar but dazzling civilization that thrived here at a time when Europe was sliding into the Dark Ages after the fall of the Roman Empire.

We return to Chiclayo for an overnight stay.

DAY 02 CHICLAYO - TRUJILLO (B/L)

In the morning, departure to an oasis of calm at “Túcume”. Here we will be able to watch the chronological sequence that followed the fall of the Moche, at a site where their descendants, the “Sicán” culture, continued to amass millions of adobe bricks for the building of mighty pyramids -- including the longest of its kind in the world, at more than 700m/2,300ft -- but were now influenced by highland tribes, and began to abandon their old ways. We can also visit the small, intimate and low-tech site museum, to enjoy the excellent collection of excavated objects, dioramas of daily life, and models of the pyramids.

On our way, we continue to the archaeological site of : This site was featured in National Geographic magazine after the sensational discovery of the mummy of a tattooed priestess buried with a variety of ceremonial and military accoutrements. An extraordinary array of multicolored murals dating from seven or more phases of

ASOCIACIÓN PERUANA DE OPERADORES DE TURISMO RECEPTIVO E INTERNO PERUVIAN ASSOCIATION OF INCOMING TOUR OPERATORS

construction depicts both scenes from the daily lives of the Moche, and gory rituals of sacrifice.

We continue to Trujillo and arrive to , where we will have a chance to try the superb seafood of Trujillo at one of the restaurants, overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

We will then visit the great “Chimú” center of , the largest adobe city ever built. It was, in fact, an elite settlement, a series of nine enormous palaces belonging to successive rulers of the “Chimú” realm. At the Tschudi palace enclosure we enter a labyrinthine series of courtyards lined with clay friezes of fish and ocean birds, and walled in places with an open meshwork adobe building style believed to represent fishing nets. We visit inner patios, residences, administrative buildings, temples, platforms and storehouses, and a huge reservoir where “sunken gardens” may have produced specialized crops for the “Chimú” nobility. Overnight in Trujillo at selected hotel.

DAY 03 TRUJILLO - LIMA (B/L)

We begin our day visiting the “”, and the “”, two huge flat-topped pyramids built by the between 0 and 600A.D. The “Huaca de la Luna” is an extraordinary demonstration of what patient long-term archaeology can achieve. Here, at a site that has been well known and frequently looted for centuries, excavations have revealed layer upon layer of ancient construction, uncovering wall after wall of colorful friezes that were intentionally buried by the Moche, and had not seen the light of day for one-and- a-half thousand years. Bloodthirsty fanged deities and exotic gods in the form of spiders, snakes felines, octopi and other marine creatures rub shoulders with lines of dancers, warriors and naked prisoners, as well as scenes of ritual combat. Visit to the Site Museum of de Moche's “Huacas”, a modern museum that serves as center of interpretation of the “Huaca de la Luna” (Pyramid of the Moon) and of one of the principal cities of the Moche Culture. Meeting artisans of the Moche Valley.

We will enjoy a delicious lunch at a Restaurant located near the “Huacas” or Pyramids of the Sun and of the Moon in which we will be offered typical Peruvian northern food. In addition we will appreciate a spectacular view of the performance of the Peruvian Paso Horses.

Return to Trujillo for a short City Tour through the historic center of Trujillo, a city whose heart still pulses with colonial splendor. We visit the immense main square and the spacious mansions built by Spanish and Creole gentry during the 17th and 18th centuries. At proper time, transfer to the airport for your flight to Lima.

ASOCIACIÓN PERUANA DE OPERADORES DE TURISMO RECEPTIVO E INTERNO PERUVIAN ASSOCIATION OF INCOMING TOUR OPERATORS

Subsequently you visit the Yacapana Islands which are called by the locals the “Iguana Islands,” because of the huge population of these reptiles—like tiny dinosaurs—crawling over the ground and resting in the tree tops. We will pass by in the skiff, giving you a chance to snap good photos. As the sun sets, you will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see and photograph both gray and pink freshwater dolphins. We will return to the M/V Aqua vessel and continue our journey upstream, toward the headwaters of the Amazon River, where the Ucayali, Marañon, and the Amazon Rivers merge.

Perhaps sip a pre-dinner Pisco-/Camu-Camu sour on the Upper Deck, while you watch the sun set.

Overnight.

And we will show you famous Kapok Trees (ceiba pentandra), the tallest trees in the Amazon Basin.

DAY 04 IQUITOS – LIMA BIRTHPLACE OF THE AMAZON - YUCURUCHE LAKE/VILLAGE VISIT - Nauta – IQUITOS – LIMA (B, L)

This morning, the M/V Aqua skirts the edges of the vast Pacaya-Samiria Reserve, a flooded forest covering five million acres at the headwaters of the Amazon basin. Rise early and be on your skiffs at 8:00 a.m. to view one of the great spectacles of the Southern Hemisphere: the sun rising over the birthplace of the Amazon River. Your dawn excursion will be accompanied by abundant bird song, as you glide in small boats past river banks populated by large-billed terns, laughing falcons, gray tanagers, sandpipers, five kinds of parakeets, the exotic short-tailed parrot, and dozens of other birds.

We will then travel by skiff to a native village, where you will meet and interact with the hospitable native Indians. They will share their culture, traditions, and folklore with you, and you will have the opportunity to purchase some of their handicrafts and delightful folk art.

Back on the vessel you can share a last lunch with your fellow passengers and talk about the experiences you have made during this picturesque journey. Finally, as our last excursion, we will visit the Manatee Rescue Center, where biologists and volunteers care for endangered Amazon manatees that conservation authorities have seized from local people and fishermen. You will also see how the manatees are cared for and are prepared for re-introduction into their natural habitat.

To facilitate the whole process at the Airport, your guides will help you with check-in, and will stay with you until you have boarded your flight back to Lima.
